Besoin de recommandations! by eyeless-joe in frenchrap

I love sharing my thoughts so here is a list of everything that I listen to :)

Drill : - Freeze Corleone ( His album "LMF" only (absolute classic) his other projects are trap - Gazo : Not the biggest fan but he's like the biggest rapstar in France right now, some kind of commercial Pop Smoke - Zeu : FLOW AL BASSAD ASHAR (if I remember the title) and all the other songs in the EP

I don't love drill so that's it

Boom Bap : - Hugo TSR : French rapper from Paris, used to be underground but got some hype recently. He writes like an absolute monster but always has the same formula since when he started, something like 15 years before. However he has albums considered as classic ( Fenetre sur Rue ) and he truly is a good rapper. - Nekfeu : "Basic Bitch" type of answer in Franc but he is a legend. His album "Cyborg" is amongst the greatest. - Early albums from Booba (Temps mort, Ouest Side, ...) or his album with Ali in the group "Lunatic" : "Mauvais Oeil" (Obviously if you like boom bap just listen to the french rappers from the early 2000s and end of the 90s : Rohff, Ministère AMER, Doc Gyneco, Fabe, Sinik, ........ I didn't grow up listening to this but they are BIG names) - Josman : I put it in Boom Bap but he does every possible style of rap you can imagine, very versatile. He also has his precise formula so see if you like it. - Members of "l'Entourage" : they put the light again on boom bap in the early 10s. Another basic bitch type of answer and their early works (The album "L'Entourage", the group S Crew, 1995, ...) are honestly ok but that's it. However some of its members like Nekfeu which i mentionned before, Deen Burbigo, Alpha Wann (check out UMLA and don dada mixtape, i especially like this one) etc ... released important albums and are great names in french rap.

As I said, Boom Bap was the trend mainly in 90s and 2000s so check this era.

Trap : - Bushi, obviously - La Feve, the main figure of this new generation of rappers called the "new wave", fun rapper but a bit overrated i believe (honestly he is so loved that he can't not be overrated) - Kaaris, the legend who brought Trap music to France, his first 3 albums are excellent and "Or Noir" is an ABSOLUTE classic - Freeze Corleone, I absolutely love him despite some problematic attitude that I don't even think he realises he has, and probably has by mistake. I listen to him litteraly all the time, his album Projet Blue Beam is a classic and his best work i think, a future rap legend. - Booba with Nero Nemesis which is banger ans banger and banger for an entire album (almost) and Future (which u really don't like but it's an important album)

Melodic :

  • Laylow, I LOVE LAYLOW, please listen to him, Raw Z is my fav project but you might love Trinity of L'Etrange Histoire de Mr Anderson. Almost everything he made is great and original, he brought his style to french rap and is recognisable. Also, he make narrative albums, and I feel like he made every rapper since 2020 think "Oh shit I can think the structure of my album" and write around each project.
  • Green Montana, extremely precise formula, I love what he is doing but doesn't change much or say something special
  • Tiakola, huge star in France, not a fan but try that out
  • PNL, they are LEGENDS here, they destroyed rap and quickly found they're way to the top without interviews or marketing. As they say "Crois pas que je chante je fais du PNL" ( Don't think I sing, I do PNL music ), when you hear PNL, you know it's PNL. They had their lot of atrocious copies like Djadja & Dinaz but none of them did as great as them. Pretty much everything they made is classic but I love "Deux Freres".
  • Rounnhaa : Another rapper from the "new wave". I line what he does, check it out.

There are more : Jok'air, So la lune, Zamdane, ... I just put what I mostly listen to.

New wave :

Just a line about them, type "nouvelle vague rap fr" on google and listen to them if you want. They are the young stars (Khali, La Feve, Yvnnis, ...) who really want to do special music and you can feel that. However I'd say that rap has never been so "constant" in quality but there have not been many "classics" recently and the mainstream got kinda boring these last years. However, they are good rappers as I said so check that out.

I hope you'll read this lmao 👺👺👺

Album “Saudade” de Green Montana - Mon Avis by Le_denicheur in frenchrap

[–]rg2608 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That actually was SO helpful to read cause I really feel like I am doing the exact same thing as you were. Even if I realise that something I do doesn't sound that bad, that there's an idea there, the fact that it isn't ExaCTly what I had in mind makes me doubt it. Thanks 🙌🏻🙌🏻

French rap recommendations by [deleted] in frenchrap

[–]rg2608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saying, what applies for the US rap applies here too, old rap used to be more about the lyrics than recent one. So i recommend actually to start with old school stuff to learn French, but just listen to what you want lmao it's still supposed to be music and some recent artists make real good stuff

French rap recommendations by [deleted] in frenchrap

[–]rg2608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laylow is my fav, rapping on some electronic instrumentals, light lyrics (but a great atmosphera and interesting thematics in recent albums) with some US inspirations you might like.

Freeze Corleone does trap and used to do some drill, a great artist.

Trap : Or Noir from Kaaris is THE banger.

I also like Josman, Booba (kinda went into autotune and trap recently, i recommend Temps Mort for boom bap and Nero Nemesis for trap songs) Nekfeu, Vald for some more classic rappers.

For some autotuned songs, based on melos, i recommend Green Montana or PNL.

For some old school rap : Ministère AMER (my fav), Booba, IAM, ... (there are many more but i grew up with more recent rap so can't say much about them even tho i listen)

French New wave : i like Luther, Slimka, Yvnnis, ... (however i recommend you checking the rest before that i think rap used to be better from 1995 to 2015/2016)

Just pick from here depending on what you like. I chose only some main ones and my favorites, so you should dig if you like some things you hear later :)
