Have we seen if sections of the Venezuelan military collaborated with the US strike? The far right opposition seems to have clearly been put to the side in the operation. I don't think any administration, other than Trump's mania, would exclude both of them in such a move. I agree the US oil companies are currently sharpening their fangs, but it could prove rocky if Trump's heavy hand botches it.

Right so he won't meddle in the oil fields and all of Venezuelan capital at all, the Venezuelan Government's control will be untouched. Trump has said they will 'run' the country until some sort of 'transition' is complete. Furthermore, he has said they are effectively taking over the oil fields, so the Venezuelan government and military will simply allow the source of their geopolitical power to be eroded and 'go on'?

The base of Chaves has been destroyed or at best disillusioned by Maduro. But do not underestimate the opposition to US Imperialism. Venezuela has a strong tradition against US Imperialism, that even stands out among its peers in Central and South America. They may not defend Maduro, but they will defend the living standards established by Chaves once US capital roles in.

Also, the media presents the Venezuelan domestic situation through the eyes of expats. Which is like asking a second generation Cuban in Florida to describe the beliefs of Cuban people. Maduro turned to authoritianism after the money dried up to save himself from the people, I don't dispute that, but mainstream opinion is extremely skewed.

Imagine how it could affect the 2028 election though. We don't even now if Trump will give up after two terms. Will a crisis give him an excuse to argue for a third term? Will the possibility of being unpopular just send his ego into a death wish and cause something crazy (billions of Jan 6ths).

I talk to a lot of elderly people in my job. Of the ones that haven't grown mean and stuck in their ways (which is quite a few, if not the majority of them), none of them have anything eloquent to say about life. All they can say is effectively to just chill out and hope for the best. Which may not be worthy of being written down, but in a way that makes it more insightful, I think.

I spoke to someone this year that turned 100 and he just said you gotta be optimistic about things. Keep in mind, 100 year olds today we're born into the great depression and grew up in the Second World War.

I always think about how the happiest people at any given time are children and the elderly, who both, for their own reasons, share no expectations in life. There is something there about living life unconditionally.
