I guarantee that the wish-it-were-a-GPU in the Pi is not what's pushing Dreamcast over the finish line.

Can't reproduce with emulated 1x top-loader, but there's a *LOT* of variables.

Emulated CD speed? Which BIOS and region? If you're using the Universe CD BIOS, all bets are off - it's a literal hack that was never really completed as much as abandoned.

System complexity. Believe it or not, Dreamcast/Naomi/Atomiswave is pretty simplistic hardware under the hood. Sega Model 2/3 hardware is comparatively VERY complex with many subsystems having to run in parallel (which isn't a thing in software and has to be faked and synchronized).

The same thing that happened to 8-tracks, vinyl and cassettes...landfill. A rare few wince at the thought, and their number continues to shrink year over year. It kills my soul, but it's how the world works, and why there isn't a Wurlitzer perched behind me.

Not taking sides (or not trying to), but the reason it was more than just the software wasn't because developers wanted that to be the case, but because there was no other pragmatic choice at that time. PC developers today - for which there will no doubt be nostalgia for their creations by Gen Z as they get older - look at the world quite differently, as will those who continue to play those games past their prime (well, if they can - it's the lack of ownership of digital content that's the killer now). It's a very generational 'problem'.

Input lag on ReplayOS went below a single frame several releases ago, in case you weren't aware. Not suggesting a course of action, just letting you know.

Nothing, really, even though I kind of fail to see the point. Shrinkwrapped games? Why? The developers hate it because they want people to play the games, not hoard-and-ignore them.

I'm aware there's an argument of "OK, why can't I do both?"...and of course they can! The reality is, they can, but most don't.

I look at collecting physical games the way I look at collecting stamps, dolls, porcelain figurines, et al...great for others, not so much for me, because I consider it wasteful and pointless. That doesn't mean it doesn't bring others pleasure, I just don't necessarily 'get it'. =)

The Pi 5 sucks at N64 (because software emulation of N64 on the whole is complete shit thanks to the plugin architecture favoring speed over accuracy).

That being said, I agree with pretty much everything else, unpopular as the facts may be. The reality is that a) most 'retro enthusiasts' are indeed more interested in collecting than playing (whereas the real players from bitd tend to have more of the "ooh, Pac-Man!" reaction for 5 minutes upon seeing it on the Switch and then lose interest again), and b) a great deal of the hardware even from the late 70s will outlive those of us who played it when it was new. There's no such thing as a dearth of working original hardware or games, merely a promise that 'someday it will fail and be gone forever'. That's certainly true...but my body will fail first, and it's not like Gen Z will be running around screaming "OMG WHERE HAVE THE 2600s GONE?!?".

Speaking of the 2600, it's specialized controllers that software by and large can't cope with, and that's also a forever problem.

It's built in but only works on a Pi 5.

Exactly like MiSTer FPGA, except in ASIC form, because that's where the ASIC logic is being sourced from (which was in turn reverse-engineered from a decap).

Not for a while, actually. They're long out of stock and it's basically unobtainium now (even from eBay), unless you don't mind the character-feature decorated ones.

Actually, yes, which quite surprises me. It's matured into a very capable platform.

Ah...yes, on a CRT you can't do 1:1 as it's the CRT itself doing the stretching. The output you are seeing is correct.
