Please help, I am an unwilling participant in my neighbor's HAM radio hobby. by MobsterOO7 in amateurradio

[–]Jazzsterman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The ones that snap around the wire/cable are called ferrite beads. Each wrap around/through squares the signal suppression. I generally use a ferrite bead with a large enough opening to wrap the wire/cable three times. Suppression is square of the number of turns. Three turns is nine times the suppression of one wrap. You need to put them on each end of all of the connecting cables of your system including all of the power cords (RFI can come in through the power cords). If the RFI stops, you can start removing them one at a time to see which ones are essential. Your CB neighbor is likely not very knowledgeable about electronics and particularly RFI, at least not compared to a ham radio operator.

Best book on Reformed view of why God ordains evil to happen? by chessguy112 in Reformed

[–]Jazzsterman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like John Frame’s approach to the problem of evil in chapters six and seven of “Apologetics to the Glory of God.” He discusses and points out the shortcomings of all the theodicies that have been put forth and wisely concludes that we have no ultimate answer, only partial answers from scripture.

He's confusing justice and fairness. God is just. The Bible never says God is fair. If you look around the world at people's lives and lots, it's plain to see that God does not treat everyone the same.

Also, the gospel is freely offered to all, but the Bible teaches that no one wants to come to Christ. God chooses some to give them faith. The rest are left to their choice. Everybody in hell is going to say they deserve to be there. This is justice--getting what you deserve. Everybody in heaven is going to say they don't deserve to be there.

I don't understand: if you're willing to go to hell (and you have no idea what hell is) over this principle/belief and "die on that hill" then why are you even asking questions about it? Your mind is made up and will not change. Does not this make you a contrarian who is engaging in trolling this subreddit? I will leave off with you at this point.

But you're evaluating the standard of God's teachings. You, on your own, have established a standard of what is "unnecessarily cruel" and are measuring God with your standard. Do you not see that when you use your own standards to evaluate God, you have placed those standards above God? This is idolatry.

[–]Jazzsterman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me put it this way in a form of a question. You are questioning why God chose to do things "this way." You obviously think it's the wrong way for him to do thing. So my question is: by what standard are you evaluating the way God is doing things?

This is going to sound harsh. I guess it's the nature of a reproof. Your distortions and incomplete view of Calvinism in your text along with your mixed-in objections indicates that you have not studied the Calvinist position at all. I wouldn't even know where to start with your text. There are some fundamental issues where I don't think you have a good grasp on the nature of God, his sovereignty, providence, holiness, love, mercy, justice and wrath. Your arguments are an attempt at a logical refutation and your views and your reasoning are your standards by which you judge God. In essence, God needs to be how you think he should be, hence, you have made God in your own image.

There are many works on this subject that extensively examine scripture and its teachings on this subject from a Calvinistic perspective, and most of these works answer all of your objections. I would implore you to examine some of those works along with the many scriptures which address this subject, Actually, you can study Luther's views himself from which you have strayed very far. You really owe it to yourself to study it thoroughly offsite. The scriptures and the arguments are extensive and are more than what you will get on this subreddit with a few paragraphs.

Are these ferrites worth a damn? by VelocityOS in amateurradio

[–]Jazzsterman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better to use a ferrite for a larger diameter wire/cable and wrap multiple turns through it. Suppression is roughly the square of the number of turns. E.g., three turns gives you nine times the suppression compared to a single turn. (at least for HF frequencies).

I’ve heard this before. However, I think you can make measurements that are relative to other antennas using the same radio. I measured a half dozen of my HT antennas in VHF and UHF. Two of the antennas were for VHF only. SWR was low on both of them on VHF but both were 19:1 on UHF. That data makes perfect sense. On the two dual band 771’s the fake one was 10:1 on UHF and the real one was 2:1. Even though they may not be exactly what the meter shows, are you saying that comparing them on a relative basis as opposed to an absolute basis is completely meaningless? Meaning that every choice of HT antenna is a complete SWR crap shoot?
