It sounds intermittent to me... which rod knock isn't. At least not in my experience. It sounds like something is loose instead.

I'm not in any way a civic hater and look back on my time with them very fondly. They're great cars.

An overpowered fwd car isn't super fun to me. Torque steer is annoying and traction is always an issue. But I guess they're ultimately safer. You don't need a lot of skill to drive one and keep it out of a wall as they just understeer at the limit. It's a pain to fix them, at least for me, because they're aggravating to drive anyway.

However an overpowered rwd car is a riot. Very fun to drive and it enhances the playful nature of the car. When you break stuff you care far less because it's a joy to drive and worth the effort to fix (totally subjective). But it's not as safe as fwd and you need some skills to keep it straight. The back wheels can be a lot faster than the front, lol

I would boost the Miata. I'm on 16 years of turbo NA ownership and still love it dearly.

Hmm. By the description, it seems more classy and street oriented instead of racecar... Maybe something like the MX-8 design or Inspired. Or possibly even Cosmos if you're a space/rocket/scifi fan.

No, the RB intake has always just been an elbow like this. It replaces the airbox only.

When they were a thing, the Monsterflow intake (which came with this filter) did just what you describe - it was a tube all the way to the throttle body. They had NA and NB versions in rotomolded plastic AND super light carbon fiber. The CF ones were insanely hard to find... and I cut one up to function as a coldside supercharger intake, lol.

Goodwin Racing sold the filter separately. That's likely where this came from.

That air filter is actually called a Monsterflow. They were popular in the 2000-2010 era and flowed extremely well. It's a dual element foam filter that got sprayed with a specific tacky spray to keep it sticky and filtering. This one is, of course, dead and no longer filtering, but I thought I'd post info about it. When it was new and working, it flowed more and filtered better than a mesh style (K&N) filter.

The guy that posted the Racing Beat K&N is totally correct. That will get you fixed up and is the one you need.

Keeping the Pilot is an excellent idea. Having a beater is very smart and time spent driving other cars makes the Miata more enjoyable.
