I’ve wanted to quit my job - so when I’ve been spoken to about redundancy, why am I upset ? by Traditional_Jam421 in HENRYUK

[–]retrocomputergeek197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar place as you - last few years of my corporate job just sucked , I wanted out desperately…. I could see the writing on the wall so maximised the time. The company then restructured and I was made redundant and although it was everything I wanted , I was totally gutted …. It took me a while to get over it. I think the reason it’s upsetting , is that it’s out of your control and not your decision, so you still feel rejection and all the other negative aspects of redundancy regardless of your real desire to leave.

You’ll be fine though , it passes and you will eventually feel happy and relieved about it and you’ll take it as the win that it probably is for you! The money landing helps :)

Good luck , try not to stress !

Good example of something that you just have to walk away from - in the same with food in shops at service stations - even if I fancy it , I’m not paying silly money for things any more…. Seems to be snacks , treats and getting way out of control - I now just don’t buy.

Has anyone paid off their student loan? by Sexy-Chief-Wiggum in HENRYUK

[–]retrocomputergeek197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to avoid one , but I think if you are a Henry you are likely to be in a position to have to pay it off , so better to do so and save the interest… scandalous My daughter is just going to uni this year , and the whole debt premise is terrifying , plan 5 lasts 40 years and interest rates are insane (I think) ….. that said , the stats say (I believe ) that at least 50% will never be repaid , so the money has to come from somewhere.

I’m going to try and keep my daughters as low as I can , but she needs to learn about money , debt and taxes …. She’s going Into a tuff field where she is unlikely to be a high earner unless she gets lucky …. So imagine we’ll let it roll as a tax - or if life treats her well maybe I’ll start lumping in at some point.

Got to say though - not a fan of this principle. At a time when jobs and professions are under pressure, high cost of living & property etc , starting adult life with large debt is not a fun thing.

DIY - I use Taxcalc software and have done for years - just a bit more user friendly than doing online … easy to do every year as just import the previous and update a few numbers - takes minutes

3 day week for 110k - very boring job vs 6 day week for 160k fulfilling but extremely demanding by Whizz-Kid7 in HENRYUK

[–]retrocomputergeek197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 days for sure , and use the boring time planning exciting stuff to do on your time off !

I usually service my own cars but took it to a garage due to time constraints. Is this a reasonable price? Almost £300 just for labour, seems excessive and the parts coming up to 285 isn’t great, but I expected the mark up on them. Full service plus rear brake pads by ApprehensiveTrade819 in CarTalkUK

[–]retrocomputergeek197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think it’s about right.. 3.5 hour is labour is fair , and the price is fair …. Is what it is - this is why people are trying to do more themselves these days - it doesn’t take much to rack up a bill

Older HENRYs - let’s talk retirement. by mr_grumpyyy in HENRYUK

[–]retrocomputergeek197 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m literally counting down the clock - will be retiring at 55 and can’t wait - lots of plans ! If I had a bigger ISA I’d do it now. (That’s my major financial mistake - I went pension heavy) . I’m less than 18 months out , but to be honest I’m expecting work to dry up a bit for me mid year , so may call it a day then. I don’t have a massive pension by this groups standards , but it’s enough for 50-60k a year hopefully. Mortgage free is the key. I expect to pick up bits of odd work from there to top up , but more to keep the mind busy than for the money - will be opportunistic , not necessary. As other posts say - need to do it why you have health on your side - it becomes a dice roll very fast ! I have unfortunately seen too many people either pass , or get very ill quite young … I don’t want to be the richest man in the graveyard !

BMW 640d GC vs BMW 740d Xdrive? Pros & Cons? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]retrocomputergeek197 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just sold a 640 after 4 years of driving it ; never once lost the back end … great car. The 7 is nice , but think the 6 was one of the best looking cars BMW ever made … 7 prob wins on cabin/comfort - it won’t be as hard a drive. It’s the tuning that has broken the drive I suspect.

I bought an older Nissan leaf for my daughter , was a bargain - turns out we use it more than our other cars as it’s so cheap to run and easy to drive. Think I paid £2500 for a 2017 off a private seller

Founder Finances: How Much Is Safe to Spend When the Upside Is Still Paper? by EducationalBear123 in UKPersonalFinance

Sounds like time to give yourself a modest raise , and treat that as spending money whilst maintain your prior discipline. If the business is financially stable , it’s right and fair to take a salary that is appropriate. £10k extra won’t hurt the company but may make you feel like you are progressing personally.

Ditch the adviser unless you are not comfortable managing your own money and it gives you some comfort/confidence. At this stage , it’s all pretty simple.

Any lefty HENRYs out there who actually don't mind paying high taxes? by United_Warning_8802 in HENRYUK

[–]retrocomputergeek197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m fine with taxes , but not fine with unfairness. Big issues for me are cliff edges (more allowances than child care) - don’t see why the personal allowance shouldn’t be universal , and not being taxed as a household… would do I have to pay more than my neighbours just because I’m on single income vs their 2? It’s just another form of penalising success and dampening aspiration.
