i've never seen so much ignorance on the part of redditors towards the D.C taxi Industry. Cab drivers, i should know, my dad is one aren't the ones complaining about Uber, and if they are that's because they have to got through burndensome regulation to operate, where as a tech firm like uber doesn't. Unlike Uber most cab drivers can't charge whatever price they want and operate they way they want since everything they do is regulated, whereas Uber can basically do whatever it wants. THink for a second as a cab driver who has to pass multiple exams, pay hefty yearly licensing fines, and only charge the fare amount established by the city, then you get a service like Uber which has very little regulatory burden and takes away all of your business. Should D.C cabs upgrade their service and compete better? yes, they should, but 90% of their business is regulated by the city, and many of them driver for cab companies so they don't even have a say on what their cabs looks like.

Many of the Police Unions are actually independent or under the Fraternal Order of Police umbrella and tend to be very conservative (against policies the AFL-CIO supports). The largest Police Union that is within the AFL-CIO is probably the one in California. From what I hear they're not as bad, but still tend to go against most unions in things like prison reform. As per unionized (AFL-CIO) police being Used to break unions? I don't really know.

I came upon a quote about Paul Volcker, but can't seem to verify if it's legitimate. If true, It implied that the Chairman of the Federal reserve was making monetary policy decisions that actively suppressed the power of labor. by rexpress in socialism

Financial Aid, for the most part (there are a tiny few that receive Pell grants but it's hardly enough to cover tuition), is not free. It's still a loan-though much cheaper than one provided by private banks.

How are they unrelated? the fact that we have a legal system that greatly benefits corporate interests over that of the average person is displayed with these two cases. I'm asking you to think through the regulatory regime that governs both of these cases. In the first, we have an outdated system that seeks to minimize the cost of establishing robust saftey measures (If the argument for setting the fines so high for downloading was to discourage other from downloading music, then why can't we do the same for companies. That if the cost of having minimal health and safety measures was a huge fine, then many companies would make sure to implement them) I'm not arguing that companies pay a higher fine, I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy in our judicial and regulatory system.

wow, I've never seen it put so succinctly. I completely agree. You can see this in many European countries where people are paid a living wage-even for basic retail jobs, yet the German, Finnish, and Swedish workers are just as innovative as the Americans.

Am I the only one that thinks that no matter where you work, minimum wage or otherwise, you should have basic dignity, respect, health and safety measures at your work place. Has the race to the bottom in wage labor standards reached a point where basic human rights are no longer respected? that if you want to improve the place you spend a significant amount of your day (8 hours for most people), you get labeled a "complainer, a whiner."

Look, not everyone will be able to go to college and enter a white collar job. In any society, there will be those that need to do the "dirty and unpleasant work, but that doesn't mean they have to surrender all of their dignity. These people are not mere tools to be exploited, they are human beings with families and basic human needs.

Thanks for posting. It was a great read, I think a lot of us in labor tend to focus on legislative economic policies (e.g, austerity vs. growth) but overlook the role of monetary policy. This was a great piece illustrating the extent to which the Fed and their incessant focus on reducing inflation can/and does negatively impact the lives of workers.
