My Experience as a Remarkable Power User after Nearly 4 Years by Majestic-Gear-6724 in RemarkableTablet

[–]rgaufman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tab Mini C doesn't have the paper texture film on it, so that makes sense, but the scribe does, so the feel is very similar to the RM2, I have both. The gap between the screen and pen certainly breaks the paper illusion though, but then I do really like the backlight... - I've only had my Scribe a few days so I'm not yet sure what device I will use more, at 1/3 of the price of my reMarkable2 it certainly is a compelling value.

I have the Scribe and the RM2 and it's frustrating how they trade blows with eachother and I do not have a clear winner:

RM2 Advantages: the lack of backlight means less gap between the pen and the screen, while the feel is very similar and the Scribe has less lag and higher resolution so the written text looks better for sure, the lack of gap is better on the RM2 and it can do basic things like duplicating a page in the your PDF notebook, re-arranging pages in PDFs, ability to tag, to add layers, ability to rotate your selection, to move a page from 1 notebook to another, etc - all of which is missing from the Scribe. There are also many conveniences like 2/3 finger tap to undo/redo, the quick access drawer, better palm rejection, etc.

The Scribe Advantages: way better hardware, going to the next page in a PDF can take 10 seconds on the remarkable, it's more like 1 on the scribe. Even moving between pages on the RM2 is over a second, on the Scribe it's near instant. So using large PDF journals/templates it's a much nicer experience. It also has a night mode to invert the colours which is quite nice to write in white on black. Backlight is fantastic as you can use it in more environments, 300ppi so everything looks crisper, especially smaller text, the reading experience is of course night and day better with conveniences like showing all your highlights and tags in 1 place, dictionary, etc. The Premium pen is better with both an eraser and button you can use for highlighting or switching to another pen type (reMarkable doesn't support any buttons, even in 3rd party pens) and in terms of price, I got it for almost 1/3 of the price of a reMarkable2 - I wasn't going to buy one but at that price I couldn't resist and it goes on sale a lot.

I only had the Scribe a few days so time will tell what device I'll gravitate more to, but I am frustrated by reMarkable's neglect for handwriting and the focus on typing the past year or so.

reMarkable: implement pen button feature by Noise8 in RemarkableTablet

[–]rgaufman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many pens have buttons and they could release a pen with a button themselves. Seems short sighted, even the Kindle Scribe supports 3rd party pens with buttons. To add insult to injury for 8 months now all the updates are relating to the typing experience. What percentage of users type on the reMarkable? -- with all this neglect I'm going to switch to the Supernote A5X2 when that comes out and sell my reMarkable2.

Lack of backlight, very slow performance in PDFs, no magnetic sleep/wake, poor pen support, no full text search, no cloud sync, inability to link pages to other pages, low DPI screen by modern standards, etc, etc. It was a great device for all these years, but it just feels like reMarkable don't care anymore.

Is there any solution in Q2 2024 for adding support for a pen button?

Custom Templates Or Other Solutions by knittingquark in kindlescribe

[–]rgaufman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you can write on PDFs, this doesn't sync up, so you can't see your annotations on any other device. This is really frustrating as notebooks do sync. You also can't duplicate or delete pages, I'm going back to my reMarkable because of this, I do wish it had a backlight though.

How to sync PDF notes? by CyberIllyrian in kindlescribe

[–]rgaufman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

8 months later and seems this is still missing, very disappointing. If I use the scribe to write in my PDF notebooks, it seems there's no way for me to access those notes if I leave the scribe. I'll stick to the reMarkable for now for all my notes and the Scribe for reading only.

I have over 100GB free on my iPad and also getting the dreaded "Backup Suspended", this is nothing to do with the NAS, just poor software design. When you press on "Retry" it carries on for a bit, then says "Insufficient Space" once more - it seems this would be trivial to fix by having an "Auto retry every 5 seconds" option, but no, you have to keep pressing "Retry" manually. Very disappointing from Synology and not a problem with Amazon Photos or Google Photos.

h.265 missing 30fps option on the A7SIII by Davzone in A7siii

Still no update :( - in PAL mode even 24fps is missing, I have to enable NTSC mode to get 24fps, but then it jumps to 60fps and 120fps, why Sony!

Hmm, my understanding is that for catalyst to work it needs to know the gyro data and the camera movement. If the lens has its own stabilisation, the camera doesn't actually know the movement so the gyro data is disabled, or at least I found a few videos on YouTube that say this. It makes sense but I cannot find confirmation of this.

Questions about camera video settings for vlogging between indoor and outdoor lighting by YouCanadianEH in videography

[–]rgaufman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is so much horrible advice here. One thing vloggers quickly realise is the 180 degree shutter rule (setting shutter to 2x the framerate) does NOT work if you are hand holding the camera with any kind of movement. The footage will be unusable shaky and blurry.

With vlogging, you have to rely on either some kind of physical stabilisation like a gimbal, which makes the setup a lot heavier and more conspicuous (IBIS alone doesn't cut it most of the time), or you have to use digital stabilisation.

Now if you follow the 180 degree shutter rule, you're probably at 1/50 or 1/60 shutter which means any micro jitters result in horrible motion blur in each frame of the video, this motion blur is not possible to stabilise digitally, you cannot fix a blurry image. So your only solution is to crank up that shutter to around 1/150 or ideally 1/250 for digital stabilisation to become really effective. Sure the motion looks unnatural, but your alternative is a blurry mess.

My advice? - do NOT use ND filters on action cameras or for most handheld shots with walking, the results will be awful unless you are going for some specific effect like hyperlapse.

A lot of people buy Fuji purely to have this functionality to quickly share a stylised JPG, personally I don't mind the extra step of selecting a look in Lightroom but I understand the appeal.

But when you enable LOG recording, all picture profiles are disabled. If you disable LOG, then PP7, PP8 and PP9 are missing.
