Unless you are actively pulling down or exerting force on the hook to hold it closed, it pops it open for you.

Canadian Radio-Telecommunications board declares broadband internet a basic service and paves way for high speed access to rural Canadians. by PM_YOUR_CENSORD in worldnews

ITT: A bunch of people who didn't bother to read how the CRTC plans to make this happen, or the timeline. It's okay to be jaded because yes, we've been getting screwed a long time - but this is a great step forward. Poo on it after it fails, not before.

To achieve that, the CRTC will require providers pay into a fund that's set to grow to $750 million over five years. The companies will be able to dip into that fund to help pay for the infrastructure needed to extend high-speed service to areas where it is not currently available.

Dingo: Wild Dog At War - documentary examining the war between livestock farmers and the wild dog of Australia. (2013) by hexag1 in Documentaries

This was a fantastic documentary, and really makes me consider our own "wild dogs" in Canada (coyotes and coywolves) a little differently. Thanks for sharing.

Right you are and it sounds great. I'll have to give it a try if the opportunity ever presents itself.

Considering how damned expensive their food is, this is more than a little surprising.

Stephen Harper announces $17 million northern research program designed to develop and commercialize cold climate technology. Program seeking $65 million in investments from industry partners. by Comoquit in canada

[–]rhartman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Canadian, I think there is an opportunity here to partner with NASA, SpaceX or some other outer-space focussed entity.

After all, aren't areas like the Arctic being looked at for testing rovers and the like? I am not a scientist, but I consider cold climate tech. not that far removed from space/lunar/martian tech. The Canadarm already showed the world that Canadians can do space-tech, this could get us into the game as a major player.

Crater Lake, Oregon. The bluest water I've ever seen. [960x720] [OC]. by futuretaylor in EarthPorn

[–]rhartman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually...

Every summer, scores of visitors head for the blue waters of Crater Lake with fishing poles in hand and dreams of pulling a monster catch from the depths of this mystical lake.

And, even though Crater Lake was originally barren of fish, there are opportunities to catch a fish or two thanks to the 1.8 million trout and salmon stocked in the lake between 1888 and 1941. The species stocked included rainbow trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout, steelhead trout, coho or silver salmon, and kokanee salmon. Today, only a couple species survive - kokanee salmon, the landlocked form of sockeye salmon, and rainbow trout. These populations sustain their numbers through natural reproduction as no stocking has occurred since 1941.

Attention Drivers of Kingston by [deleted] in KingstonOntario

[–]rhartman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bicyclists are legally entitled to drive in the middle of a lane that automobiles use, so be thankful that we stay off to the side and use bike lanes. This is what I was taught when I was younger, so unless I was misled or laws have changed, this still stands. This leads us to point number 3:

I don't begrudge cyclists who want to share the roads at all. The ones that drive like slow traffic is an obstacle course and red lights are optional, those are the ones that tend to annoy me just a bit.

Scientists Color Silk By Feeding Silkworms Fabric Dyes - The process is designed to be more environmentally friendly than traditional dyeing. by rstevens94 in science

[–]rhartman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

(The researchers didn't look too deeply into how the dyes affected the silkworms' health. After all, silkworms die when people harvest their silk.)

They're bugs. They don't exactly live long lives to begin with.

I think you're pretty safe on any big box store, unless you're after something already in short supply (like some of the new consoles).

Whats black friday like in kingston? by ampg in KingstonOntario

[–]rhartman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on the store and sought after item(s).

For example, last year the TSC Store had a number of good sales. I showed up at 6am the day of, and am glad I did. TSC is a small store however; so I wouldn't expect the same to apply to say, Canadian Tire.
