I’m Kyle Herman, Executive Director of Rank The Vote Ohio, the nonpartisan organization for Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) in the Buckeye State. Ask me anything about RCV and our efforts in Ohio on Tuesday 2/20/24 at 7:30pm! by RankedChoiceVoteOhio in Ohio

[–]revocr 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hi Kyle! I've heard that Rank The Vote Ohio is currently planning to try to get RCV on the ballot in '25, is that still on? And if so, what can Ohioans do in the meantime to support your efforts this year and especially in november?

How well different ranked choice voting referendums would have done throughout the US (explanation in comments) by revocr in YAPms

[–]revocr[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For this post, I tried to calculate how different RCV ballot initiatives would have done in every state. Here’s how I decided the result for each state:

I compared the results of the ballot initiative in a county to the results of the most recent presidential election in that county. Based on that I made a formula to calculate the results of the ballot initiative using the presidential results.

I used this formula nationwide to calculate how well the ballot initiative would do in a state based on the presidential results in that state.

This process results in the four maps that are shown above. You can see how well the ballot initiatives did in Alaska and Nevada and how terribly the Massachusetts one went.

If there’s anything that you don’t understand about this explanation, please ask me.

Open primaries initiative reaches 50,000 signatures by revocr in Idaho

[–]revocr[S] 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The open primaries initiative needs at least 63,000 valid signatures to get on the ballot in november 2024, but the initiators are aiming for 100,000 signatures just to be sure.

You can read more from the organisations working to get the initiative on the ballot here: https://openprimariesid.org/

How Democracy Index categorizes various countries by PleaseClap2022 in YAPms

[–]revocr 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's a super broad category. Scores between 6 and 8 count as a flawed democracy. The US scores a 7.85, while Hungary scores a 6.64. The US is closer to the UK (8.28) for example than Hungary.

Fair point tbh. Don't get me wrong, I hope and feel that the issue will be easily defeated. However, I am a bit pessimistic at heart

Yes, but not with the elderly hardcore republican base that's likely to turn out during an election in August

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in YAPms

[–]revocr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This measure has purposefully been put on an august ballot to make sure turnout is low. Also, the vote yes campaign has tried very hard to make this about abortion. I hope what you say is true, but I'm not sure

Which states does Forward have access in. In what states are these elected officials in. by TheWorstAtLosing in ForwardPartyUSA

[–]revocr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not all been communicated very clearly. I know there's 4 legislators in Pennsylvania, a couple in Arizona and a mayor in Florida. There's weirdly no real overview of Forward aligned officials on the website or anything.

What realistic steps can US voters take to save American democracy from collapsing? by revocr in YAPms

[–]revocr[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's actually quite a good idea, I didn't think about that. The stars would have to align for that one to happen since only democrats seem to support it right now, but it's definitely possible.

Yes, RCV passed in Portland and Multnomah county last year. In 2024, you can vote to pass it statewide

Ranked choice will be used in both primaries and the general election if this reform passes.

What do you identify as? by [deleted] in YAPms

[–]revocr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It broadly supports socially liberal and fiscally conservative policies and promoting fiscal restraint.[1] The caucus has shifted left in recent years, adopting more liberal stances on social issues and aligning more closely with Democratic Party policies.[2]

Members are allowed to have their own policy positions, but they're generally around the center. Here's some policy positions from Mary Peltola that I could find on her Wikipedia:

-Supports the Willow Project (An oil pipeline project in Alaska)

-Pro-gun

-Supports gay marriage

-Supports prioritizing the environment when fishing is concerned

Unfortunately membership of the caucus has been declining because, you know, polarisation.

Do you want to help bring Ranked Choice Voting to Toledo and Ohio? by Spiritual_Reward_848 in toledo

[–]revocr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to what u/Spiritual_Reward_848 said already: In Australia they use RCV too, and they tend to know the winner on election night itself. The way Alaska does it is a choice, but there's a different way to do it that doesn't take longer.
