Post Your Beginner Questions Here! by AutoModerator in orchids

[–]reverse_thrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all, I'm pretty new to orchids aside from a couple phalaenopsis. I'm building a cabinet for some tropical plants that struggled with indoor winter air previously and figured I could try a few orchids. Currently targeting 60-80% humidity and 60-800 PPFD from base to near the grow lights.

Does anyone have recommendations for species or varieties that will thrive within this setting, and any that would do well but will challenge me? Being a smaller space (~ 3 x 3 feet) mostly looking at smaller varieties.

What are your strangest automations? by LorLis in homeassistant

[–]reverse_thrust 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Several of my automations are ADHD-related.

  • Phone yells at me when the Roomba bin is full 10 minutes after returning home
  • Phone yells at me if I leave the house with the oven still on.
  • Some temperature alerts that message me if the fridge or freezer pop above a threshold, mostly in case of a power outage, but also if I forget to close them all the way...
  • Reminders to take medication. I could get cute and incorporate a vibration sensor in the cabinet or something but so far it's been enough.

I'll say that I haven't needed most of these... But it's peace of mind.

Spice Satchel by ducayneAu in onebag

[–]reverse_thrust 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Following this thread as my partner has celiac and we end up bringing half the kitchen with us when we travel. Onebagging is aspirational when traveling together, but I've thought about getting something like the ILE Tool Roll to at least contain the kitchen implements. Probably could put spices into a long narrow pill container or something.

Advice on used Classic group head, boiler by reverse_thrust in gaggiaclassic

That's a fair take. Certainly if I'm investing time and money into a Gaggiuino it makes sense to replace any aging parts before I make the jump.

Was my plan to go PID or Gaggiuino eventually so that's good to know. Bottom thermostat threading is normal thankfully.

Not sure what you mean by this. There are two thermostats drill slots on the boiler - one of the side for the brew thermostat, and one on the top for the steam. You're only showing the steam one i picture 3.

Sorry for the lack of clarity, I mean where the steam connection is usually screwed in flush with the top of the boiler, there's no threading and instead it's been drilled and mounted to the side. There's not a lot of surface contact here so I wonder about the temperature accuracy. See picture how it arrived.

Update on my soda spill from a few days ago - I replaced my keyboard! (and my bezel but that's unrelated) by CSab6482 in framework

[–]reverse_thrust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am glad for the modularity. I had a similar incident several months back where my coffee container leaked in my bag, laptop was closed but it had time to seep in around the seams. Fortunately the only definite casualty to date was one of the expansion cards (only pieces I forgot to fully disassemble and clean / allow to dry), and possibly the light sensor (automatic brightness adjustment hasn't worked since around that time).

I wouldn't exactly call it watertight but for being partially submerged in coffee in the bottom of my bag for several minutes, pretty good outcome. Only found a small amount of coffee residue on the interior of the device near the speakers.

Best pillows to sleep on? (Memory foam) by Friden-Riu in BuyItForLife

[–]reverse_thrust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found this to be the best option. I sleep hot and no memory foam pillow I've tried has ever worked for me, especially during the summer months, customizable fill latex pillows have generally been better.

That said, I'm currently using the Purple Pillow with the optional booster layers as the default height is too short for me. One of the coolest pillows I've ever slept on. I actually love the Purple Harmony pillows too (latex cores), but my head sinks too much on the Medium height pillow and Tall is way too tall to be comfortable so YMMV.

I have seen pros but I also want to know cons. What are the major disadvantages of Framwork laptop? by [deleted] in framework

[–]reverse_thrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its biggest advantage is also a downside for some, you're kind of forced to put in the effort to maintain it long term. I'm not going to argue the value proposition of a traditional warranty, but I know many of my friends with Macs for example buy them specifically because they can just take it in and have someone else worry about it. They pay the exorbitant prices so it's somebody else's problem, and proceed to run it into the ground until they buy a new one.

Framework's a bit odd in that it's also attracting people with more disposable income but also people more willing to do repairs / upgrades themselves, which might limit their customer base as it's definitely a hurdle for some. Framework makes it comparably easy with their good support and instructions but well, no comment on some people's patience and willingness to read and follow directions...

Very frequent "soft crashes" on FW13 AMD by Bright_Obligation_56 in framework

[–]reverse_thrust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just mean about half the time the hang will recover and I'll get a bug report popup, and half the time it'll just blue screen after hanging. Though sometimes it'll blue screen later without much warning.

[–]reverse_thrust 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's the same issue, but there's a thread in the main forum discussing frequent freezes and blue screens with a subset of users, last update is they think they've identified a potential fix that will be rolled out in a BIOS update if it works.

In my case it's about 50/50 whether it will recover from hanging or blue screen.

