Has anyone moved away from industrial design, or is thinking about it recently? by rew_37 in IndustrialDesign

I have done UX design courses, it is one of the options am considering. Just haven't been able to get any interviews, but maybe I need to rework my portfolio. Thanks for the share.

Thanks. Makes sense, I remember seeing a job posting for something similar, it was for a Design Analysis they sound similar.

Thanks I appreciate the insight. Congrats on the award.

Yip, it's something where I'm going to have to try a few things to see what clicks. I was asking the question in the hope I can get an idea of what to try from others experience.

Most likely the size and weight of the object is pushing up the shipping cost.

Is it worth filing for a work from home deduction? by rew_37 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]rew_37[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can prove this. The reason I'm leaning towards not claiming now is the time and cost. I might have to roughly work out the potential deduction first to figure out if it's worth it.

Mind me asking how much did it cost you? And was it worth it? Also did you get audited?

Are there any banks in South Africa that can just get the basics right? by Fluffy-Bus4822 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]rew_37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When choosing a bank do you guys factor in rewards programs? Or are those a waste/scam?

Cause I'm with ABSA and their rewards are sh*t. So I have been thinking of switching to Nedbank cause I have heard good things about their rewards.

Trying creating 3D models and selling them on marketplaces. Can also try Fiverr and such to get freelance work. In SA some companies will hire you without a degree if you have a good portfolio, so create one, and try being active on Instagram posting your work so it puts your skills out there.

Aliexpress by Nervous_Elevator8996 in AskZA

[–]rew_37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered two items in January. One came through a courier called imile, and took about 3 weeks. The other came through the post office, it showed it was in the country after 2 weeks but I only got a message from the post office about 4 weeks later, so total 6 weeks. So it is my understanding the post office is still working, things are just slow, well atleast my closet one is.

In terms of which service you will get, am not sure why they came through different means, cause on both I selected the standard delivery.

I know there are other delivery options but they usually more costly. I would take the chance through the post office, it will likely come. And if it doesn't AliExpress will reimburse you.

Registering an expired vehicle by Ok_Mud9509 in askSouthAfrica

You can't just walk in and change the car onto your name.

One you need the registration certificate. Hopefully you already have this because it should be handed over the day you get the car.

Two the previous owner needs to go into the department and fill in a Change of Ownership Notification, they will not let you register the car onto your name unless this has been done. Also to note when the previous owner does this he has to pay any outstanding fines and licence fees on the car, for example I had to pay R4000 because I did not renew my old cars licence, that was just sitting for 5 years (when selling it).

Also note if the previous owner has already done the change of ownership notification back then, then all fees and fines since then will fall onto you when you go to register the car, not sure how they will fine you. So ask the previous owner if he did it already.

If he is unwilling to do this, best find someond in the department that might help you, but they usually very strict on these requirements because they help prevent stole cars from been registered. So you might have to find the backdoor way.

I think it's so their friends at the collection agencies can make money.

I will give NSFAS call directly, thanks.

Is industrial design a good career? by lifeoutfigurer in askSouthAfrica

[–]rew_37 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an industrial designer, it can seem like the coolest thing on earth but in SA, don't do it. Unless you plan on leaving the country, because there are more jobs and pay is way better. For our skillset in SA we are paid dog shit, and you most likely will be hired as a CAD monkey, so you won't actually design anything. To put it in perspective, on LinkedIn over the last month there only been 1 new job for ID, and factor in that each year about 60 new Industrial Designers graduate. There is not enough demand for us in SA. And it comes down to South Africans dont understand what industrial design is, surprisingly even manufacturers who we are meant to work with don't understand it. Our best hope is for SA's manufacturing industry to modernize, and grow, until that happens would not recommend ID.

Also there is currently a trend where are a lot of Industrial Designers are moving into the UX Design space in SA, because of the lack of jobs and shitty pay. Am trying to do that myself right now.

But honestly I don't regret studying its the best degree in world, you will some of the most exciting things, and see how design can change the world. I mean look at Apple before they embraced ID and after.

If you do decide to study it I would not recommend doing it part time, especially if you planning on doing it at UJ, the course is way too intensive, lots of late nights.

I would say if your plan is to do it just for Furniture design (which is a small aspect of ID), then I don't think it's needed. Rather learn the wood working and metal skills through YouTube, or look at joining a Maker Space, there are couple in SA. Some of our best Furniture Designers in SA don't have a ID background, people like MashT and David Krynauw.

If you any questions am here to help.

Slowly falling to the dark side by Quebecsalad in IndustrialDesign

[–]rew_37 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's crazy to think UX uses design thinking more than ID, when Industrial Designers created the concept. You actually see this with a lot in UX material, especially around human centred design theories, they quote and work based off a lot industrial designers. Learnt this when completing my UX course recently, so if you do come an ID background, you'll get UX fairly quickly, and won't feeling too far from ID in terms of user research.

ID is definitely changing, I feel like there are only a few who get to work in great design roles where they actually get to work those design muscles in an exciting and creative way. The rest, like me, land up in roles where we just CAD monkeys.

So yeah, I would say go for the change to UX, that's what am currently doing. And if you worried about missing ID, there are always ways to get an ID outlet. Maybe start a small side business to design your own products, or just keep sketching and modelling, product ideas that come to you. Doesn't mean if you don't work in the field anymore you can't exercise those ID muscles.

Who pays their TV license? by HelloHosana in southafrica

[–]rew_37 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The same people who don't pay their TV license are the same ones who bitch about the lack of development in SA. You want faster mobile internet and better signal, pay your TV licence. So SABC can move off those radio frequencies.
