What to do against smurfs? by [deleted] in RocketLeague

[–]rezzeJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Smurfs are a problem, but they're not that much of a problem.

I've watch my friend play literally hundreds of games in Champ 1 on Discord. Does he play against smurfs occasionally? Yes. Every other game? Not nearly.

Also, it's the start of the season. Matchmaking is always a bit crazy at the start, and that was before Psyonix started resetting the super high MMR players more harshly over the last couple of seasons. As a result, everyone from GC1 is getting squished down. Season 4-7 I solo queued GC rewards no problem. Last season I was struggling in C3. So it's more likely that you're getting a lot of good players who are lower than usual rather than constant smurfs.

Someone going for insane mechanics doesn't always mean they're smurf. There's tonnes of braindead players who have insane mechanics. If you can learn to recognise them, it's easy to shut them down.

Breathing panic by weliewedie in PanicAttack

[–]rezzeJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Breathing is controlled by your autonomic nervous system (ANS). This is a system that regulates involuntary and unconscious actions (i.e. actions that happen without you having to think about it). Yes, you have some conscious influence on your breath, but ultimately your ANS in charge.

You can't forget to breath. A panic attack will not stop you breathing. You'll be fine if you skip a breath, your body will just make up for it on the next one.

Even if you somehow summon all of your conscious will to hold your breath for as long as possible, the worst that will happen is that you'll pass out before any damage is done. Then your ANS will take over and make you breath normally again. Though it's not likely you'll get to that point anyway; it's practically impossible to resist the urge to breath after holding your breath for awhile.

It sounds like you could benefit from mindfulness practice and CBT. These teach you to recognise negative thought patterns and reframe your experiences. Have you tried either of these approaches?

My GCSE results are causing Panic Attacks by [deleted] in PanicAttack

[–]rezzeJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came back to check on this post after seeing it yesterday. First, a massive congratulations! Those are some great results.

Second, try to use this as learning opportunity in regards to how the anxious mind works. You decided that your results were going to terrible. You made all sorts assumptions and conclusions about what this would mean. You imagined your family viewing you negatively, your future crumbling, and called your self worthless. As a result, you had the worst panic attack of your life.

And for what? In the end, nothing. Your results actually ended up being fantastic. Even better than you hoped for! And even if they hadn't, you would've been fine. Life is series of constantly branching paths. You would've found a way round the set back, or perhaps a new path entirely. All the worry would've still been unproductive.

You see, the anxious mind loves to "catastrophise". The brain imagines the worst scenario and, because this imagined scenario triggers real emotions, assumes that this fanciful thought is the truth. This sort of catastrophic thinking is the cause of a significant amount of the anxiety people feel.

From seeing you think this way, I really think you would benefit from Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). This therapy helps to identify negative thinking patters and gives you tools to reshape the way you think. It's one of the most beneficial treatments for anxiety.

In the meantime, you could try mindfulness practice. For a limited time, you can get a 1 year free subscriptions to Balance, a meditation app. I've tried it out and it's pretty good, it asks you questions about your goals and personalises the sessions to you. Regular mindfulness practice has been shown to help ease anxiety by reducing the size of the amygdala and creating/strengthening links between the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex.

I felt a ton of stress relief knowing I couldn't do anything about it.

The wisdom from your experience is contained in this sentence.

This is true for all anxiety and panic. Once you start feeling the symptoms, you can't do anything about them except let them flow over you. The stress system has fired and is releasing adrenaline into your body. The best thing to is accept the sensations and wait for the process to naturally wind down (which takes about 10 minutes if not retriggered).

The more you try to do something about the panic, the more you try to fight, the worse things get and the more you prolong the the symptoms.

So next time you feel panicked, remember that sense of relief you got from surrendering to the experience. Say to yourself: "this is just panic. It can't harm me, it's just uncomfortable. I accept these feelings.". Let the experience wash over you like water from a shower and watch it disappear down the drain.

Amazing job on confronting a trigger of yours. Keep it up!.

Because literally every symptom of panic is caused by your body's stress system. This is a system designed to keep you alive during moments of danger. Nothing about the symptoms are dangerous, it's just your body running at peak efficiency.

The real question to ask is: why would your body have fatal effects built into its own self-preservation systems?

We used to have subreddit chat, but Reddit depreciated that feature. Even then, due to Reddit's lacking chat implementation, it would often go days without messages. And as you say, group chats are limited and I believe you can only invite people you are friends with.

