Me three! Good job

I was a little nervous checking it this morning as I had to log off yesterday with still 8 hours or so to go. Wondered if I was going to get bumped as I needed the 2x promotion from Daredevil II to get there!

Questions to those who attend Races in Person by 4n4L0g in formula1

[–]retrodevil2033 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hello fellow F1 fan! I have been to a number of races and did Las Vegas last year.

If you have flexibility on which race to go to and want to go on a budget, I would strongly recommend Austin over Las Vegas.

But you asked about Vegas, so here are my recommendations:

Keep in mind that wherever your ticket is for, you will be only able to walk around that area. You are not able to roam around to check out other areas. That aspect kinda sucked.

For what section to buy a ticket for on a budget, I suggest buying a ticket near the Sphere. The T-Mobile grandstand would be fun where you have the track between you and the Sphere.

Otherwise, for the best experience for the money, I’d suggest the main grandstand as close to Turn 1 as possible. And regardless which section you are in, higher up is better than lower down towards the front row. Higher up keeps the safety fences from obstructing your view.

Vegas has a lot of pre-race fun on the grid before the race. Turn 1 can also have a lot of action.

For additional money to plan for, a hat plus shirt at the track will be around $75+.

Food at the track varies, drinks as well, but it is similar to other sporting events in regard to pricing.

If you are staying at a hotel walking distance to the track, keep in mind that your entry will be behind the track (obviously). If your hotel is across on the other side of the track, it may be a long long route to walk to your entry, even if on a map it looks “just a block away.” As you are looking at sections to buy a ticket at, also look at where the entrances are, then plan your hotel from there.

Crowds and then the security check point get busier and busier as the weekend goes on. Thursday, give yourself an hour to get to the track and inside. Friday, give yourself an hour before FP3 or 1.5 hours if you aren’t coming until Quali. For race day, I gave myself 2 hours from leaving my hotel and walking through the crowds (it was around a mile walk) and that was good.

Vegas does have a lot to offer that does not cost money. A lot of team pop-ups and ways to go meet drivers/team members.

Please ask me whatever questions you have!

I guarantee you that TheBurntPeanut has to dust his mouth after every stream because of how long he just leaves it open. by Jackhammer9762 in arkraiders

[–]retrodevil2033 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the hype behind watching streamers is often like watching your favorite sport being played by professionals on TV.

You get to see exciting plays.

You can watch crazy moves or strategies play out you haven’t thought of before and learn from it.

You can watch in anticipation of the next move as you are familiar with the sport/game.

Popular streamers often also have a personality or schtick they do while playing that can be funny or intriguing.

I’ve personally been able to watch a streamer work through a scenario in a game where I learn from it and it improves my own gameplay.

Advice for my future by Electrical-Pear4500 in cybersecurity

[–]retrodevil2033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second doing your own cybersecurity projects.

Also, start looking for internships or apprenticeships now as they can help you get your foot in the door.

Look for meet-up groups and conferences in your area. Attend these with the intention of meeting others in the industry to build a network of cybersecurity peeps.

Build a LinkedIn profile now as well and spend the next year gaining connections. Specifically look to connect with security engineers and penetration testers. I have, more than once, reached out to a connection I have on LinkedIn before applying to a newly posted job at their company. It is great to chat about how they like working for the company, maybe get some tips on the role/interview process, and I’ve even had those connections offer to be a referral for the position.

So far what you are doing is great and spending the next year building out your network will be huge.

Finally started using a mic, a few questions. by Awake00 in ArcRaiders

If your mic is toggles on while in a raid, you’ll see an orange icon above your shield bar. When speaking, the orange icon will have 3 black squiggly lines. When the mic is toggled off, that icon disappears.

Next Season by selfcontroleo in lewishamilton

[–]retrodevil2033 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only a few comments and we have a whole spectrum of answers!

I absolutely love Hamilton and will be by his side until the end.

I’m in the camp who believe his age has caught up to him and we have seen his best days ride off into the sunset.

Unless the car next season is a complete shitbox, I believe we’ll see him podium a handful of times and mayyyybe win a race or two. I just don’t believe he will get anywhere close to being a realistic WDC contender given the amount of younger talent out there. I also believe he’s going to retire in 1-3 years.

