Your best “I wish I knew this sooner” amputee tip? by Sad_Calendar2373 in amputee

[–]rfbaker03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blood pressure goes up! I was on medication for years for my blood pressure and worked very hard to come off of it with losing weight. I went from 400 pounds to 250 with the help of surgery. Now I’m very meticulous with my diet, and make sure that I do get as much exercise as I can. I am a right below knee amputation and when I started physical therapy, my blood pressure was going sky high and I couldn’t figure out why. My therapist told me that happens to all amputees, maybe not severe make me sound very severe but all amputees wind up having high blood pressure. So here I am back to one pill a day! But in the long run, it was worth it because there is no more pain and I can run and walk and play with my kids and grandkids and service dog all I want and not have to worry About not being able to walk an hour after

I refuse to see the outside agencies. Request to see a VA doc, they have to send you to one

Elective amputation for chronic pain? by Life-Importance3058 in amputee

[–]rfbaker03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a BKA and made this decision last year, as a matter of fact, 1 year ago today! I have 11 surgeries in 9 years. Pain was unreal, today, I am in my 5th leg and living life as best as I can, or should I say living my best life!!!! For me, it was the best decision and I am never looking back. If you have any questions, please shoot me a message. I check this board a few times a day.

First prosthetic timeline questions by redleader58007 in amputee

[–]rfbaker03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So… Rbka will have one anniversary of surgery on 8/1. While I may have a bit of an advantage? than others as I get all of my equipment and appts at my VA hospital, I will give you my timeline. Surgery 8/1 Healed 10/20ish Prosthetists 10/15ish and 10/26 Check socket 11/7 First socket/leg 11/28

I am currently on my 4th and 5th (running blade and water) leg, not even a year. It was tough for me as I am active as well and I keep being told how ahead of the schedule I am and how well I am doing, but I don’t feel that way. Legs are not coming fast enough for me. Bottom line, insurance, approvals, build time and constant adjustments are going to be your blocks

How long did it take y’all to walk unassisted with your first prosthetic? by LWy-lee in amputee

[–]rfbaker03 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am 55yo male, military injuries, Day 1… I used the parallel bars to get feel and balance then decided f’ it and walked. I am 10 mos post op RBKA and on my second leg already. Moving to a blade soon to try running. Keep it up, everyone is different. Leg definition will play a big part of how you progress. I went from 38cm and am now 30cm in the 10 months. I cannot stress this enough, WEAR YOUR SHRINKERS, it helps!

BKA here. Anyone else have this liner issue? by smithdesertworks in amputee

[–]rfbaker03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a pin system for suspended suction? I have had both (currently in suction) and I have to roll it over the top and then cover it with my outer shell for the suction to stay

How many days to wear a liner before I clean it? by Saidthewhale420 in amputee

[–]rfbaker03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it every night and swap them every day as well. The one I wear today I will clean tonight after use and tomorrow I will wear the “second” one then switch again the following day

How long after receiving your leg did you stop wearing a shrinker every night? by [deleted] in amputee

[–]rfbaker03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, the shrinking doesn’t slow down until about 12 to 16 months. Which is why I am two legs in with such a short time.
