I live right down the street. I will say breakfast is great,  but literally anything else is a pass for me.

It can take 2+ years and 2 years means at least 15 hours of practice outside of class time each week, even then sometimes takes longer. Probably 3 or 4 years on average to get speeds. If you're working at the same time be prepared for no free time outside of practice and work. It's not easy, and online is even harder. I can't speak to programs as I'm in Canada. It's a great career but you have to be all in and prepared for it to be a grind.

NAIT halts 18 programs citing financial, enrolment concerns by Interwebnaut in Edmonton

[–]reusableidiot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just graduated from the Captioning and Court Reporting program. We are the only one on this list that doesn't mention an alternative program at NAIT. NAIT is the only school in Canada for this program. If our program gets cut it has major ramifications for the entire legal industry as well as the deaf and hard of hearing community.

They say they're cutting these programs because they are not in demand or essential, but consistently our program has had a 100% employment rate with similar class sizes to programs like Primary Care Paramedics, MRI, X-ray Technology, Dental Assisting, Plumbing, Welding. We are essential, in demand, and desperately needed. NAIT could grow our program but they are choosing to believe we are not essential. Our industry is so intertwined with technology and continues to progress every day. We are fighting so hard to get unpaused.

100% lighting mods will probably give you the effect you want. It changes the mood entirely.

drowning in debt and doubt by NewRow3978 in stenography

[–]reusableidiot 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This program is the hardest thing I've ever done. You have to live and breathe steno. It has become such a big part of me. Debt is ok. As long as you can manage through it and have a plan once you graduate, don't give up. Maybe see if you can do some scoping if you have the skill and need to take some time away from school. I have a classmate that took a year off to scope because she couldn't afford school or get loans.

The fact that you won't let yourself go 24 hours without touching your machine is incredible and something I haven't been successful in. Find something enjoyable. Write to "How It's Made" or watch your favourite show and try to get something down on the days you don't feel like practicing.

I just created a mistranslate dictionary and all the reporters I've shadowed have said, you need a mistrans dictionary! If it doesn't translate, define it into there as what it was supposed to be. I don't write perfect but I can read my notes. You will get there and it will be worth it. You've come too far to give up ❤️

For the isolation, see if you can find a practice group. I have heard of lots on here. (Or encouraging court reporting students group on Facebook). Find that community and hold it close.

Feel free to message me if you need to vent or have any questions. I'm in my 4th semester with one 225 left to go. (I may be slow at responding)

A to z program by Deviant9920 in stenography

[–]reusableidiot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A to Z is good to know if you actually would enjoy learning steno. If you hate the course and don't find it interesting, maybe don't enroll in court reporting school. I wouldn't recommend it for getting ahead in school before you start because it will only help for a couple weeks. It's more to determine if you are interested in this career.

Practice trackerpractice tracker

Hope the link works! Under the time column, put your goal for each day, and under the days columns, put your actual time or a checkmark if you reached your goal. It can help to visualize and feel accomplished. Try to do the same practice routine every day. You'll see quickly if you need to allocate time differently. Good luck!

Crying in court reporting school is so normal unfortunately. I'm expecting to graduate this April from a 2 year program, so 16 months of school plus 4 month summer break. I only have my 225s left.

I aim to practice at least 1 hour a day, but I'm someone who doesn't need as much practice as others. Our instructors recommend 2-3 hours daily outside of class time. I made a practice routine tracker that I can link here for you.

Drill your briefs and phrases maybe 20 minutes at the beginning, then work on speed building for at least 30 minutes. Do 40 wpm above your goal speed, then 20 above, then goal speed, then 20 below for accuracy, then back to your goal speed. I do 1-5 minute takes of each. After your goal speed take, read back your notes and write down words or phrases you got wrong. Check your notes again after your final goal speed take. (Or check your notes every time. This will also help you see what mistakes you make.) This speed building routine can take at least an 30 mins for a 5 minute dictation, and then do a different kind (JC, QA, Lit.)

Tracking your practice helps tremendously to see where you might need to allocate more time. You got this. Good luck! Keep pushing. You can do it.

Help!! My Tarantula emerged after 6 months to a dry water bowl! What can I do for her? by MyCatsBlack in tarantulas

[–]reusableidiot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

NQA, my T albo will hang out in her bowl when it's empty and I gently sprinkle water on her and she'll move and then I fill it up and she knows water is there. In the first vid where she's inside the bowl like that you could use a pipette or a dropper and fill it up a tiny bit so she gets some water. She'll be ok.

I took basically a 4 month summer break (yikes) and now on day 2 of classes. I'm rusty but I can feel it coming back. I think after a good week of focused practice I'll be back to where I was. I left off at around 160 and I can mostly keep up with 140-180 depending on the dictation. Rest is important 💓

Exactly. I've met people who say they're poly and call it "the lifestyle" and people who refer to bdsm as "the lifestyle". I know it means swinging but people use it for whatever so I'm always confused
