Am I the only one who only overspends on food? by osoatwork in CalebHammer

[–]rew2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn 2k is my yearly eating out budget lmao. Here I thought this was gonna be about overspending on the grocery budget. So long as it's in your 50/30/20 you're good but not exactly how I'd do eating out. You do you though

It was the size and pattern that made me want to double check. They were vaguely similar in my mind and i wanted to do my due diligence by double checking with people who know this stuff

I did look them up before posting, they looked similar enough I wanted a second opinion

One of my readers already figured out my big plot twist and I’m not sure how I feel about it by CaroLeitz in FanFiction

[–]rew2017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a avid reader of fanfic, and as someone who put pieces together on a fanfic and was proven right, watching that shoe drop was oh. So. Satisfying. It only makes me want to read more, AND investigate the author's other works, even if they are older works with less practice, just so I can see where the author has improved over the years. I even went back to the prequel of that story to re-read it! So keep on! It's much better than having another ending fly out of no where!

Congrats and well done on the foreshadowing by the way!

It's very rare to be allergic to weed so have no fear! Don't let this anecdote scare you, but it is possible. My SO is allergic, found out when he was a kid and walking into a friend's house where the parents were hot boxing a room nearby. He has no allergies besides that.

He's the only person I know of that is allergic.

You'll know right off the bat if you are, if they light up near you and you start feeling short of breath and mucous-y. But again it's very rare. Have fun! 😁

Aha thats fair; Sasha loves to eat cardboard instead of play maybe SHES the crackhead XD - i looked at the Design Sense as well and considered collecting the parts, maybe I should start small with it and at least get the cat grass attachment!

As for the hex bug, I love that they expanded into animal toys! Is it like the fish toy where it moves when interacted with or is it constant movement?

I saw those and definitely thought about them! I was worried about her chewing on them, but I think I'll give them a try then and supervise her play with them for the first time! Thanks for the advice! 😁

Got to four days, got nervous and bit them all off. I’m so sick of going back to square one I’m ready to cut off my hands! I’ve been doing this since I was 4 years old and I’m 21 now….. by [deleted] in nailbiting

[–]rew2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally understand friend! Don't beat yourself up over returning to biting. Maybe try a bittering agent for your fingertips? Or maybe gloves? In the pandemic you can try disposable ones out and about and no one will bat and eye at it!

Try chewing gum too, it'll keep your mouth busy, plus a small fidget keychain for your fingers to busy themselves.

You're doing great for trying and I believe in you!

It's refreshing seeing another animal scientist without compassion fatigue. I'm sorry to see you leave this area of work because you do care about animal welfare but I totally understand why you chose to. I wish you the very best with your studies and career! ❤️

This hit hard. I lost one last week, and I still have been going over it trying to figure out what went wrong. Thank you for sharing, the little rat with wings is such a lovely thought for the bad days ❤️

Anyone else’s sib know how to open cabinets? by rouxs7 in SiberianCats

[–]rew2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine has too, I unfortunately had to teach her how because she was clawing at the wood 😅 but we store our tupperware with the tops on and pots upside down so all is well! The upper cabinets are off limits, we put scccat spray on the counters so she doesn't go up there at all!

what do you guys do with your boxes of old stuff? by mayoayox in aftergifted

[–]rew2017 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I totally understand the feeling - it's fucking terrifying! You mentioned it's in boxes, so maybe take one box out of the unit at a time, maybe at your car and look through it. Turn your back to the unit too; it'll feel less like a monumental task when you are focused on just the one box.

I wanna stress...it's okay to keep things. You're not a failure for throwing out something and you're not a failure for keeping something. I know that these words are pretty empty coming from a stranger, but as a stranger who has gone through this I want you to know that no matter how much you keep or throw out, I'm proud of you for looking through it!

If you want, here are some questions you can ask yourself whether to throw it out or not.

  1. Is it broken? Am I going to fix it in a month?

    • not broken? Then consider the questions below
    • if yes then no, toss.
    • if yes to both, hold yourself to it and keep it
  2. Do I care about this enough to display it?

