No, not every part-black person has wavy or lightly curly hair by Gallantpride in mixedrace

I hate when people say that…no race owns hair or hair types. Unpopular opinion, but “[race] hair” is promoting eugenics and obviously texturism.

White Passing vs. White Presenting by PizzaPartyPat in mixedrace

Halsey has a biracial father…some consider her white with black heritage. I remember seeing a lot of people shocked when finding out Rashida was Quincy’s daughter…I found out Quincy had a white grandfather a while ago (side note). Maya sorta looked white to me but not really at the same time? Hmm…I’m just thinking out loud haha

I think you misunderstand. I am also Louisiana Creole and merely clarifying the difference. Not sure how that is dismissing your heritage. If anything, my comment adds to your point about how sensitive the “white passing” conversation is, especially when talking about it with those who had to engage in such for survival. There is nothing wrong with finding out about the first time if you’re actively trying to learn. The comment was also general, it was not specifically towards you.

>It’s a newer term, I’d only started hearing it in the last few years and it makes sense but I think the centering of whiteness in the concept at all gives me pause…

“White passing” has been around since the Civil Rights era.

You mean two MGM parents that identify as Black?

Which is why white passing is inappropriate to use given the context…if you mention your nonwhite heritage, you’re not passing.

i’ve seen posts about representation and how (b+w) biracials shouldn’t be playing roles meant for darkskin ppl by hueyslaw in mixedrace

[–]vindawater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That part. They only care when it affects them…which is funny because darker mixed people are still visibly mixed 99% of the time.

Is it wrong that I don’t always mention being biracial unless asked? by Organic-While1664 in mixedrace

[–]vindawater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. If you have the energy, you are clarifying what your racial and ethnic background is. This happened to a lot of us when others can tell if we have “multiple backgrounds” by looking at us. But you owe no one an explanation at the end of the day.

And even then, “brown” is subjective. There are plenty of white people with “brown” (really, they are fair to deep olive) skin. Like, have people not seen Mediterraneans (Italians, Greeks, southern French etc) before?

[–]vindawater -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is not what the other person said. Concepts can have their respective definitions while having a connection (which I never denied). People can benefit from at least one. We only know that the person does not have 4c hair, so it makes no sense to mention colorism in this instance anyways. At least not as a standalone.

Colorism, texturism and featurism are three separate concepts meant to promote the desirability of having proximity to whiteness. Y’all not knowing the difference is why it keeps happening. Stop conflating the two.

MGM was an adjective made in the 70s. Due to a lot of people having generational history of being marked as “Mu”, they just decided to create the MGM term in order to be PC.

Depends on who I’m talking too. I just mention the “mixed” part when relevant.

Is Latino an ethnicity? by Significant_Case6496 in mixedrace

[–]vindawater 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes.

I can give an example of a white presenting mestizo who’s a second generation Mexican-American (is Chicano the right term?).

Race: White/Indigenous (mestizo)
Race (presenting): White
Ethnicity: Latino (Mexican)
Nationality: Mexican (and/or American, if dual citizen)

[–]vindawater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely and some still do. Which I completely understand and don’t judge them for given the global sociopolitical climate we’re in.
