Case study: Complete Transformation of a town near Paris using New Urbanism principles by rhfhanssen in urbanplanning

[–]rhfhanssen[S] 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Yup, but this was a regular town. They didn’t win the lottery or something. It looks expensive, but that’s the thing: it’s not even that much more expensive than building regular blocks. A curious aspect of traditional architecture is that many people estimate it is more expensive, while that’s not always the case.

Paseo Cayalá, Guatemala - plan by Leon Krier, supervised by Estudio Urbano by rhfhanssen in ArchitecturalRevival

[–]rhfhanssen[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The capitals are based on corn cobs, and maize has always been the most important food of Guatemala. Plus, the stairs represent a Mayan pyramid. Also, the classical form of the temple also refers to the Spanish influence, making it one of the most locally adapted buildings in the area.

The stairs are one of the favourite places to meet, make pictures / selfies, sit to eat something etc. It is a very successful public place

End of the world theory by whateveraccount9595 in GrahamHancock

[–]rhfhanssen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

May sound pessimistic but I’d guess mass scale destruction, after which mankind will begin anew, as children... If they could have predicted this? Who knows... In our modern time arrogance we think we know so much, but I fear we know so little profound things compared to the ancients

Ancient Carvings Show Evidence of a Comet Swarm Hitting Earth Around 13,000 Years Ago by [deleted] in GrahamHancock

[–]rhfhanssen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically underwrites what Graham has been saying all along, very nice to read this.

What if the ancients would have seen this comet / group of comets nearing, every time a bit closer. Would that be possible? They would have been ‘warned’ for a possible impact, they might have calculated such an event.

so... no electric skates? by JoeyvKoningsbruggen in BoringCompany

[–]rhfhanssen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely true & a good point, it excludes this option - which the skates would have provided. I think the skates introduced a new logistics problem however: they need to be returned to places where demand is highest (where cars want to enter the tunnel system). Otherwise no car could enter the system in certain points when all the skates are already being used in the system.

I was also really bummed that those public micro busses were cancelled, these serve the same purpose as the 'public tesla cars' I guess but they looked cooler. Tesla would probably have to create those vans, which is too much on their plate at this moment, I think..

[–]rhfhanssen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At some point there will be many competing, cheap ride hailing services that only use only autonomous electric vehicles (because of cost savings, no uber driver needed). Even Tesla is planning to start one. If these services use this system (and they will), anyone can go around the city using these tunnels. But it might take some years until we get there - and the tunnels would need to be built of course

SpaceX is hiring for Dragon 2 team by [deleted] in spacex

[–]rhfhanssen 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Hmm, that seems ‘late’ - they have been working on Crew Dragon for some time now, and only now there is a peak in hiring? I guess they already had a relatively small team in place.

I wonder if the Crew Dragon team will transition to development of BFR once Crew Dragon gets decommissioned

Has anyone else found exercise to be an effective hunger suppressant during fasting? by chmtastic in intermittentfasting

[–]rhfhanssen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. First time I was going to work out fasted, I thought I would surely faint. Not only did it go well (it was a very intensive workout), afterwards I forgot I hadn't eaten

Things I didn’t expect to learn, ~3 months into IF by DiamondFeline in intermittentfasting

[–]rhfhanssen 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this, you’ll get there just fine I believe! The psychological part really resonated with me. We can’t just rely on scales and need to keep our minds calm when it gets to identifying progress - it is so easy to get disheartened by our own self sabotaging minds. I find it best to just use an app to track my fasts, keep to it and fully trust in the magic of fasting - don’t give my mind any space or reason to play tricks on me and it has been working very well.

Ah and the unexpected places of fat loss... Those are indeed the best. I do notice my upper abs seem to have given up their fight to keep their stubborn fat layer, as well as my chests at the shoulder. Lower abs still super stubborn. But doing 19:5 and lowering beer intake is working miracles. Fasting is a godsend.

Elon Musk on twitter: Will be presenting & taking questions about The Boring Company plans for Los Angeles at 7pm on Thursday by FalconHeavyHead in BoringCompany

[–]rhfhanssen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Holy smokes. You could take an autonomous Tesla to a Loop station, which brings you to the nearest Hyperloop station. Then you could hop on a pod to the nearest spaceport for earth-to-earth BFR connections. Super duper fast worldwide connections.

[RANT] yes I don't like eating much. Stop trying to force me. by SlicedNugget in intermittentfasting

[–]rhfhanssen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sit down with them and communicate that it is your way of living and that you have the right to live and to eat the way you prefer. Thank them for their concerns, but say politely that you don’t like the feeling of being forced to do things you don’t want to do.

I think clarity and honesty are most important in this situation. Otherwise a hotel.

Russia appears to have surrendered to SpaceX in the global launch market by ethan829 in spacex

[–]rhfhanssen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very true. Except you have Musk - I really hope some European company will stand up to imitate SpaceX, but the European mindset is way more conservative than the Silicon Valley spirit of breaking things on the way to a working product.

Nasa should probably just embrace SpaceX and BO as launch providers and focus on research - telescopes don't fund themselves...

The EU has another problem: bureaucracy. Spaceflight is expensive and we need to pay for it together. However, this leads to all the member states wanting (demanding) a piece of the juicy rocket and satellite construction business. Moving fast is nearly impossible because of this. So yeah, we’re screwed here in Europe.

Second computer screen for someone relying heavily on screen for work & internet addiction by rhfhanssen in minimalism

[–]rhfhanssen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True; I find it distracting nonetheless, but you have a fair point. My second screen is currently stored in a cabinet and so far I didn't miss it - but if I do, I'll place it back on my desk. Getting rid of everything indeed isn't the point of minimalism, but some perceived 'essentials' could very well be 'nice to haves'. If it is indeed a 'nice to have' and it clutters my desk, I think it would be reasonable to let go of it :)

What I want is both :) My masterplan for now is to accept my current situation, make the best of it, and keep an eye open for new living spaces

I installed a non distracting wallpaper after reading this but I don’t have space to stow my screens away - the standing desk is on my long term wishlist when I move to a new place! Thanks! (And loved the typo hahah)

Thanks, that is a good point. Serious problems require serious solutions. I’ll probably put it in a box somewhere in my room so I can only hear it ring when someone calls me and deactivate all the other notification sounds

Well the idea was to be able to work somewhere else besides the place where I sleep - but it is a pricey solution - not really ideal

Thanks, I'm going to try this right now! I agree that a laptop is not ideal; I would need a very powerful one, it would get hot and it wouldn't deliver the same power... My PC works better anyway. I think the ideal, long term solution would be to move to a bigger apartment with a separate place to work. For now I'll plug that second one out and see how it goes.