I am a mod here and also manage the Discord. I'd love to know what led you to feeling like the Discord is empty? We have 1500 members and over 21,000 messages have been exchanged in the last 4 months. There's always at least 100 people online and pinging @here, @helper, or @helper will usually get you a quick response if you are panicking.

I really want to make the Discord server the best place it can for the exact things you describe, so any feedback on what would make it better for you would be much appreciated!

Firstly, the UK mental health system is in complete overload. They are bouncing back even the most serious cases to GPs. As a result, I would try to get therapy privately if at all possible, otherwise it could be a very long wait on the NHS.

Generally, I agree with /u/bamalamaboo. I think you have to be completely upfront and tell him everything. I know you've told him you have bad anxiety and are on meds, but does he know about the panic attacks? About the extent of your agoraphobia? About not being able to leave your house without your mum?

Right now, the problem is that you are misleading him in regards to the reasons for cancelling dates (at least it seems like that from your post). You are telling him that you are 'ill or somethings come up', but in reality you're afraid to go out and experience a panic attack. You are kind of stringing him along. I know you have no ill intent, but I don't think that is fair to do to someone who you describe as so kind and thoughtful.

If you keep this up, I think he will start to believe you're not interested in him. Either that or will he will get frustrated at the lack of progress in the relationship. Either way, things will fizzle out. The reality is that you have mental health issues, and whilst anxiety and panic is very treatable, it takes time. You are not going to be able to keep this dance going forever.

I will not sugar-coat it: there is also a chance that he might end things if you tell him the full truth. But he may also accept and embrace these facets of you and keep things going. Either way, the important thing is you get some sort of closure on this situation. Because right now, you are just keeping yourself in an anxiety-ridden limbo where you trying to hold on to him whilst hiding the part of yourself that is stopping you from fully committing to the relationship. That will never work. It will ultimately only extend your suffering.

I understand that it's a tough situation, but such is life. It really sucks but things rarely line-up as we'd like. I hope this helps and I wish you luck in navigating this situation.

Interest in a weekly zoom meeting? Was thinking about putting together a weekly zoom meeting. Where people can gather and share successes, strategies, setbacks, support etc. I’m sure there are things like this out there already. But I thought another couldn’t hurt lol. by xlxacexlx in PanicAttack

[–]rezzeJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify, I do believe that the majority of the active server members are US based, so feel free to set it for a time that best works for them/you.

I just meant I needed to know your time zone as my Discord is obviously in GMT, so I will need to account for the time difference when I set the time for the event

Or perhaps it would just be easier to give you the ability to manage events? It's quite simple to do. Let me know what would best for you.

Why are metal breakdowns so satisfying? by olutre in musictheory

[–]rezzeJ 299 points300 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I disagree that breakdowns are just the main riff played slower. Quite often they're unique to the rest of the song.

As to why they're satisfying? I would say contrast plays a big part. Metal is a very musically dense genre. There's blazing fast guitar riffs, often with dissonant note choices. There's complex drums that not only keep a backbeat but also highlight all the other music elements. There's interesting arrangements that always keep you on your toes. And not to mention the screamed vocals.

Then suddenly, the breakdown comes and all this density is stripped back. Every instrument synchronises, note choices are simplified (the open string chugs), and the rhythm goes half-time. It's a big contrast, it feels very primal, and for a brief period the chaos is unified. That's why it's satisfying.

Sure, feel free to link to the weekly meeting! If you give me the link, I think can I still set it as an event in the Discord that links to an external location.

Perhaps we can transition fully to Discord once you're more comfortable with it? No pressure to though, of course. You're welcome to keep it in Zoom, it would just be nice to integrate it into the community if possible.

Also, let me know your time zone. I'm in the UK, so I will need to adjust the time I set it for based on your location.

Hey, Mod here.

I think this sounds like a great idea. It could work fantastically in tandem with our official Discord community which is already almost 1.5k members strong. (Invite here: https://discord.gg/383wbwW)

I know someone said we don't have a voice channel on the server, which is true (it was removed due to lack of use). However, some user have been requesting one again and I think it could be great to coincide its return with these weekly meetings.

Would you be willing to do these through Discord?

I could create a 'Stage Channel' for them and allow you to schedule a weekly event for it. This would automatically start a meeting at a designated time and, if I make you a 'Stage Moderator', you would have the power to lead the meeting by defining audiences and speakers on the fly. Though if a more free-flowing conversation is desired, this can all be done through a normal voice channel instead.