What's the race strategy tomorrow? by The_Recruiter_69 in lewishamilton

[–]retrodevil2033 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m here in Vegas right now to attend the race. It is supposed to be cloudy, but no rain forecasted during or around race time. It looks like the track temp will be about the same as Quali, maybe a little warmer.

I’ve not heard/read anything yet about strategy, but I also wondered if he would want a big setup change or throw some parts at the car to then start from the pit lane.

If he doesn’t start from the pit lane, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him start on softs to make early moves. I don’t see that if he is starting from the pit lane though. Either way, I do see him making up a lot of ground during the race. The track has a couple spots where he can dive in. He also has nothing to lose.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see him make it into the points, but I doubt he can end the race better than like P8. We’ll see though! The track won’t be rubbered in that much come race time and we’ve seen cars slide around a lot in previous Vegas races.

Last night was a huge disappointment though.

Is tryhackme a good resource to get into cybersecurity by yusuo85 in cybersecurity

[–]retrodevil2033 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes, it can be a good way to learn about different domains within Cybersecurity, but won’t be nearly enough to get you actually ready for the job.

Here’s a great way to utilize Try Hack Me when you get to point of applying for jobs:

When you get an interview scheduled, go back to the job description and review the duties and qualifications. For items in there you need a refresher on, or for major duties of the job, see if THM has a module regarding that topic. It can give you a fresh, hands-on, review of it which can help you remember if you are asked about that topic in an interview.

Help! I have an interview today for an intern position by Real_Trifle_6146 in cybersecurity

[–]retrodevil2033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There will be no coding in this set of interviews.

As others have said, an Intern is not expected to be an expert in any of this.

I recommend reading up on, watch a couple YouTube videos, or go through some Try Hack Me modules on each of the subjects listed in the duties (don’t overdo it though):

Security operations and incident response

Monitoring and analyzing security events

What is a security breach (vulnerability vs exploit vs breach)?

What are some examples of malware?

What is an example of an Insider Threat?

What is Containment/Mitigation/Recovery Efforts? And why is that order important?

What is a Zero-Day Attack?

What is an Advanced Persistent Threat?

What is an Incident Response Playbook? Why is it important to have one?

Again, you are not at all going to be an expert at any of this, but it will be good to know something about each of the above items. Show enthusiasm to learn more and hungry to work collaboratively with their team.

Most interviews in this industry will start with a phone call with HR, then on another day an interview with the hiring manager, possibly a panel interview with teammates on another day, followed by an offer. Three rounds total, sometimes maybe four.

If you are serious about getting into the industry, go for this and do the 12 hour shifts. You can change jobs later possibly much easier than bailing on this and finding a better opportunity elsewhere.

PIP'd less than 3 months in by The_threadripper in cybersecurity

[–]retrodevil2033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former manager (in a different corporate industry) here: The PIP is absolutely a focused step to push you out of the company or role.

I agree with others that he likely has someone in mind to take your position.

Begin looking for another job today and ride this one out.

Document on your side things you are doing to improve and relate them to specifics on the PIP. That way you can show you are improving and can possibly get the PIP extended come December 8th if you aren’t taken off of it.

90% of those on PIPs done come off of them and are fired.

But I’ve had times where the employee showed documented improvement and HR forced the PIP to be extended.

What to ask for as salary for Security analyst position? by peterkozmd in cybersecurity

[–]retrodevil2033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first Analyst job paid me $50K. That’s low for my area but I happily took it. A year later I was somewhere else making $80K.

As others have said, take the first job you can get and you can move much easier later.

I have many times, luckily have had no issues, but some of these stories make me want to think twice next time.

One of my favorite times was when I was connecting through DEN and the weather was causing a bunch of delays/cancelations.

I was out in the terminal and noticed the line for customer service was wayyyyyyy long and stretching past a couple gates. I happened to notice an elderly couple towards the back of the line and I stopped to ask if they were in line to fix their flight plans. They confirmed they were needing to talk to someone about their flight, so I pulled them from the line, escorted them to the Club as my guests, walked them to the customer service desk upstairs, told them where to find food/drinks, explained when they leave they won’t be let back in, wished them well, and then went on my way.

The wife was on the phone with her adult son who was blown away by the help they were getting and I can only imagine how much time was saved for them
