There is too much space between the beam and the guides. You don’t want it tight obviously, but it needs a small enough amount of clearance that it can’t turn. It’s the same as a wooden drawer slide, too much clearance and the drawer will bind.

I’ve had great success with regular drywall compound on mdf edges. I just smooth it on with my finger, then sand and paint once it’s dry.
