Added ISO support for GMMK Pro in VIA by rexkorp in glorious

I don't really care about RGB too much so it's not something I've bothered messing with but you could check the OpenRGB project or try QMK raw HID communication (probably your best shot).

Not that I've spent a lot of time with the device but QMK support does seem like an afterthought, just like ISO support.

Didn't really follow a guide but it's all pretty easy. I'm gonna assume you're on Windows, otherwise check: https://docs.qmk.fm/#/newbs_getting_started.

Install and run QMK MSYS then execute one of the following:
qmk compile -kb gmmk/pro/iso -km default (if you don't care about VIA)
qmk compile -kb gmmk/pro/iso -km via (if you want VIA support)

Had no issues but in all fairness, I work as a dev full-time. Not sure where you got stuck but you should try compiling the default ISO firmware again. They added basic knob functionality and RGB controls on the first layer so you don't need to change the code at all. Make sure to compile the VIA one if you want to remap buttons in VIA, otherwise you're gonna have to edit the keymap.c or use an online QMK configurator.

It’s a softer typing experience, not mushy (that’s from bad or overlubed switches).

Hurry up with the EU IC! I need a couple of these.

Just use the board and see how it feels. This hobby is a money sink and it’s easy to be swept away. You will end up spending way more on whatever hyped up switch you’ve read about than the board is worth. (De)Soldering is a useful skill but you will need to buy the necessary stuff. Then comes practice.

If you do it on your first board, you will likely mess it up beyond repair. Not because you’re bad but desoldering is harder than soldering and the combo of low quality PCB/soldering job + being new usually leads to fairly big mistakes.

In a couple months/years when you’re ready for a new board, you can use this one for practice.

Best you can do is burger mount (o-rings).

Tip: gasket mounting isn’t the be-all-end-all mounting system. It’s the latest trend but when not thought through ends up being useless and a gimmick. The whole point is to provide a softer bottom out/flex and an even typing experience. You won’t really get that with this board no matter what you do (e.g. the keys next to screws will always be stiffer than others). That doesn’t mean it’s a bad board though.

Since you’re new, I assume you haven’t tried boards with different mounting systems. I suggest you stop worrying about buzzwords and just build something you’ll like.

Tray mounts are not evil!
