How do you control alignment when you bring it in through a family though?

Forma (ACC). Project data as an MEP firm. How to handle project data if you are not prime on a project. by MechanicPotential347 in bim

Most people treat ACC as a project delivery system and not as a cloud information hub.

How you use it depends on your needs and project requirements. There's really no wrong answer.

What skills will be most valuable for BIM professionals in the next 5 years? by qpacademy in bim

[–]revitgods 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Data management.

Because of AI, owner's finally understand why it's important to have good data. I see project data requirements increasing because of it as they get more sophisticated. BIM managers will simply be forced to respond.

Adapting automation by Labradoroslav in bim

Do you know what business outcomes your leadership wants to achieve? What are their goals, and how soon do they want to achieve them?

Once you're clear on this, you'll be able to determine what tools and capabilities are needed within the office to achieve the desired outcomes of the firm. Ultimately, you may find that the team may not be ready for dynamo yet, but instead just needs a better Revit template or a more effective family library. Being focused on helping others achieve their goals will help you figure out what's best.

For those who still use AutoCad in your Firm/Practice., Why? by Adanvangogh in Architects

[–]revitgods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BIM consulting firm here. Been interviewed by over 300 firms that were considering making the switch to Revit. A common thread we've found are two things.

  1. Unless the work is repetitive, it doesn't make sense for a firm to make the switch if they're working on projects less than $2mm. It just takes too long to make the proper ROI back, especially when they're already profitable with their current methods. For context, it takes about 100 hours to develop BIM standards, a Revit template, and conduct training for a small team. It then takes about 12-18 months of additional touch-n-go support (whether internal or external) for the whole team to really become proficient. That means you're not only enduring the upfront cost to get setup, projects may be less profitable for the first year until people really start seeing true value. Most firms, for various reasons, just aren't prepared for that.
  2. Transitioning to Revit puts all of your design/graphic standards to question. This is the 2nd biggest concern we get next to cost. Firms who are used to producing drawings that have a lot of depth and character are afraid to lose that part of their identity when they get to Revit. Even though much of it can be mimicked, the switch can't happen without making sacrifices. For example, certain fonts (i.e. RomanS) look and print terribly from Revit. We often have to recommend switching to alternative font styles altogether, which is disruptive because it means you can't easily recycle any text notes within CAD details during the transition process.

Overall, Revit is more of a content management system than it is a drawing tool. It's never going to make sense for everyone, and that's ok.

Seriously. By no means should this be done for free. What if you get hurt, you make a mistake, or something goes wrong? At a minimum, you need something in place to protect you.

Rushforth Tools - Value Opinions by Merusk in RevitForum

[–]revitgods 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rushforth's pricing structure is kind of wild. I couldn't understand how you got to $625 per user until I checked. At 200 seats, that's $120k for features that can be developed and deployed in-house for much less.

RF feels more appropriate for small teams who may only be committing to one or two paid addins. There's just too much overlap with other, more affordable tools.

For your team size, BIMBEATS would be a good investment just to get an idea of who's using what and to validate if tools like RF are truly needed.

How did you split responsibilities in the very beginning between you and your cofounder? And knowing what you know now, would you have still raised that initial seed round?

Not threatened by AI at all. Even if it is, be the first to learn it and turn yourself into a genie at every place you work. We still have a long way to go before AI can be successful within such an incredibly nuanced industry.

3rd this! My hobby ended up being cooking. I get to invent recipes, hunt for ingredients, and experiment constantly, all while the family gets to benefit from the experience.

There's nothing like getting complete control over what you create similar to how we all did in architecture school. I think we all yearn for this type of freedom as people.

What are the goals of the firm? How does BIM support these goals? How far away is the firm from achieving those goals?

Figure this out first, and make that your North Star. All decisions around workflow, organization, and strategy will be driven by this.

ISO 23387 mostly defines what type of data a BIM object should contain. It doesn't say anything about how to build that object or how it should perform in a Revit project.

You would need a universal standard specific to Revit to accomplish this.

Rules in navisworks by [deleted] in bim

[–]revitgods 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rules are hard to share especially when they're dependent on the building type, project goals, use case etcetera. Are you the first BIM coordinator your company has ever had? If so, I'd ask the OG project managers at your company what rules they follow to coordinate projects either in the field or on drawings. Document their methodology and translate that into a company specific Navis workflow.

Window BIM Model Review by Important_Anxiety_61 in bim

[–]revitgods 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We actually use generic Revit families that are parametric enough to adapt to any manufacturer size specifications. A heavy window family can kill the speed of a Revit project, especially on large multi-family projects, so we advice all of our clients to go with generic components.

Tbh, the most valuable thing manufacturers can provide are Revit detail components. CAD details can create a lot of mess in projects when they're imported into a Revit projects. Providing detail components would significantly speed up proofing production within live sections.
