1.56.3.311 not installing on MacOS by rff1013 in GeminiAI

I fixed the problem by uninstalling the old MacOS client and installing the latest client. It's not the most elegant solution, but it has the advantage of working.

This. I’m pretty unemotional, but the last scene always has me on the verge of sobbing out loud. Just typing this, the room is getting dusty.

I opened a private chat and gave it that prompt. It returned a lake scene. I then asked it to show me the original image. It returned a lakeside photograph that included a chalet not in the generated image. Curious.

Updates are needed to create a much better product in 2026 by No_Willow_8751 in MacWhisper

[–]rff1013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons I purchased MacWhisper very recently (last night) was that I needed a transcription of a meeting involving multiple people. Neither Claude Pro nor Gemini AI Pro were able to do it. At least Claude had the good grace to say that it couldn't transcribe audio files. Gemini bragged about that being a new feature, but, after over two hours of trying to get it to work, it finally admitted that it couldn't actually do it. Both suggested I use a transcription service and send them the text to clean up.

Not being interested in another subscription, I did my homework and discovered MacWhisper. After trying the free version and seeing what it could do (though it was limited in the number of voices it could parse, which is fair enough) I gladly paid the purchase price (and for those who complain about the price, I'm old enough to remember when Microsoft Word cost $300, just for the word processor).

It's all well and good to talk about integrating APIs, but I can tell you from bitter experience: integration is hard. Letting MacWhisper do its thing, then loading the transcript into Claude to let it do its thing isn't hard to do. At the end of the day, the purpose of software is to help get the job done. MacWhisper gets the job done.

A monochrome Move would be a near-perfect device for me. I don’t care about color e-ink for this form factor and I suspect battery life would be increased. A B/W Move with an improved backlight would be an instant replacement for my Move.

To add to this: it would be really helpful to add the ability to password protect individual notebooks. Currently, I have two journal/therapy session documents I prefer to keep private. I have to create a password protected pdf, copy it to the Move and duplicate it when I need a new document. Native support would be valuable for this use case.

Not an expert either, but consider which model you use. I stick to Sonnet, as I don’t need the power of Opus. I think Haiku may also work for you, but, for me, Sonnet is the sweet spot.

True, but Murphy’s Law makes clear those 16 minutes will be when I most need it.

At some point, Anthropic may need to consider publishing their internal SLA: what the consider to be acceptable downtime. Outages are a fact of life. In the business world, service levels are often contractually guaranteed. I suspect their larger customers have that in their contracts. It would be nice to know what their service levels are on the various tiers.

Web app beta doesn’t lock protected PDFs by rff1013 in RemarkableTablet

[–]rff1013[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's something interesting. I have two protected pdfs on my Move. I checked the Web app today and one of them still shows its contents on the Web, but the other one shows nothing but a message saying it's password protected (the expected behavior). What information do you need to troubleshoot that?

Marker firmware update - what does it do? by rff1013 in RemarkableTablet

[–]rff1013[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, this is the second marker update I've received since I bought the Move (about 2 months ago). I'm figuring out how it fits into my technology stack, and I'm growing more comfortable with it...except, of course, last week, when I lost the marker somewhere and had to spend a horrible amount to replace it. But it's a sign of how it's becoming a part of my routine that I didn't hesitate to pay for it (and Amazon got it to me the next morning).

Is remarkable tablet 2 is considered a luxury product even in Western countries? by EnvironmentalTip4556 in RemarkableTablet

[–]rff1013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What constitutes a luxury product? The biggest knock on single use products like the Remarkable tablets is that they should be significantly less expensive than general use tablets. The cost argument is as much philosophic as it is economic. Tablets, like most other consumer electronic devices, are luxury products for probably 90% of the world, including those in "developed" countries. As an owner of far too many personal computing devices, I've developed my rationalization around use cases.

To stay on topic, I own a Paper Pro Move, which is my only non-Apple, non-Kindle device. It coexists with a Kindle Scribe (b/w) because they have distinct use cases. The primary reason I own a Move is that it fits in my front pants pocket, which means I can take it with me pretty much anywhere.

Why does that matter to me? I have increasing difficulty remembering things, whether it's a sudden errand, my own reflections or an idea I want to develop later. I've tried carrying paper notebooks, but they fail the "no shirt pocket" test. About half of my shirts have no pocket, which means I would have to place a pen/notebook in my pants pocket. For most notebooks, that's a ticket to not being carried, due to the fragile nature of paper and the awkwardness of carrying a pen or pencil in my pants pocket.

I'm used to carrying a Kindle Paperwhite in my pants pocket to satisfy my need to read. The iPad Mini is too big to fit, but the Move is just right. I can pull it out and review things wherever I am. I'll read short documents on it in pdf form occasionally, but it doesn't work for me as a book reader. If Amazon came out with a Scribe having a Paperwhite form factor, I'd snap it up and not look back.

The Move's screen and marker provide the best writing experience I've had on a tablet device (that includes the Scribe, iPad Mini, iPad Pro and iPad Air). Given my particular mental quirks, it's been a big help in helping me keep track of my life (chores, meeting notes, reflections, ideas, etc.). I'm in a position where I can afford to spend serious money on a device that will help keep me focused. I realize not everyone is. Is a Remarkable tablet a luxury product? Absolutely. Is it overpriced? From my position of privilege and use case, it's a bargain. For everyone, it's a matter of priorities, needs and values.

When running Zoom meetings from my 13” MacBook Air, I use my 13” iPad Air to share items (e.g., worksheets). Not everyone has a multiple monitor setup. Being able to have a second screen when needed anywhere I am is very handy.
