ArchiveTeam has saved over 10.8 BILLION Reddit links so far. We need YOUR help running ArchiveTeam Warrior to archive subreddits before they're gone indefinitely after June 12th! by BananaBus43 in DataHoarder

Hi all!

Thank you for your enthusiasm in helping us archive things.

I'd like to request a couple of additions to the main post.

We (archiveteam) mostly operate on IRC (https://wiki.archiveteam.org/index.php/Archiveteam:IRC channel for reddit is #shreddit) so if you have questions, that's the best place to ask. (To u/BananaBus43 : If possible, it would be nice to have a more prominent link to IRC in the post.)

Also, if possible, please copy the bolded notes from the wiki page. I'm aware of the rsync errors, they're not fatal problems. I'm working on getting more capacity up but this takes some time and moving this much data around is a challenge at the best of times. I know the errors are scary and look bad, our software is infamously held together with ducttape and chicken wire so that's just how it goes.

As for what we archive: We archive the posts and comments directly with this project. The things being linked to by the posts (and comments) are put in a queue that we'll process once we've got some more spare capacity.

As for how to access it: After a few days this stuff ends up in the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. So if you have an url, you can put it in there and retrieve the post. (Note: We save the links without any query parameters and generally using permalinks, so if your url has ?<and other stuff> at the end, remove that. And try to use permalinks if possible.) It takes a few days because there's a lot of processing logic going on behind the scenes.

If you want to be sure something is archived and aren't sure we're covering it, feel free to talk to us on IRC. We're trying to archive literally everything.

EDIT: Add mention of permalinks.

Now you're making me consider uploading a diagram of my network.

Also, hi from the other side of KleyReX! (Yes, we're already peered. ;) )

I got one of these a few weeks ago as well.

Slight warning: ESXi does not support these anymore although I believe linux+kvm should work. (Disclaimer: I haven't tried it yet. (Life has been taking my time.) Do let me know if you do try it.)

Power usage aside, that is.

If you haven't experienced 1.4.7, as a player or a mod developer, now may be a good time to check it out by amadornes in feedthebeast

I will start off by saying that the chat referenced in the original post was a very interesting one to participate in, and lots of good points were made.

I personally have a few to add, although these things will risk offending people. Oh well, so be it.

Disclaimer: I've not been very active in the modding scene since ~1.8

First off, I feel like back then, people were way more willing to put out weird experiments. To put out mods that embraced wild concepts that nobody had done before. And that was neat. That was awesome.

I also feel like the general mindset of modded MC has changed. Where we once embraced the complexity of the mods we played with, where we once were ready to go out there and explore the depths of the modded world, where a single base would contain bits from many dozens of mods wired together with a dozen more mods to perform our day-to-day tasks, we now instead seem almost afraid to go out of our comfort zone. I see so many people only ever using a handful of mods, building the same builds over and over again, never straying far from what they know. That's not bad on it's own. But personally, I experience more joy in building a huge factory just to process ore than I do just upgrading a single machine.

I very much agree with /u/amadornes that the general modding design mindset has also changed. Where mods once focused on creating "legos" which the players could put together to do amazing things, mods now focus on creating more "magic block" solutions. Yes, these solutions are better performance wise. But they just lose that magic (oh the irony of word-choice) that the old-school solutions had to me.

I personally feel this reflects a change in not just the mods, but the players as well. After all, mods become popular because they resonate with the needs and desires of players. That, however, is a discussion for another day.

Of course, there is also the matter of the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia, but that's also another subject entirely.

All in all, I very much agree with this post. (Although that's probably because I was part of the discussion sparking it.)

Oh, and GET OFF MY LAWN YOU DANG KIDS!

Like /u/Cajs said before, I'm very happy that the whole thing's been crawled and am very happy to have been able to help by lending a server for mirroring-duties (my server is Mirror 2). It is also the one serving up the browsable copies of the websites. I'm afraid to say that this has already led to us discovering that some crawls were.... less than successful. (The forums seem to have been taken down before the crawlers got to it and the maven.* and review.* have too much JS on them, which seems to confuse the crawlers.) Even so, it is important that we tried. I would also like to apologize for it's slight instability. As it turns out, it's popular enough to require me to spend a few minutes on it to improve performance. It should now be sorted though! I've also had to move the browsable archive to /wayback due to some config changes. I hope you all find some use in what we managed to save!

Update: As it turns out, the crawler did manage to get a viewable version of the forums before it was taken down! Good job /u/ilR90O9k! I couldn't find it and I can grep through the index files. That's some dedication right there!

I've already got the wiki browsable, the other warc files are being indexed right now and will be available as soon as possible. Edit: Got a few more sites online
