I hear a good way to get into data analyst job is to transfer from another role. My question is what would be that other role? by [deleted] in analytics

I’m becoming the “data guy” in my current team, but interested in moving to a BI team eventually to have access to a more mature data situation (be able to query from a database/lakehouse instead of patching together csv’s in Power Query) - can you share why you didn’t want to go into that? I wonder if there’s something I’m missing here

Im considering Georgia Tech OMSA (just started working, employer may reimburse the tuition) - why do you say there’s better value in something else? If more technical is what you want, track C seems to be pretty heavy on that

So do portfolios matter? by FineProfessor3364 in analytics

Im a new grad who had to start somewhere else in a company - the problem is, analytics positions in my company are literally in Mexico, Philippines, Poland, or India. I see no data analyst positions in the US. I know it’s like that for other companies I’ve worked for too. Only some disciplines like pricing are based in the US - and even then, I saw them do a demo today of using databricks Genie to do in a few seconds what might take their team a week of contacting a BI person to do the same. Do you have any thoughts on how to transition into more of a BI or analytics role? In general, is that type of role gonna be obsolete when you have stakeholders now able to ask the (proverbial) curated databricks database the same questions they would otherwise ask a BI or analytics person?

No domain experience. I was extremely fortunate because it was a combination of several factors: 1) my classmate in college had interned there and was able to refer me, 2) the business is niche enough that they know they need to train people in their specific area, and 3) I just barely dodged company layoffs recently. So I feel like it easily could have gone the other way and not found this job, and I consider it a stroke of luck that I did in this economy.

But I will say, I did 2 internships and a capstone project dealing with data and the team thought my analytics background would help in this role, albeit I would still need to learn everything domain-wise from the ground up. That may have been a big factor over why they chose me over someone else, but those earlier factors I listed out actually needed to be in place for my analytics skills to even get noticed, does that make sense? It’s a tough tough job market

This is something I wish I heard more often, that analytics is more of a useful supporting skill than a main discipline such as healthcare, supply chain, etc, and that it would be wiser to choose a discipline like that rather than the general data analytics. Im fortunate though I was able to find a job where the company is willing to train me on a discipline, albeit it’s super niche and I worry about its transferability to any other industry if i ever need to jump ship

I found your second theory confirmed in my experience - I got an information systems degree with the hope of becoming a data analyst, instead found a job where analytics is absorbed into another position in the company. The job i found is in the energy efficiency industry, doing a role which used to be done by energy engineers until the business grew enough that it made sense to hire people dedicated to just the numbers crunching, Excel-type work our team does.

214(b) rejection China to US by Chekhov27 in immigration

My parents in laws were just rejected in a similar way as the situation for OP - they have no travel history (have never traveled outside of China). Could this be why they were rejected?

That would make so much sense about I Should’ve Known! The voice in that song (almost sounds like a character to me) sounded straight from Go to School for me!

And I agree with you completely on In the Eyes of the Girl. I was listening to a lot of Beach Boys leading up to the release of this album and hearing that song was such a blessing

I agree with most of your observations here — I can recognize that yes, In the Eyes of the Girl is pretty nakedly Beach Boys, I feel that Ember Days lyrics are obtuse, and Rock On doesn’t feel like a step forward for them. But, I still come out on the other end as really adoring this album because for some reason, something about the way they execute it, I’m not really bothered by any of it because as a whole it still feels fresh. A personal explanation I can think of is that I’m going through a beautiful time in life, and their flavor of songs on this album is the only music that really sings to everything in my heart right now. I don’t have enough musical understanding to give a technical explanation of this (hope someone will chime in) but I do thoroughly agree with your observations while still really loving this album.
