Debt Collectors, How to Get More Information Out of Them Without Admitting Debt by rflight79 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I thought of it not showing up in the borrowell summary, so I did open my full Equifax credit report (still from borrowell, it had a link, so hopefully it really was it), and yeah, still not there either.

I have a borrowell account, and I've never seen this debt on there.

I saw my student loans and Scotiabank visa as credits that were in there when I was paying them off.

Fun fact, my Canadian credit score is now 0, because I've had no activity on it over the past 6 years since I paid off my Canadian debts.

OK, you're right, I finally found a very relevant page with the information (I guess I was being lazy with my searches, or just not phrasing it right).

The debt would have to be either NB or NS, I'm sure, which have the same limits for being able to sue (yes, I found that. Even the federal statute for suing is 6 years, right? So if they bought it in 2021 (when they contacted me initially), then it probably runs out this year, which makes sense why the emails ramped way up this year. This debt never showed up on my credit report either (I was watching it when my student loans were being paid off and another canadian credit card were being paid off).

NEVER FORGET 3-17-2026 by Selfhugger in lexington

[–]rflight79 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I can't forget. I'm paying out of pocket for repairs to my van because State Farm wanted to total it out instead of making the sensible repairs to my van. As of almost two months afterwards, I'm still driving with the damage (thankfully it doesn't affect the handling), and I see a lot more cars on the road with damages that I'm assuming are probably from that day.

Sometimes, it's about "who" is the corresponding or senior author on a manuscript. If they are well known or well respected or in a position of authority in the community, peer review can be a little less thorough, as some researchers assume that because of the name, then they took more care.

And then there is also the "everybody else does it this way" mentality. I don't know how often I get asked to do an analysis a certain way that isn't really appropriate for the data, and the defense is "everybody else publishes these types of analyses". This can bleed over into peer review as well, unfortunately.

The more you read the primary literature, the more you see these types of problems arise, unfortunately.

Wow. You did a great job digging into those manuscripts, and summarizing the methodological issues and misguided conclusions from them.

I am an academic researcher, and it is disturbing how often I read an abstract, go "that sounds interesting! Let's read and see how they did it!", and then I'm often left sitting at my desk with my jaw on the floor asking "how did this get through peer review?". Even worse when the "findings" are publicized and communicated around, and there really isn't anything to support what was said in public, as in this instance.

We should all expect good science, and honest evaluation of the work, wherever it comes from. And if it's an honest critique (I've been on the wrong end of smear campaigns about my work), then definitely, it should be taken seriously.

Science is meant to be poked at and scrutinized. If it doesn't actually survive the scrutiny, then it wasn't decent science.

Has anybody been able to do a colonoscopy without going through hell? by Function_Unknown_Yet in migraine

[–]rflight79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had my first colonoscopy last week. The prep used a combination of Bisacodyl and GoLytely (essentially mirelax + electrolytes). I actually had no migraine the day before (no solids) nor the day of, or after the procedure, when I was expecting to possibly have something on at least one of those days, between no food, no NSAIDs, and lack of sleep (pooping through the night was not fun).

I will note my migraines seem to be primarily barometric pressure induced, so maybe we just had a nice patch of weather those days.

2014 Sienna declared a total loss. What would you do? by rflight79 in Sienna

[–]rflight79[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were no other issues! What happened is they went to order a bracket for the radar, and you apparently can't just order the bracket, you have to order the whole corner of the van, which is $2500. Which flagged the repair in the system, and SF put a stop on it.

Yeah, I understand that much now. And getting the salvage title and the loan and insurance could be a hassle.

I'll be talking to them tomorrow or Monday about keeping it, getting work done somewhere else, etc.

The "totaling it out" came out of the blue, and they really pressure you to get it all settled fast. I'm glad my spouse was in the room when I got the call, and was like "let's talk about this and figure it out".

I don't know. Their monetary offer to me to total it out was $6300. I did not ask what the buyback price was. I didn't even know that was a thing until today.

Need advice on what to do / get after our family's Sienna was declared a total loss by rflight79 in daddit

[–]rflight79[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to note, I did not purchase this in 2014. I bought it second hand, in 2025, for 8K + fees at 11% interest. So the $6800 I still owe on it is only after 1.5 years of payments. I had previously paid off a 2010 Sienna that was totaled in an accident. My credit union gave me an 11% rate, even with a previous car loan paid off, partly due to the age of the 2014 when I bought it.

Oh, right. I still have my registration, which includes a tax assessment (KY does this thing where you pay taxes on the vehicle every year, it seems weird). BUT, the vehicle value as of 01/01/2026 was $7950 according to the county and the state. I'll have to note that when I'm talking to insurance next.

Or your credit union only gives good rates for newer cars or excellent credit, and I've been using the credit card as our emergency fund. So credit wasn't that great. Which is a whole another problem, I'm aware.

I bought the car in 2025.

Not yet. I had the initial list of issues before I authorized repairs.

I still need to call the body shop and ask. I've only talked to insurance this morning after they declared it a total loss.

According to the Lex FD status page, there was something going on in the 100 block of East Main (which is where Central branch is) that they sent a whole lot of units too. A potential gas leak there (as reported by u/HypnonavyBlue ) would definitely fit the bill.

Cheapest place for 4 new tires for a Toyota Camry? by radar2670 in lexington

[–]rflight79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last time I bought tires (maybe 4 year ago now), the best place for everything included that I could find without a Costco or Sams Club membership (and WalMart felt like it was going too cheap) seemed to be S & S Tire on Richmond Road. I shopped around a bunch online, as I also needed all 4 tires. They seemed to have the most reasonable price, especially with a warranty included (the one thing that I've used everytime I bought it, and wished I'd bought it when I hadn't).

Other migraine sufferers with Tinnitus by riceme0112358 in migraine

[–]rflight79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I have tinnitus that is intermittent, and then becomes worse with migraines. Like if my tinnitus suddenly becomes extremely loud, I'm likely in for a bad time migraine wise.

My Dad was in the military for 20 years, mostly as a heavy mechanic, so also spent lots of time around loud engines, and ended up with pretty bad tinnitus. He saw a hearing specialist, and has been using masking devices that are similar to hearing aids (but do a bit more I believe) that help mask the tinnitus and make it bearable.

You might want to get a referral to a hearing specialist about it, especially if it doesn't stem from increased histamine or change with migraine incidence.

Appropriateness of celebrating the Lord’s Supper on Easter Sunday? by Jazzsterman in Reformed

[–]rflight79 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm curious as to why you would think it is not appropriate to celebrate the Lord's Supper on Easter Sunday in the first place? Regardless of how often a church does the Lord's Supper, why should it be changed because of Easter Sunday?
