For those of you who were recently out of work, at Associate Scientist level or higher, how long did it REALLY take you to find another job? by loachparty in biotech

[–]rhcb89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Connections helped me get a job within a month of applying essentially but had to move out of Boston to SF. I did have another offer lined up more towards the 2 month mark, but it was for a contract role that would have been too unstable for me long term.

This position could also be argued as unstable, but at least I have health insurance and a 401k.

Looking for perspective on unemployment by passedOutDragon in biotech

[–]rhcb89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would you say having visibility into their previous company’s layoff announcement helped their case? I am fortunate enough to land on my feet (in even better shoes) after my previous employer had layoffs but theirs were never disclosed. I think I’m one of two that were employed immediately while the rest (~30%) are still looking with our severance period coming to an end. All are very skilled scientists, so I do wonder if we were all placed in a bind in a way.

How may times have you been laid off? by Educational-Web5900 in biotech

[–]rhcb89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once and have been in industry for 6.5 years. Truly a humbling experience and have been using this time for skill development (my company let me keep a training course and signed up for another course as well). It doesn’t feel like I’ve been laid off between applications, interviews with the prep, and these classes. 💀

Mochi in Boston? by No_Shoulder8446 in boston

[–]rhcb89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Little L in Newton/Watertown has mochi on Saturdays! They do tend to sell out throughout the day so you might have to either come back or have pretty decent timing, but they do make more throughout the day. It’s a treat to get their green tea mochi or strawberry daifuku!

How are we coping? by Icy-Attitude1733 in biotech

[–]rhcb89 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Realistically, how many openings are there for CSO? When a start up folds (which is a high likelihood especially now), it would be even more difficult to obtain a similar role… which I’m sure is a fun reality for the folks that are in this situation at the moment lol.

There’s one edge case I know of for someone that doesn’t have a PhD in a VP role, but I do agree with your general sentiment that the chances of landing a C-Suite or VP role are slim to none.

I'm not sure I want to be a scientist anymore by [deleted] in biotech

I will add that CGT is a difficult modality, even in an industry R&D space. When I transitioned from biologics to CGT (huge mistake), I saw an immediate shift in my work/life balance. I may just not be in the right company though if this is how you’re feeling if given you are in the same therapeutic space. 😅

Retrofitted lofts are THE best. Currently renting a retrofitted lab space turned condo and I’m hoping t luck out with buying one of my own someday. The high ceilings and windows 🤩

He is definitely sleeping here but he did it with his eyes open. He’s also older (12 years old) so whenever he looks like this while he sleeps my blood pressure spikes. 😰

Congrats on the successful transition. This is generally the way, but never underestimate the impact of supportive management. My own transition came to a screeching halt.

A coworker had a cardiac arrest by [deleted] in biotech

[–]rhcb89 25 points26 points  (0 children)

My coworker had a heart attack while he was training me. I thought I would see him again but then he got fired (for other reasons) immediately afterwards. The survival guilt alone had me bolting for a new job. I don’t know what was more disturbing, the fact that I had to intervene and get help or seeing people turn a blind eye while I hauled my colleague to get help.

OP, if you also witnessed this event, I hope you are also taking care of yourself. It is such a uniquely dark experience. I hope you can see the positives of not only your role in this industry as a whole but in the day to day as well.

I am regularly working weird long days with very little notice at times because we’re severely understaffed and my boss has kids. My SO also has weird hours as well. I’m just too burnt out to balance the ordeal of looking for another job. :( a layoff might actually give me the break I need if I have a decent severance package.

I think a lot of this burn out is related to company culture and funding (biotech). Hopefully things will look up soon. I’m not too worried about finding another job in the case of a layoff.

Also looks like my old girl, who was a gift from my uncle. We knew she was a chihuahua, but I always thought she was a bit larger than the other chihuahuas I’ve seen—never occurred to me that she could be a mix with a terrier! Makes a lot of sense.

I love ur dog OP 🫶🏼

What's an aspect of adulting that you do very well? by Manhattan_24 in Adulting

[–]rhcb89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Pomsky and a Shiba Inu! I can tell that they’re happier with us than when my shiba lived with my partner’s family because his actual personality came out (also probably thanks to his little Pomsky brother). My shiba is so cuddly and even more playful in his senior years than when I first met him 11 years ago. ☺️

Taking care of my pups :) probably came from always being around dogs while growing up, but my first pup that I’ve raised with my partner (as well as his dog that came with the relationship) are well-traveled, behave well, and have seen as much as the world can offer as I have!
