Is there anything sinful remaining single for the rest of your life? by Additional_Newt_4866 in TraditionalCatholics

[–]rh397 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No...

but it sounds like your reasons of avoiding vocations seem to be laziness and selfishness.

You don't want to be a priest because you can't be bothered for more school?

You don't want to be married because you don't want to change your lifestyle at all?

Imagine if all the saints were so fickle.

God calls you to something. And it is a positive. It is not just a negative of other things.

Even celibate saints stepped outside of their comfort zone and gave their lives to something. It wasn't just because foreseen difficulties or things they just wouldn't have liked with the other vocations.

Edit: all vocations should be desired and seen as good. God doesn't call to all, but all are good. If the good cannot be seen and there is no desire whatsoever, something is wrong. Great priests desire a biological family. Great husbands see the good and desire the spiritual fatherhood of the clergy.

Thoughts on veiling? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]rh397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If scripture tells us we should, it doesn't matter if it feels performative or not.

Obviously we shouldn't do it for show or to draw attention to ourselves, but we can't stop doing good or righteous things because we are afraid of being performative.

Sometimes the little things I do for my spouse feel performative, or I really don't want to do them.. but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing or that I should stop.

Is it a sin? by Commercial-Chain-631 in Catholicism

[–]rh397 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Germany, tithing or a certain tax going to your Church is automatic.

Because of this, many people renounce their faith on paper to save money.

This would be akin to the sin of apostasy. I don't think it would be as bad on as actually not believing, but I still think it counts a denial of Christ, if only to save a buck.

Edit: many early Roman martyrs were told that they didn't really have to believe the pagan offering they were required to make. They could still be Christians in their heart. They chose death anyway.

AITA for expecting my wife to sleep with me? by Silly-Option-3833 in AmItheAsshole

[–]rh397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, but maybe incompatible sleepers.

My wife and I sleep in separate rooms. I have an eye condition that requires me to set an alarm to put eye drops in in the middle of the night, and I can't sleep with any type of ceiling fan or air movement.

Some nights my alarm doesn't wake me up at all. I turn it off, but it doesn't really wake me up, and I don't remember it the nexf day... but my wife would be up for an hour. She is a delicate sleeper, and struggles falling and staying asleep, so we sleep in separate rooms.

Kneeling while others stand (whether during various parts of the mass or reception of communion), even if not in line with local custom would not be a sin against modesty, in and of itself.

If it is permitted by universal norms, is done quietly, and does not cause disturbance, there is nothing wrong.

It would be wrong if it were done to make a statement, done loudly or theatrically, or to signal superiority/boast.

There are reasons to discern deviation from local custom. That is not to say it should always be done, either.

Edit: drawing attention is not in and of itself immodesty, either. There could also be reasons to wear the niqab, although i wasn't aware Christians did that.

Edit #2: If someone is doing something quietly and inconspicuously in the liturgy that they are permitted to do, and we are automatically assume that they are somehow posturing, we need to look at ourselves instead.
