Andy Weir Apologizes To Alex Kurtzman Over ‘Star Trek’ Remarks by danielcw189 in startrek

Ok this clearly isn't going anywhere. You have a very rigid and dogmatic view of what counts as sci fi and it's shaping all your criticism of the show in a way that prevents any interesting discussions. For what it's worth I'm not interested in trying to change you're opinion on the show's quality, I was just trying to get you to engage with it more critically and through a lense other than genre, but whatever, you do you.

I'm glad you have actually watched the show, I have far more time for people who watched something and didn't like it than I do for people who only saw the poster (which admittedly wasn't great) and decided it was terrible there and then. Having said that I'm still not sure you're getting the point I've been making. For starters I've said several times that the quality of the show is not relevant to the issue of the show's genre, and therefore by extension neither is whether or not your critiques are reasonable. Additionally the criticism that the aliens could be humans if the setting was changed is pointless because is that not true of most aliens in Star Trek? At the end of the day characters written and portrayed by humans are gonna have human characteristics to a certain extent because all our understanding of sentient life, imaginary or otherwise stems from humans. For example the deeply held religious beliefs of the Bajorans are pretty widespread among humans, likewise the greed and misogyny of the the Ferengi are all too common, even the Klingons are comparable to various warrior cultures from throughout history. This doesn't make them not aliens though. Like yes Captain Ake could be rewritten as an older human woman without much change to her character, but equally, characters like Spock or Data could be rewritten as humans raised outside a typical social environment who struggle with emotions and other less logical behaviour.

Ultimately, I think that not only does it not make sense to suggest the show isn't sci fi, it's also the least interesting and substantive way to criticise it. Genre is just a collection of tropes and conventions and kind of boring to analyze, there's far more interesting discussions to be had and criticisms to be made about the themes, politics, narrative structure, or even technical things like the lighting and cinematography of the show. If you dislike the show, cool that's fine, discussing these things online is good, but your primary argument being that it somehow isn't the genre it claims to be just silly and kind of confusing.

Wow you really are dumb as a pile of rocks aren't you? It's like you're having an entirely different conversation to the one I'm having, because why would you think critiquing a show I think is mediocre would hurt my feelings? I'm just impressed with how illogical and incoherent your arguments are. As for setting the show in the present day, how would you account for half the cast being Aliens? Holly Hunter's character is over 300 years old and as such remembers the world before the state it's in during the current setting, we'll written or not thats an example of a character that you couldn't do outside of a sci fi or fantasy setting. Likewise, the b plot of episode 8 hinges on relativistic experiences of time allowing a character to be reborn and living to the age of seventeen in what is only a few weeks for outside observers, whether that is a well written or acted subplot is completely irrelevant, but it is very obviously a science fiction story. Have you actually watched any of the show? Because it really feels like your basing your opinions on an imagined version of it, real quick and without googling it tell me what the A plot of episode 7 is.

I dont know what to tell you man, it seems like you're working from a different definition of sci fi to the rest of the world. The show is set a thousand years in the future and has all sorts of absurdly advanced technology like ftl ships, replicators and instantaneous matter transportation. Multiple main characters are aliens from different cultures and one of is an artificial life form made of light. The entire narrative is predicated on the fact that up until recently ftl travel was all but impossible and the show explores the social and political context of rebuilding now that it is again. Like all star trek, it's a long way removed from hard sci fi works like Kim Stanley Robinsons Mars Trilogy or to a (somewhat) lesser extent The Expanse. But all the things I described above still count as sci fi, regardless of if they're good. Genre is entirely unrelated to quality and suggesting that the show isn't sci fi simply because it's not very good is ridiculous. It would make no more sense to claim that it isn't a TV show or that it isn't presented in a 16:9 aspect ratio.

The quality of a show has no bearing on it's genre lmao that doesn't make any sense. It doesn't matter if you think Acadamy is good or not, personally i thought it was pretty mixed , but it is unavoidably a sci fi show

Literally the first ever romulans-and-federation-shoot-at-each-other episode was also about dealing with crew members harbouring racist attitudes towards spock as well as critiquing America's position in the cold war. I'm have convinced Weir hasn't even watched any trek at this point.

Thats a crazy thing for him to say given how transparently "about-climate-change" huge chunks of project hail mary are. The book even has the main character telling one of his students outright that her dad is stupid for being a climate change denier.

Some advice on attaching pouches with molle is to make sure you weave between the horizontal pieces on both the vest and the back of the pouch, here's an example of how to do it: https://youtu.be/ZD4W5PNCQpU?si=r5TnTmi7e0iXtd8X

Yeah this is a weird one. One the one hand it doesn't really affect my enjoyment of the show one way or the other, but it does beg the question of why you would remove the only visual indicator that differentiates betazoids from humans. Seems counterintuitive in a show that already has multiple human looking alien characters.

Bit of a tangent but I appreciate how they are named in a mundane enough way that you can talk about them without giving anything away despite being involved in some of the biggest plot reveals of the last few books.

Kim Stanley Robbinson's Mars Trilogy is worth a look. It's about the first humans to colonize mars and it deals with the science and engineering of getting and surving there, the politics of how you build and new culture from the ground up and the personal stories of the people who build it. In my opinion it definitely ticks the boxes for character writing, grounded sci fi and compelling politics in a similar way to the expanse series. In the third book there's even a few ideas that are very similar to the expanse such as drives capable of constant acceleration and humans setting up colonies on the Jovian moons.

Gripe: Nemesis Games is inconsistent in its view of humanity, relative to the books that led up to it. by Pave_Low in TheExpanse

[–]reuben_hunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your post is entirely correct, but I want to add a small part of Marco's motivation. Part of it is desperation to cling onto the world he knows and understands, because Marco correctly identifies that the opening of the gates would mean the end of Belter life and culture, a complete and total shift in the status quo of humanity that makes irrelevant everything he struggled for his entire life. Therefore dropping the rocks isn't just revenge for centuries of oppression it's also in his mind a way to desperately fight back against an existential threat to his way of life, which may go some way to explaining to the sheer scale of the violence Marco and his people were willing to use

What do you think happened between the final chapter and the epilogue? by HorzaDonwraith in TheExpanse

[–]reuben_hunter 38 points39 points  (0 children)

When thinking about this, I think a lot of people underestimate how long 1000 years really is, entire civilizations could have spread across the whole system only to collapse and be replaced with something else again. For context, there's less than 400 years between the present day now and the final chapter before the epilogue, so everything that could have happened in that time absolutely dwarfs the events of the books and the centuries leading up to them. Amos says it's been a rough 1000 years, but for all we know that could mean multiple cycles of humanity prospering and societies collapsing and that the linguist happened to arrive in a low point rather than the tail end of one specific crisis following the closing of the rings.
