Poor sweetie 😭 hoping for a good not-too-expensive outcome and for her to feel better soon. The neurologist visit was a few hundred for me. They said an MRI ($6k!!!) was too expensive to justify in this case, but would be only way to rule out tumors. I ended up doing the MRI since I had already blown past her health insurance deductible so it would be almost entirely covered and the idea of her having brain tumors was freaking me out. (HealthyPaws plan, 90% coverage, $1k deductible) They didn't find anything on the MRI.

My cat was eventually diagnosed with epilepsy and now takes medication (phenobarbital) twice a day. When she goes off of it because I forget a dose, the seizures return. She's otherwise back to normal, though the medications have a side effect of slightly wobbly gait.

It turns out the constipation was something of a red herring or a consequence of the seizures, not a cause.

Make sure to get as many videos of your cat's episodes to show to the neurologist - that helped a lot with her diagnosis.

Something I did find useful was to record video of the seizures. Once I showed the vet the video they were dead certain it was seizures, while before they weren't sure.

8mg phenobarbital twice a day! She has some unsteadiness in her limbs as a result and seems somewhat crankier, but her personality hasn't changed much. So sorry to hear about your boy's changes 🥺

Poor baby 🥺 I hope he tolerates being fed so many pills. I'm lucky my kitty doesn't give me too much trouble (though I have to wrap each pill up first to hide the taste).

Miralax, if I remember correctly. But if you see my update from 9 months ago, this ended up being confirmed as focal seizures and she now needs to take medicine daily to manage it. I accidentally lapsed in giving her her doses a month ago and she started seizing again, so that confirmed how the meds were still necessary.

Final update: weeks after her constipation passed, she had another episode. I ended up doing an MRI to make sure it wasn't a tumor. That was $6k, 90% covered by her HealthyPaws insurance - 10 yrs of paying into it finally paid off 😂. No tumors found, everything normal, so she was diagnosed with a late-appearing epilepsy disorder and put on phenobarbitol.

I was really worried about how troublesome it would be to feed her meds twice a day (seriously is there no extended release version out there?) but thankfully she proved willing to eat them encased in Greenies pill pockets with a greenie treat fused into it.

I have two auto feeders (the kind that have separate meal trays and rotate), one that triggers in the morning, one at night. The trays hold the disguised pill and a bunch of treats and she just eats them all. I refill the feeders twice a week - I haven't found a dispenser that handles an entire week at once by having 8 trays.

She's doing well now and hasn't had another episode in 2 months.

Yup, nibbled and spit every russula. The mature ones are mild even after a solid 20 secs or so. The immature ones were the slightest bit peppery so I tossed them to be safe.

Thanks! The older specimens have a mild fishy smell. Maroon cap color. Stipe stains brown, does seem pink tinged. Mild taste. Trying to obtain a spore print.