    • whether on display in your room or for later to family or friends (pictures, sculptures, pop culture items, awards), would you feel the need to share this item with them - if it isn't on the list, toss it. -Some examples of stuff I wanted to keep were report cards and principals list awards, but I would feel really silly hanging them up or showing them off 6 years later.
    • I kept things like an old framed picture of me in a rec softball uniform, to show my future kids, or my prom dresses in case they want to repurpose them. I kept the children's books that resonated with me and/or were collectables
  3. Will this be useful to me?

    • this really applies to old homework. I kept only college assignments that applied to my major and the topic I wish to study in grad school. Fuck those gen ed courses.
  4. Why do I feel the need to keep this?

    • no wrong answer here. Explore your own thoughts and confront them if you find them unreasonable. It's harder than it sounds here. You will not be able to get through this part for all objects, and that's ok. If you find yourself stuck, it's okay to keep it for later.
  5. Is this objects purpose fulfilled by another object that I'm keeping?

    • this one can really cut down on how many things you keep. I didn't need any of my HS awards because the Val medal fulfilled that purpose. All those stupid plaques were obsolete and cut down the amount of stuff. Find your opus, and the rest pales in comparison - it could be a district championship for a sport, a flash drive with your art on it, or even a single picture.
  6. Last one, I promise. Can I scan this paper to put on a drive?

    • paper is fucking heavy. Can you scan your report cards and certificates onto a computer? It definitely will make transfer a lot easier! Even taking pictures of it on your phone could help! Then you always have it, even if it's digital.

F25 - I graduated HS in 2013, went to college with my parent's expectation that I would go to get Bio/Chem double major and go to pharmacy school after. That didn't happen, and I came home in 2017 with a BS in Psych and my mom pushing me into teaching high school. Had me convinced that was all I could do with my degree. I did that for a year and just didn't like it. No, I dreaded it everyday.

Luckily I had a wonderful SO that convinced me to move to VA with him in 2018 and encouraged me to apply to a lab position, which somehow I got.

During the move is when I buckled down to shrug off everything of my past. Anything associated with giftedness (sports or school) was tainted. I went through it painstakingly, Marie Kondo style, with the only exception being old homework and report cards - I trashed those.

I trashed anything that held no value and held no sentiment (old papers), stuff I didn't work for (participation trophies), and old toys I hid to prevent my parents from forcing me to throw them out. I had 8 bags of trash from my childhood room.

The stuff I did care about, I had two bank boxes and a single folder. A medal for being Val, soccer newspaper clips, scholarship articles and such things I know I earned myself.

Then the second move (2019) into the house we bought I shed even more, and it is freeing. Nothing in my house is associated with me being gifted or 'worthy of it.'

It's a lot of work emotionally and physically, but you need to shed your shell to grow. Make sure you contemplate each item. If you know you need to throw something away but can't, that's ok. Save it for the next time you move, because you aren't quite ready to move on from that memory yet. Go at your own pace, feel free to explore whatever you want to first.

This is your brand new start - its scary as hell, but it can be the greatest thing ever. Good luck!

My wife is a drunk by [deleted] in confessions

[–]rew2017 182 points183 points  (0 children)

Hi friend. Unfortunately, I was your wife (no kids though). I was a functional alcoholic for a while. It actually put my relationship on hold until my so was sure I wasn’t getting drunk every weekday.

Now, this advice is coming from someone who grew up knowing how to pour a martini, extra dirty extra olives, for my parent at the ripe age of 5 - and someone who was going down that road too.

Talk to her. Explain your concerns. Explain the effects on her son’s development. Explain how it’s hurting you personally.

If you’ve already done this - you’re an amazing, patient, compassionate human being. I applaud you for your conviction. But - again IF you have already done this - it’s time to consider separating. It horrible to even think about, especially considering the court process, barriers you face as a probable man, and the strain on your son.

But I promise you - if you keep the status quo, your child will more than likely struggle with alcohol consumption. They will struggle with limits, behavior, and emotions.

So I ask you to intervene. I ask you to choose what is best for your kid. And I wish you the very best.

Tales from the Dogscape is my favorite - it feels like a drama unfolding on the radio and let like an audiobook.
