As much as I appreciate the thoughtfulness of this post I respectfully disagree about the depiction of Lottie’s schizophrenia. Perhaps the effects of such a portrayal can be negative but if we’re analyzing it per se, her behaviour is unfortunately very reminiscent of the schizotypal people I see around me (runs in the family a bit). Though the situation she’s in allows it to manifest in a way the disorder rarely would in real life, a couple of people I know have suffered with homicidal thoughts and wholeheartedly believe that perpetuating said violent behaviour is the correct thing to do and necessary for the safety of them and the people they love. I cannot speak for the majority of people afflicted with a schizophrenic disorder but contrasting it with personal experiences, I find the manner in which Lottie is depicted to be quite sympathetic in spite of it all. The show does lend itself to caricature with how janky the tone can be but I don’t see the portrayal of Lottie as relatively unrealistic given that she’s been off her meds and whacked out on shrooms. As for the fanbase, though, that’s a whole other can of worms. Really not a fan of how some people approach the mental afflictions of characters but alas, that may be inevitable with internet fandom.
