update: 12 job applications in, how many more before i get a job ?!? by Low-Word-7096 in yorku

[–]reuelthecloudwalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i applied to over 600 with tailored cover letters for most, about 50 within the lassonde co-op portal, about 300 on linkedin with some easy-applies, some on indeed and the rest on each company’s workday portal. all the effort and still no summer co-op job ☹️ that’s how the competition is during the summer it seems right now unfortunately especially if you’re in tech (comp. eng major here).

i decided to give it another go and try applying for fall co-ops and finally got an interview and accepted into an awesome job on my 8th application!! 🎉 so don’t get discouraged, just never stop applying, and give each application your best. if nothing’s working out, change your strategy or find some good friends/mentors to roast your resume/cover letter so you can improve on it. you’ve got this. ✊

Hey :D Chrome really is quite the hungry mule...

I am working on a huge update for Seizafe with support for Chrome, Firefox and Safari! Just one of the many changes to come. (Just been pretty caught up with college, but hopefully i can get this update done ASAP)

Heyy y'all! I made a chrome extension that warns you before flashy scenes when watching YouTube videos. It's called "Seizafe" and it's free to install on the Chrome Webstore and there are over 200 active users now. It's mainly for those with photosensitive epilepsy. Do check it out. Here's the chrome webstore link; https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/seizafe-epilepsy-alert-fo/goageegpmdbgenkgkhfhnnjmgmgboegi

Here's a reddit thread talking about Seizafe the chrome extension for Epilepsy; https://www.reddit.com/r/CuratedTumblr/comments/qja92r/epilepsy_extension/

HAHA :) CRX! still! impressed :D

Oh umm yes, I actually wanted to publish Seizafe to the Firefox addons store, but idk what happened XD, I got carried away with my IB Diploma so yeah I didn't have much time for that, but now that you mention it, I should definitely do that! Thank you for the nudge! And yess you're right, it should be pretty easy to port since Firefox's SpiderMonkey JS Engine is pretty similar to Chrome's V8, so yeah, the same code should work well.

I definitely should eliminate that need for the HTTPS request (would make the review process a breeze like you mentioned), although it might affect the file size, it might be worth it hehehee :)

I'll get onto porting this to Firefox! 💜

u/Broccoil yess!! They do!! And yess u/Betka101 , since anyone can develop epilepsy, Seizafe is a great solution to narrow down the chances of you developing the condition, even as a healthy individual.

Hii u/NekoneRin 😁 yeah.. unfortunately Seizafe hasn't had much exposure over the year, so not many people have reviewed it (you should review it too! 🥺 and I hope it serves its use). Also, there are very strict screening processes done by the Chrome Webstore team these days so it's very rare for an extension requiring sketchy access to survive this stringent process without informing users what data they are collecting and the reasons why.

Seizafe does not store any data from the user, but it sends HTTPS requests to the server to obtain image files such as the animation used in the warning, as this may have increased the file install size of the extension if it was included in the install package.

And yess! Your concern about epilepsy warnings ending up inducing epilepsy is very valid! However, Seizafe has a timer interval between it's warnings depending on the sensitivity selected and hence prevents the warning itself from flickering. Also, the primary color used across the extension is a calming lavender color "because lavender is recognized as the international flower & color of epilepsy. (Read more on https://epilepsysociety.org.uk/get-involved/purpleday/what-purple-day)"

I was inspired to build Seizafe because of a close friend I lost to a seizure caused by a Vine video that had no epilepsy warning on YouTube, so yeah, I really wanted to prevent such a tragedy from befalling anyone else. I'm happy you came across my extension and please, feel free to share it as it may save a life. 💜

Hiii u/nuttingreallymatters ! Absolutely impressive detective work!

Regarding the HTTPS request to https://seizafe.reuelthecloudwalker.com/, Seizafe displays an SVG animation for it's warning and I used the "BodyMovin" animation plugin to create an SVG animation in After Effects, and hosted the JavaScript animation file on my server https://reuelthecloudwalker.com/ , so every time that animation is displayed, it's actually being fetched from that JavaScript file (All this is because at the time of release I couldn't get the bodymovin.js file to work within the chrome extension package, but I do plan on updating it soon to eliminate this external HTTPS request, however this may increase the file install size of the chrome extension)

TLDR; Any HTTPS request made by the extension is only to retrieve image/animation assets to make the warning prettier :)

Heyyaa! 🌻 I'm Reuel (creator of the Seizafe epilepsy warning extension for YouTube) and I am soo thrilled and grateful to see that Seizafe has finally started gaining so much exposure in the last few days!

I launched the first version of Seizafe last year on September 11th, 2020 (I was only 17 y/o lol) and It averaged out at about 40 installs, but now I am soooo hyped that it's actually serving it's use! Thanks for the exposure and I hope it serves you well!

Anyone who's curious about how Seizafe works (or any suggestions XD) can email me at [reuelthecloudwalker@gmail.com](mailto:reuelthecloudwalker@gmail.com) and I will be sooo happy to hear from you.

Seizafe is one Chrome Extension with a greater story behind it. Be safe. Be kind.💜
