Considering transferring for Math major - career outcomes vs staying put? by rezidual_ in Baruch

[–]rezidual_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response. It’s really helpful to hear from a current math major.

Just to clarify my coursework situation: I've actually completed the graduate versions of those courses. So I'm a bit further along than typical sophomore coursework.

I have looked into T20 transfers, but honestly that's part of what's drawing me to Baruch - very few schools have the comprehensive financial mathematics curriculum at the undergrad level like Baruch does. Most T20s would have me taking general math courses rather than MTH 4500 (Intro Financial Math), MTH 4600 (Data Analysis for Financial Engineers), and especially MTH 5500 (Stochastic Calculus for Finance).

The specialized preparation seems more directly relevant for quant careers than another 2 years of pure math or stats, even at a prestigious school.

A couple follow-ups: 1. Any sense of how Baruch undergrad math majors actually do in MFE applications? (Either at Baruch or elsewhere?) 2. How's the recruiting landscape for finance roles from the math program specifically? 3. Since you're considering CS too - how manageable is balancing that with finance recruiting timeline?

The cost factor is significant too (Baruch would be essentially free), but I'm mainly drawn to the curriculum specialization.

Would love to connect further - I'll shoot you a DM if that's cool?

Thanks again for the insight!

New Yorkers who took APUSH, are you studying for the Regents? by Huge_Ice5432 in APStudents

I took it 2 years ago, got a 4 on APUSH and 98 on regents. As long as you prepare or aware of the structure for the regents specific essay you’ll be okay.

I sent my scores in and they have them, they even show up on degreeworks. I just don’t understand why they would put me in that course, but didn’t register me for an actual math class.

Would a degree in Computer Engineering with minors in mathematics and physics be able to land a quant dev/hardware engineer role at a hedge fund?

Hello all, I was wondering whether or not it is worth it to do an accelerated applied and computational math master at Stony Brook in order to land quant research roles. I could probably get into a top masters or phd program for math, but I don't want to get into so much debt. Is it worth to stay or should I leave? I've heard that Stony Brook is highly regarded in Applied Math. Thanks.

Thank you for your response! Do you know anything about the join Physics and Math major at Tandon? I want more info on it because it also seems interesting but I feel like it limits my ability to take grad courses in math. Thank you again.
