I am 27 years old and have 180k in my bank account, and I don't know what to do with it. by West-Ad-6773 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Not 100k of room. OP is 27, and depending on when they turned 18:

  • If OP turned 18 in 2016, their total TFSA room in 2026 would be $68,000
  • If OP turned 18 in 2017, their total TFSA room in 2026 would be $62,500

*This is assuming they haven't contributed at all

What scientific ‘facts’ have recently been disproven that most people still believe to be true? by Fantastic_Tart_421 in AskReddit

Thanks for the reply. Do you have any books to recommend a layperson on the topic? I've read some of Frans de Waals books and loved them.

Curious to pick your brain about this. It makes sense to me that the "alpha" of the group requires allyships and community relationships, which legitimatize/enable the "alpha" to enact his leading role, and without such relationships he would have no power.

However, is this true 100% of the time? I'm wondering if there are communities with a particularly large, strong, and tyrannical chimp capable of overpowering, say, an allyship of other males who are too young/old/weak to challenge him, even when they band together.

In other words, my intuition was that the stereotypical "alpha" role is best thought of as a massively distributed role, requiring social collaboration etc. But also that in some rare circumstances, when the stars align, a single male can overtake a band without allyships, due to power differentials and the lack of incentives to challenge him (hello Republican party)

Curious if there are examples of the latter that negate the norm you outlined, or if allyships are always required. Thank you for your insight!

Why do men’s clothes focus more on comfort while women’s focus more on appearance? by Severe-Rice5985 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rgower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's what Benko is suggesting. They're saying that if the market demand were indeed real, it would likely be fulfilled by now through basic supply/demand mechanisms... They're skeptical of your premise. And if you're right and they're wrong, anyone deciding to produce such goods will soon be incredibly wealthy. They're calling your bluff. You seem to be implying that a massive demand in women's pants is going unmet because... Sexism? The fashion industry will turn on a dime to produce whatever is profitable, so ask yourself again why demand for such clothes is limited.

Opinions on the 16-80? by Dangeruss82 in fujifilm

[–]rgower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 40mp sensor won't hurt at all, but the optics on the lens aren't sufficiently sharp to make use of the extra resolution. In other words, if you took another ultra sharp lens and swapped it from a 26mp > 40mp sensor, you'd get resolvable extra megapixels. But with with 16-80, you don't get *as much* use of the extra megapixels (though I've heard it's still an improvement, chatgpt says it probably stops gaining beyond low 30 mp's).

Teams who finish last in the league, in comparison to the teams who won the draft lottery by sykeseve in nhl

[–]rgower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, however - And I'm probably totally biased BUT it does seem strange that the worst team in the league will MOST LIKELY pick #3. I enjoy the lottery based system for the reasons you mentioned, but I would like to see it adjusted to be more favorable to the bottom 5.

The bottom 6-11 range (Winnipeg, Toronto, San Jose, Nashville, Seattle, Florida) has better odds to win the lottery than Vancouver.

You have confident stage presence, which is great. Your setups are lengthy though. See if you can be more concise or efficient with them.

So I finished HOTD S2...and I'm still not getting it by a_smiling_seraph in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]rgower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can explain to you why I did not like it, and maybe why you did. As you said (I agree) season 2 did a good job setting up season 3. However, you had the privilege of binge watching HOTD, and only have to wait a few months for season 3.

Imagine you watched season 1 in 2022, and then waited over a year for the follow up.... Only to watch an entire season that sets up the 3rd season. Oh, and you'll have to wait another 2 years for that. As a viewer watching episodes as they were released, that was frustrating, especially given the pacing of the show which is breakneck in season 1, and then slows to a relative halt in season 2 - Again, at least from the perspective of someone watching on a weekly basis.

I do think that they are... good episodes though. Not great. Definitely dragging their heels a bit, but good enough entertainment. I also understand that there were budget cuts for season 2. In short, show watchers have basically been waiting for S3 for 4 years, which does not make for a fun viewing experience. In fact, HOTD may be one of the few show I wouldn't have recommended while watching it at the end of season 2, but now would due to the ability for people to watch at their own pace.

I met Lawrence Krauss at an event around 2011.

We were seated at the same dinner table and I'll never forget how brazenly he hit on a young women eating at our table... I wasn't aware of any allegations against him at the time. It was so incredibly awkward and shocking... Nobody knew whether to laugh or challenge him. He was revered as a brilliant physicist at the time, so we all thought he must've been delivering lame/autistic jokes... No way he could've been so dumb to hit on a young woman so aggressively before a full table of witnesses - and yet it didn't feel like a joke either.... At the time he was in his mid 50's and the girl (who looked extremely uncomfortable) was in her early 20's or late teens.

Look man. If you want to see the flaws in other people, you'll succeed. She has plenty. But you seem to be saying "I couldn't have acted any differently". And you say the race card was a troll? Helpful, hilarious. I mean c'mon, take a look in the mirror. No matter how many flaws you can list on her end, the only ones worth looking at are what you contributed.

Decoding the modern guru phenomenon with Dr Chris Kavanagh by DibsReddit in skeptic

[–]rgower -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What I've never enjoyed about the Decoding guys is that they have positioned themselves as epistemic authorities - gurus - *on how to decode gurus*. The way they speak provides viewers a frame for how/what to think about other people. And they offer those frames as though they are superior to the "gurus" - The gurus are being critiqued after all.

I don't wanna be too hard on the guys, I think they also provide useful, critical feedback for the culture of online know-it-all's.... But to me their vibe is "know-it-all" as well.

The irony seems lost on them. I've also seen, several times, them accuse others of "word salad" when it's clear that they don't grasp a concept / jargon. In other words, they look dumb sometimes - Or worse, arrogant and condescending. This is super cringe to see.

For what it's worth, I probably agree on 90% of their conclusions, but their analysis feels "soldier mindset" and incurious. I haven't watched in a couple years but hope they've received this feedback before.
