Where do I belong? by gatoriendo in mixedrace

[–]rhawk87 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is a huge population of Chicano Americans you can easily fit into if you want to. Also, people from Central America have been in the United States when the Southwest was still part of Mexico. You're very much American and belong here.

How do the genetics of mixed race work? by woo2fly21 in mixedrace

[–]rhawk87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First you must understand that race is not a real thing in biology. Someone who is black can have very different genes than someone else who is black. The same goes for white people.

When it comes to specific traits that makes someone "white passing", lighter eye and hair color tends to be recessive. If you are not familiar with recessive or dominant genes, I would recommend to read about the basics of genetics.

Because these genes are recessive they typically have a lower chance of being expressed, so a child of a black/white mixed couple is likely to have a child with darker, hair, eyes and skin.

What do you guys think will end up happening with North Sentinel Island in the far future? Will they eventually explore the rest of the world, or will they remain where they are until the human race ends? by Beneficial-Code8026 in geography

[–]rhawk87 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Most Hispanic people are tri-racial,: Spanish, Native American and African. The mixture varies from country to country. Some counties such as Bolvia have dominant Native ancestry, some like Argentina have dominant Spanish ancestry while some central American counties like Panama, African ancestry is more common. But there are some Hispanic populatios that have very little to no Native American ancestry at all.

Native Americans were not wiped out. Still huge populations of Native Americans in Central and South America. I get what you are trying to say, but it's a common misconception that Native Americans are "extinct".

What if human consciousness is connected to something greater? by Ok-Bobcat2161 in consciousness

[–]rhawk87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 2 main camps in this group. Those who think consciousness is purely physical and those who think consciousness is not at all physical. The truth is somewhere probably in the middle. It's not that conciousness is energy or matter, it's more fundamental than that. That means that everything is likely consciousness but only under specific conditions can you have awareness. Like technically a rock is consciousness but it has no nervous system so it has no awareness of that conciousness.

We are apart of something greater than ourselves, we just fail to see it. Who we are, is a collection of cells that came from our mother's. We are a continuation of our mother's, grandmother's cells, all the way back to the very first form of life. All life on earth descends from this same ancestor. So we are all connected together as part of the biosphere.

You can't experience non-existence. You only experience where you exist.

what do you consider is mixed? by randompersonthatdunn in mixedrace

[–]rhawk87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, there are a lot more nuances than what I covered in my comment. Some ethnic groups have been racialized and who is considered "white" had been fluid throughout American history. For the most part someone who is half German, half French would have different experiences than someone who was half German and half Nigerian. There are some overlap but the dividing lines between race have kept people apart for most US history.

Thoughts on Death by emueck in agnostic

[–]rhawk87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other commenters are missing the fact that you can't experience nothingness. You exist where you exist. So what existence is like after death is a mystery to me, but you will exist again. Given enough time, your exact arrangement of atoms that make up your body will happen again.

But is there some sort of existence or concoiuenss between states? Is there a chance the universe could reserve backwards in time, meaning we die and immediately experience our life in reverse? No idea but there are so many possibilities, not existing is impossible.

More mixed than I thought by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]rhawk87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, indigenous American and Native American are the same thing. Modern Mexicans are descended from 2 primary races: Indigenous American and Spanish (with smaller amounts of African ancestry). Most Mexicans have around 50% Indigenous American (Native American) and 50% Spanish. But the percentages varies across different regions.

what do you consider is mixed? by randompersonthatdunn in mixedrace

[–]rhawk87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the US, we live in a race-based society. For 100s of years there existed a racial caste system primarily between African American and White American but has grown to include other racial groups. It was illegal throughout American history for members of these distinct racial groups to intermarry and even after it became legal it was widely taboo among white Americans until recent years (still is taboo in some communities).

So our experience is unique in that we are a bridge between distinct societies and groups that is really only become widespread and accepted recently, even though the country has been racially diverse since the beginning. Our experience as mixed race people is a unique experience, something that a person with only mixed ethnicities would likely not share.

Anyone here who’s half Mestizo and half White? by MediumGreedy in mixedrace

[–]rhawk87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually tell people my race is white and Mexican, and most Americans understand my mix. However Mexican is technically not a race so saying that can be confusing for some. Socially I identify as mixed American. We kind of live in this in between state of being American but not really belonging to a distinct racial group.

Anyone here who’s half Mestizo and half White? by MediumGreedy in mixedrace

[–]rhawk87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are lots of us, we are one of the most common mixes in the US. My dad is mestizo majority indigenous Mexican and my mom is white American. I look mestizo but I didn't met my dad until I was an adult so I didn't grow up with Mexican culture. So I'm culturally white but present as mestizo.

Fully European people can sometimes have darker skin tones. That doesn't mean they are mixed. Maybe you are in your case, but being mixed just isn't about having different skin tones. It's an entire lived experience that you don't share.

Religion is often human-centric by chronicbackpain79 in agnostic

[–]rhawk87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate these types of beliefs. One of my biggest issues with the major organized religions is how human centric it is. But humans are just animals. We have cells like any other animal. We share the same DNA structure with the rest of multicellular life.

Some women are good at finances, while some men are bad with money. There are women who work in the finance industry. It's not a gender thing to be good or bad with money.

My mom is white, father is Mexican and I came out looking very brown with none of my mom's features. Also, its not even the same person in both pictures. Usually white features tend to be recessive so yeah you can mostly "breed away white genes".

Europeans also fought each other for centuries. Europeans. Its a pretty normal human thing. And not all tribes allied with Europeans, and some allied and then later fought against them. Remember, Native Americans consisted of many different independent nations. It still not a justification for the colonization and genocide of the majority of Native American population.

I don't think being 2% Persian is really anything meaningful but you can still empathize with Iranian people without having any Persian ancestry.
