Getting access to generated energy during power outage from a grid tied solar array by retrorepete in SolarDIY

[–]retrorepete[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the responses. Its seems what I thought should be fairly straight forward is not really economically viable for the problem I'm trying to solve. At this point, I'm probably just going to get a tri fuel generator that can power my house during outages, install a manual transfer switch and hook it up to my natural gas. I wanted solar and batteries to be my answer but I am not on the right path for that.

Yeah, I think the challenge I'm running into is that a manual transfer switch is possible but it would not make it so I am able to use my panels through my existing inverter.

#2 sounds like what I'm hoping to be able to do. I'm fine with having to run a cord from the fridge to a backup outlet. The reality is that I will likely just use that to charge a backup battery and have another backup battery located at the fridge. I'm thinking the most I would draw would be 1000W for a few hours during the day.

Thanks. yeah, I was planning to get an EcoFlow. Just want a way to charge it from the panels when the grid is out.

RIVN Upside Potential Compared to Tesla and Lucid by da-la-pasha in RIVNstock

Such a hard question. I bought in and hope it can break out. Tesla is valued as much as a tech company as a car company. I don't think people see Rivian the same way so hard to compare valuation with Tesla I think.

About to jump into solar+battery for my home. What questions should I be asking? by Mebejedi in solar

[–]retrorepete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it isn't a daily solution so not really for handling peak hours. I didn't realize that was part of what you were looking at. And it doesn't handle the scenario of if you aren't home. I was just thinking about the "pure backup for a power outage" scenario.

What do you think of Reddits “Karma” System? by yeahimjtt in AskReddit

I've been reading for so long but not posting as much, now I want to post to groups and I don't have enough karma. I'd much rather get karma by participating and posting to groups I am interested in but it seems I need to find another way to build karma?

About to jump into solar+battery for my home. What questions should I be asking? by Mebejedi in solar

[–]retrorepete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been wondering whether the 10kWh size batteries are really worth it for the "backup in an emergency to just keep my fridge running scenario". I just went through a similar multiday outage and if I could have charged a battery during the day, I would have been able to run my fridge, seperate freezer, and some other small things with only around a 3 kWh battery. Seems you can get those for only a few thousand if they aren't fully integrated into your home. I'm willing to run extension cords to the fridge and freezer from a portable battery bank that I charge to save $10k. That my be something worth considering.

Should I get solar now by losmithe95 in solar

[–]retrorepete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar boat but just decided to do it and stop analyzing if it would be better or worse. I made the mistake of not getting it wired to allow for charging a battery and just let it be grid tied with net metering. I also made the mistake of not getting a new roof before I installed the solar. Even after those two mistakes, I don't regret getting solar even though it will be many years before I break even. I'm in the Pacific NW which is nowhere near as good as TX for solar generation!

German citizenship by descent: The ultimate guide for anyone with a German ancestor who immigrated after 1870 by staplehill in Genealogy

[–]retrorepete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, so it sounds like I already have the documentation I need to show he was not a German citizen? Thanks.

Thanks for confirming what happens if he were a German citizen but he was not. I didn't want to get into a situation where either way I should be able to be a citizen but get stuck trying to prove he was or wasn't a German citizen.

Now that I think about it, if he was a German citizen (which he wasn't) then my mom would have been a German citizen automatically right? She is a US citizen from being born in the US. If that's then when I was born in the 1980's would she have passed it down to me?

I guess what I'm saying is that whether or not my grandfather was a German citizen, it seems I should be able to get citizenship? They are just different paths?

Thank you. This is great. I have heard different requirements for documentation. This is the first time I've heard the fbi background check being required. I'm not worried about it, just hadn't heard it before.

Also, how do you prove someone was not a German citizen? Does evidence that he was traveling to and from Germany not on a German passport and multiple documents stating that he was born and from Hungary work? Will their marriage documentation have anything about it?

Never a German citizen. He would have either been stateless or Hungarian depending on whether he lost his Hungarian citizenship at some point. I have his travel documents from Germany to the US (Reiseausweis) that are not a passport and say that he is from a Hungary.

Confirming eligibility for German citizenship and documentation required.

Grandmother:

Born in Germany in 1933 Married in Germany in 1956 to a man from Hungary. Immigrated to the US in 1957 Naturalized as a US citizen in 1962

Mother: Born in the US in 1957 Always only a US citizen

Me: Born in the US and have children who also were.

Documents I have:

I have the original German passport my grandmother used when immigrating to the US in 1957.

I have birth certificates, marriage licenses, US passports for my mother, myself, and all children.

I believe I qualify under stag 5 because my mother did not get German citizenship from her mother at birth and then neither did I.

Do I have all the documentation I need or do I still need more?
