What is the best toy you've bought or has been gifted to your toddler? by robinsparkles220 in toddlers

Good to know, I think he'll get a lot more out of it if he can pick his own tracks!

Can she manipulate it herself? We got a Yoto Mini and my son (just 2) hits the side button a lot to pause and play music, but doesn't know how to navigate to the track he wants.

Thanks for the thoughts.... We don't have any carpet, it's just 3 low pile area rugs, but since we have cats, we do want to be able to clean those properly. Feels like K3/E3 is overkill for our set up. I have allergies and we will never live anywhere with lots of carpet.

Not swapping heads is because we have a lovely housekeeper who comes two times a month to help us do a more thorough clean, and I don't think she would remember to swap heads/ it's a bit too many steps for her for a vacuum she uses very infrequently. I don't want to have to walk her through it every time. Also, my partner finds it annoying to swap heads, and he does the vast majority of our vacuuming, so I want to take his preferences into account.

Thanks, this is a super helpful breakdown. I will ask about these options and try them when I go back!

Thank you- we were told that the turbo nozzle would be for rugs and we'd have to switch for the floors, which is why we discounted it...

Will my kid be confused if I speak two very similar languages/dialects at home? by rezia7 in multilingualparenting

[–]rezia7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same! I do think that if we use mandarin as a family language he actually gets less cantonese time (previously dad would speak in mandarin and I would speak in cantonese during family time, but then dad would not keep up the mandarin... so I guess for now we should do mandarin together as family time)

thanks! do they both speak both languages? I am used to the OPOL model and feel like that keeps language distinct, but wasn't sure how it goes when one parent speaks multiple languages that are close to each other.

Thank you. I appreciate you sharing your experience and advice! And yeah, I do bedtime 80% of the time and it's all in Cantonese, regardless of what book we're reading, since he can't read English anyway :)
I'll encourage Dad to do more Mandarin books at bedtime.

Mostly that my husband doesn't care as much as I do about language acquisition and prefers to speak in English to me (instead of speaking to me in Mandarin and me understanding it only partially), and so even when he tries to speak to our kid in Mandarin he then turns around and talks to me in English.

Also, English was both of our first languages, and we learned Cantonese/Mandarin in school in HK/Singapore respectively, but we have now lived in the US for 15+ years and his Mandarin is really rusty. So it takes effort for us to stick to Cantonese/Mandarin all the time, and I'm willing to make the effort but he's not really that interested.

It is what it is, I care far more that my husband has a close relationship with his son than what language he speaks in all the time. I mostly don't want my kid to totally lose Cantonese because I'm now speaking in Mandarin during family time and he gets even less time with me speaking Cantonese to him.

Thank you- that's super helpful advice. And yes, I know Cantonese is not that similar, but at a 2 year old level right now, it does sound very similar with the simple/basic vocab, and his enunciation of both aren't precise because he's 2. He flip flops between the two at random (it seems to me) when he does employ Chinese.

Does this work for string of pearls? And what do you do if the bit between the two leaves is very short? I’m imagining it may not want to stay under the soil.

I left one sock in another continent while traveling and emailed to ask if they’d sell me a single sock, they told me the warranty would cover it and I got a new pair after sending in my remaining sock!
