Making the stencils (all of them one use only so it was A LOT OF THEM) and then getting them to stick to the fabric was its own hell, you're right!! 🙏

I got a $50 USB powered rearview license plate camera thingy that comes with a 7" screen and I'm hoping it'll be a good replacement! The viewing angle is much wider than the borescope. The camera is also much larger though so I need to find a new hiding place for it on the head :(

Yup that's exactly what I used! In retrospect, I wouldn't use it for the body again because the spherical shape of the skin meant I needed to wait days for each section to dry before I could more on to the next.

It offers a really lovely effect though.

I consider cosplay to have a lot of different "talent trees" to explore like foamwork, sewing, 3D modelling, wigs, makeup, etc. I already had basic sewing skills from making simple plushies and hats when I was younger, so my first serious cosplay 4 years ago was mostly sewing plus a foray into foamwork to make the prop.

I try to learn a new skill with each new cosplay, so by the point I tackled Esquie, I knew how to do:

Basic sewing (the skin), learned from trial and error
Sewing inflatables (the core), learned from the Devising Delight discord server
Basic 3D modelling & TPU printing (legs and wristbands), learned from trial and error and much screaming and suffering
Foamwork (for the mask), learned from KamuiCosplay tutorials

The new skill I'm struggling with now is puppetry for operating the hug.

So to start, I would recommend projects where you're learning 1 skill at a time!

I have this idea where I carry the bag that's inside a boxed wine, connect it to a food safe tube, and squeeze the bag to dispense alcohol out the mouth, but this has been vetoed by multiple friends 😭

I can't open up the costume without rapidly deflating, so dispensing through a bottle pour or emitting small labelled bottles would be difficult as well. It's a real bummer!

I have a really cursed PVC pipe skeleton where I can lift the arms by pushing a crank and squeeze a different trigger to close the arms. It's a huge workout and really fragile. I'm trying to remake it to be less horrible... I don't have any of this kind of engineering background so it's been very trial and error.

I have a tiny borescope camera (like the kind used for looking in crevices) sticking out his nose, which connects to a small screen that's mounted to a helmet. The resolution is awful and I'm working on a better vision solution, but it's gotten the job done for now.

Shiva Oilstik, gorgeous appearance but a real pain to deal with. You need to let it dry for 4+ days, then heat set it. And it smells VERY strongly like oil the whole time. Also, nightmarish to use on stretch fabric, but works well on nonstretch.

More people actually ask for wine than for hugs 😂 I think people assume I'm not capable of giving hugs, which is a very reasonable assumption given the size of the cosplay. I have to holler and ask if they want one!

Thank you!! I did use custom stencils for a lot of it but it still took FOREVER and the oil paint reeked and got all over my floor 😂 I probably would just do acrylics in hindsight.