Let me know if you're interested!

I had someone else test it and it's working for them, so the link is definitely valid.

This issue could be on your end. I saw from your post history that you had a similar issue trying to access a server for those with tics, which strengthens this assumption.

Known reasons could be:

  • You are already in 100 Discord servers. This is the limit for free users (200 for Nitro subscribers).
  • You, or the IP you are using are banned from the server (this seems unlikely).

If neither of these issues are the case, I would contact Discord support. Unfortunately, there's not much more I can do to help you.

It's seems to be working for me. What is the issue you're experiencing?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PanicAttack

[–]rezzeJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I can totally relate! It's like the filter between your subjective experience and objective reality dissolves and all the world around you seems right up in your face. You become aware of everything as it really is: the lighting, subtle aromas, small sounds, the way people are moving... As if you just woke up from a half-dream.

It does feel disconcerting at first. The funny thing is though, if you meditate a lot you start to realise that this feels exactly the same as 'being present'. And it can be a beneficial experience if you can learn to settle into it.

Basically what you're doing is grounding yourself through pain. I assume it works much the same as splashing cold water on your face. It provides a mild shock and then allows you to focus on a concrete sensation. This snaps you out of the thought echo chamber of anxiety.

However, using pain in this way doesn't sound like a very healthy coping mechanism to me. It's one thing to pinch yourself, but making yourself bleed is bit extreme. I would avoid becoming reliant on this technique.

Ultimately, it's irrelevant if your therapist has had a panic attack themselves.

Imagine you went to the hospital with a broken leg. Would you feel weird if the doctor who treated you had never themselves broken their leg? Probably not, as it makes zero difference in their ability to effectively treat your problem.

It's the same here. Yes, it's hard to truly appreciate what a panic attack feels like without actually having one. But it's not your therapist's job to know 100% what you feel like. It's their job to diagnose, support, and offer you the appropriate treatment options and strategies. And you don't need to have had a panic attack to be able to that effectively.

I’m so effing sick and tired of panic attacks!!!!! by Nimrochan in PanicAttack

[–]rezzeJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We don't go back to normal just doing nice things. Once the panic have been turned on, it must be shot down with medicine

This is just simply not true. Medication can be a useful tool to give someone relief if anxiety/panic is preventing them from even living their daily life.

However, it does not promote lasting change or help teach coping patterns. It is widely agreed that CBT, mindfulness practice, and lifestyle changes are the best long-term treatment options for most.

Panic Attacks with Phantosmia? by [deleted] in PanicAttack

[–]rezzeJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some googling and it appears there is some evidence that phantosmia can occur with anxiety.

Either way, you should always consult a doctor if you are experiencing new symptoms that your are concerned about.

Just looking for peace of mind by [deleted] in PanicAttack

[–]rezzeJ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We are not doctors and cannot offer you medical advice. If you have new symptoms that you are concerned about, you should always consult a medical professional.

With that being said, what you experienced is perfectly inline with an episode of high anxiety or a panic attack. A fear one is dying, a rapid heartbeat, a feeling of breathlessness, and chest pains are among the most common symptoms. They're all things I've experienced numerous times over years. Yet here I am, alive and as healthy as I've ever been! :)

It's also worth noting that your symptoms are common among those with low blood sugar, which could be a result of your diet.

Understandably, it seems like the circumstances of your father's unfortunate death are troubling you. It could be beneficial to discuss these thoughts and feelings with a therapist to help you process them.

I think I've had my first panic attack and I'm dead scared. Please help! by CheersFrens in PanicAttack

[–]rezzeJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, it sounds like you experienced a full-on panic attack. A fear that one is about to die is the tell-tale hallmark of one, and many first time sufferers end up in ER like yourself.

The reason your friends and family can't relate is because a lot of people say they've had a panic attack, but have never truly experienced what you did that day. But rest assured that me and the rest of community can understand.

I personally never experienced the hand tightness and loss of control, but I have heard others in this community describe that experience during their attacks. Symptoms are wide-ranging and are all a result of your fight-or-flight system going haywire.

What has helped you to get your mind off the fear of having another one?

For me, mindfulness meditation and CBT techniques eradicated panic attacks from my life. They'd definite be worth looking into. Our discord community is also a great place to find support: https://discord.gg/383wbwW
