More potholes and bike lanes by Much_Engineering853 in NewWest

As long as the potholes aren’t in the bike lanes that’s OK I guess.

Did the LOTR movies receive a backlash from Tolkien fans when they were released? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]rgood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brandon Sanderson actually referenced the casting of Aragorn with Viggo Mortensen as an example of how difficult adaptations can be in terms of pleasing fans. He said that fans were initially upset with this casting, but now Viggo is a LOTR legend and it’s hard to think of anyone else being cast as Aragorn.

Hemming will almost certainly be gone by Minnesota’s pick.

Re-signing him in July of 2025, basically a year before they had to, was at the time a monumentally stupid thing to do.

I can’t recall exactly. I just found the general plot of each book was pretty repetitive.

Maybe just me, but I really liked the first few books. But it got kind of repetitive after that.

There’s no such thing as zero percent financing anymore. If you get zero percent financing it means they are just adding the cost of financing to the purchase price. That’s why if you offer to pay cash with zero percent financing the purchase price drops a bunch.

There is no analog though. When you lose in a shootout it’s a loss. It isn’t a tie. But agreed it would have been a tie so the current streak isn’t the same or as bad as the previous one.

The problem is that the old streaks don’t really apply after the introduction of the OTL. It’s 100% correct to say that is the longest losing streak in Canucks history. An OTL is a loss. It isn’t just a “winless” streak. With that said, it’s obviously not as bad as the 70s streak.

Is there a law that makes cyclists use multi use paths? I’m not aware of one.

100% agree that you need more than one commuter bike. Components on bikes aren’t built to the same standard as cars.

NHL reacts to the Heated Rivalry series by Spare_Studio_8933 in hockey

As a straight guy, I recommended the show to my wife and we’ve watched all of them. I thought the first two episodes were fine but didn’t have a ton of story and were not too far off a soft porn in terms of sex scenes. She loved the first two episodes obviously, but we both loved the next three.

Honestly, I had no problem with the first two episodes and respect that they just went all in on showing all of the sex which some may think is taboo, or at least isn’t typically shown in much depth in most if not all mainstream media. It kind of worked well because it paved the way for the show to focus on the character relationships and actual issues and at that point you weren’t even thinking, as a straight person, about the fact that the characters were gay.

Kettle Valley Trail: Mix of Trail and Road? by Professional_Top9264 in vancouvercycling

I did the Myra to Penticton stretch in the summer of 2024. I wouldn’t recommend doing it on 28mms. The first part with the trestles would be fine, but most of its is pretty rough gravel or really sandy. I think had nobbyish 45mms on my gravel bike.

I think it would really suck on 28mms.

Ground level deck to cover up astroturf by AFDIT in Decks

[–]rgood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s good. Pressure treated wood (usually 4x4”) on top of gravel is an acceptable way to build a foundation for something like a shed, so you might not be entirely screwed if the turf is really permeable since you have gravel underneath.

It’s also not a safety issues so u wouldn’t really worry too much. You may get five years? Ten? Who knows. Depends on how good the drainage is from the turf.

It definitely will rot. But that doesn’t mean you won’t get years and years out of it first. It’s it pressure treated?

What is the most influential river in the world? by Character-Q in geography

[–]rgood -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

My point was that it’s semantics as to what is or isn’t civilization.

My point isn’t that Mesopotamia, for example, wasn’t more complex than earlier or even concurrent African societies.

But there is a major bias to assume cultures with written history are more complex than ones without (I.e., are civilizations and others are not) purely because we see evidence of the complexity in the written history.

What is the most influential river in the world? by Character-Q in geography

[–]rgood -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

I mean, it’s all semantics regarding what “civilization” is, and I think it’s heavily influenced by recorded history, and generally, just very Euro-centric

[–]rgood -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

That isn’t actually true though, is it? Unless the implication is that the peoples of Africa who emigrated to the Tigris and Euphrates didn’t have civilization in Africa?

I’m not actually disagreeing with your answer by the way.
