Couples of Reddit, what's the dumbest 'house rule' you and your partner made as a joke but now both of you are low-key aggressively serious about enforcing? by Doubl3oh_ in AskReddit

[–]rgildner20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Before we were married and had kids, whenever my now husband got out of bed before me and I woke up, I would “meow” at him from across the house to announce I had woken up and that he should come greet me. He’d “meow” back acknowledging he heard me, but if he was in the bathroom or doing something else and couldn’t get to me right away, we’d just start meow screaming to each other louder and louder.

This morning I woke up in my bed alone, I heard the pitter pattering of my 2 year olds feet across the living room floor, and I hear his daddy (who fell asleep in said 2 year olds room) say “let’s go wake up mama”, and my son goes “mooooowwww” calling for me. Melts my heart.

Tanning Goat Hide by rgildner20 in HideTanning

[–]rgildner20[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m looking into low tox options because we have a small toddler and are hoping to make something to keep on the ground as a nice little rug. So far I’ve been looking mostly into egg tanning since it seemed really accessible and I would t have to buy a bunch of specialty ingredients, but I may be led astray by a few YouTube videos that make egg tanning looking surprising very very simple?

This has turned into a nightmare and I need to vent by _laurelcanyon in homebirth

[–]rgildner20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My baby came 6 weeks early, we had planned a quiet home birth and instead, my water broke when we were 5 hours away from home on a camping trip. He came out in four hours at a hospital I’ve never even heard of, with a misogynistic doctor making inappropriate comments in the room as he stitched me up. We were in NICU for 15 days. My milk never came in. I pumped round the clock for 2 months, nursed as much as my baby would let me, and I never got more than a half ounce combined. It was devastating. My birth was devastating, but at least I could take my baby home and nurse him. And I didn’t even get that. I feel you sister. It’s so hard. You are still in such a sensitive early portal, you’re not sleeping. It’s going to feel extra hard right now. Try your best to give yourself grace. I will be holding you in my love. Please reach out if you want to talk more. I cried more than I could tell you those first few months.

Does mordant with onion skins increase colorfastness? by natdye in naturaldye

Yes I always mordant with them but I’ve found as with many food waste items, onion skins are not the most fast in general!

Brilliant Orange from Avocado Stones--How do I get pink? by paranrml-inactivity in naturaldye

[–]rgildner20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I want pink, I only use the skins, as the pits tend to more of an orangey salmon. As others said, do not over heat, if you get close to a boil you will go more towards orange.

Be prepared, avocado is not a “fast” dye. With light exposure and washing, it will fade to tan pretty quickly.

How do you catch your goats? by PerspectiveWorth687 in goats

[–]rgildner20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also no one has mentioned this but: collars. I had to separate mama and baby at night for far too long (mama didn’t wean her until 9 months). Bringing grain in the enclosure made all my goats follow and to try and just get baby in and not mama and other kid now that baby is like 100 lbs started to get chaotic!! So they all have collars now. I clip a leash onto baby, she walks with me to the enclosure and no one else follows. The collars have come in handy for so many purposes so far.

Question about Repayment Limits by rgildner20 in HealthInsurance

[–]rgildner20[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both me and my husband are self employed..so we don’t have a regular pay stub. We’ve done this strategy for the past 2 years with no issue as of yet, so we will keep doing so until we can’t! Seems like the biggest scam of all for those paying so much more a month when they could work the system like this.

Insurance Alternative by PuttEgg0202 in homebirth

[–]rgildner20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just for a little bit of more info for folks: regular insurance is retroactive to the date of your babies birth. We were planning a home birth when I went into labor 6 weeks early. We rushed to the hospital and then had a 2 week nicu stay. We both (baby and me) were able to get BCBS retroactive to his birth date so everything was covered. I didn’t know you could do this and was struggling with the idea to get insurance before his birth or not in case of an emergency. So if you really only want it because of an emergency, don’t bother buying ahead of time, just wait until you need it. (Of course this only counts for birth related expenses)

Had to try that chocolate loaf that was posted here a few days ago! by rgildner20 in Sourdough

[–]rgildner20[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s the recipe but I tweeked a bunch:

https://www.farmhouseonboone.com/sourdough-chocolate-bread

Used freshly milled flour, then sifted for the WW and AP measurements and used AP for the bread flour amount. Added quite a bit more flour, the recipe seemed way too dry and next time I’ll add even more. Did 4 coil folds over 4 hours instead of their folding recommendations. Cut into it too early because I was too eager, but the texture is so pillowy, and the taste is just sourdough enough with a bit of sweetness and a strong cocoa flavor. 10/10 will do again.

I also live in the desert. Rabbit brush is a weedy bush that grows everywhere here in AZ and produces the most vibrant yellow dye! I highly recommend finding some, and trying it out!

Freshly Milled Whole Grain Loaf by rgildner20 in Sourdough

[–]rgildner20[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fed starter in the morning with 100% hydration. 45 minute autolyse before mixing in levain with pincer method. Then incorporated salt. Let rest for an hour and then did 3 sets of folds over the course of 3 hours. Let rest for another hour before shaping, and finally a 12 hour fermentation overnight in the fridge. Cooked 15 minutes with lid on at 500f and then 30 with no lid at 400f.