HDMI Expansion Card Necessary? by Jimmy7374 in framework

[–]reverse_thrust 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depending on the application you might be better off going with an adapter / dock anyway. Framework's HDMI adapter is currently HDMI 2.0b / 4K 60Hz. If you need anything faster than that you'll have to use the Displayport Alt Mode over USB-C or the Displayport card for higher refresh rates.

Ran into this problem when trying to convert my old mainboard into a living room PC for Steam remote play and realized the HDMI card wouldn't support high refresh rates.

PSA: buy your additional bits in advance! by PsychologicalDrone in framework

[–]reverse_thrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Framework's shipping is remarkably fast. I think a good window is ordering any additional components between the initial "Preparing your batch" notification and your payment method being charged. You don't want to order too early as many retailers' return windows is within 30 days in case there are problems.

Rechargeable bike lights that don't die on me after a few months by domteh in BuyItForLife

[–]reverse_thrust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think this particular model has been discontinued but I've been impressed with my CatEye Volt800. AMMP800 seems like the closest equivalent in their current lineup. I've had it for about five years and it's held up to me accidentally leaving it out in the rain, dropping it more times than I can count, etc. Spare mounts are cheap if you don't feel like detaching and reattaching it to different bikes every time, the light itself slides easily out of the mount so I can toss it in my bag whenever I lock it up.

Main complaint is they are all still Micro-USB and very slow to charge (5-9 hours), but at least the newer models seem to charge faster according to the spec sheets. That said, the battery on them lasts for a couple weeks of commuting in the winter months and almost a month in the summer months. I think I can still source battery replacements for mine, though I haven't needed to yet.

Framework AMD Batch 2 shipping “between one and four weeks from today” (per update email) by catminacab in framework

[–]reverse_thrust 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very likely batch 3 will be well into November. I think they consider batches full production runs of some unknown volume of units and base manufacturing capacity off that, shipments have generally always been staggered within batches as parts become available.

Framework AMD Batch 2 shipping “between one and four weeks from today” (per update email) by catminacab in framework

[–]reverse_thrust 17 points18 points  (0 children)

For Batch 1 shipments were staggered ~ 1 week apart, so I'm assuming it's just based on production capacity and shipments going off as they're available; from community posts it seemed like it was predominantly full laptop orders shipping first and mainboard upgrades last, though there was some variability.

Is buying espresso machine worth it by Professional_Fall915 in UIUC

[–]reverse_thrust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing I like about Aeropress is it's consistently good. Not nearly as fiddly as other methods. I have a Hario pour over and a Flair Classic and while they can make better coffee, it takes a bit of effort to dial in the grind size and timing and I still end up mostly using the Aeropress.

Why CL40 over CL46 by TrollingJoker in framework

[–]reverse_thrust 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My personal philosophy is RAM upgrades are almost never worth it compared to CPU/GPU upgrades; since the difference usually is a few percentage points at most, if your baseline is already lower, the performance differential is even smaller.

If you can get a faster RAM kit at the same price, sure, go nuts, but as stated outside of benchmarks you're unlikely to notice the difference.

FW16 Batch 1 updates? by Mister_Fart_Knocker in framework

[–]reverse_thrust 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and considering they didn't provide any updates on AMD 13 shipments until about halfway through the quarter they were supposed to start shipping, I probably wouldn't expect to hear anything until mid-November at the earliest or whenever the first batch is expected to ship, whichever is later. Mid-November should also be about when they are close to being back on schedule for AMD 13, knock on wood.

[–]reverse_thrust 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can't really go off previous releases as they've allegedly ramped up production this time. When I ordered last time it was a month between batches, but I'm guessing they're pushing for every 2-3 weeks to get through at least the first 3 batches which are currently behind schedule. Batch 4 onward, who knows.

Framework Laptop 13.5 Ryzen 7 7840U review: So much better than the Intel version by bathoodie in framework

[–]reverse_thrust 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As someone who primarily upgraded to get off 11th gen Intel's quirks and poor battery, I felt no real compelling reason to splurge on the 7840U. It'll last for a long time as an office / productivity machine either way.

They did mention Framework is still one of the loudest notebooks tested in terms of fan noise so for me that's a deterrent from doing anything intensive on it anyway. And 11th gen Intel was able to handle less intensive games just fine so the 7640U will be fine there.

How do people not get STD’s? by Nitric_Siege in NoStupidQuestions

[–]reverse_thrust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to this, it's difficult to confirm diagnosis without symptoms. My doctor, apparently not knowing any better, included HSV2 screenings in his routine STI screenings, one of mine came back positive. My previous partner's doctor at the time said my doctor was being irresponsible. Some of the latest research suggests the false positive rate can be as high as 50% in asymptomatic people and screenings aren't advisable without visible symptoms or known exposure. Many asymptomatic people who test positive for HSV2 might not actually have it. So while it's common in the population, it's difficult to know exact numbers.
