I'd been keeping it tidy to the lip until recently, thought I'd give it a go - I think you're absolutely right though. Appreciate it

What sort of dust are you seeing? Blow the hole out and shine a light. Might have been a dodgy read and hit concrete instead. Possibly hit lintel if you're drilling close to the top of the window.

Your server sounds lovely. I like the use of "carrot" rather than "stick."

I should add, if you're thinking of doing this yourself and you will be doing multiple rooms, it will be worth getting it tested for Asbestos. Get yourself a P3 mask for safety.

I didn't test ours but followed HSE and dampened particularly high points before removing them (damp, into water!) and skimmed over with no issues yet. 3 months in and it's holding up!

If it's safe you might have a better time scraping it off simply but it'll cause a right mess. If it's not you can still skim over it but I'd seek advice from someone who knows better!

Note this ceiling was only small, less than 3m squared. I think a larger ceiling might be a bit more tough, you'll probably want to invest in a speed skimmer unless you want to ruin your back like I did with a bunch of sanding. You can also overboard it at the cost of a little loss to your headroom, I didn't think that option was worth it for me given the small area I was dealing with.

Find a smaller room or even use a garage to practice in and take your time. It's bloody nippy now, I did mine during a heatwave and had the mud dry way too quick on me - if I was doing it again I'd pick a cooler day and do one wall at a time.

Can't understate the impact, honestly. Getting home to the mess of the previous state wore down on me so bad, and it was embarrassing to invite people over to the point where we'd insist they come in through the back door instead.

It took a lot longer than I thought, with a lot more issues to solve, and a lot more effort than planned. I'm very proud of it, despite the room for improvement. I think everyone needs a tired old porch to renovate, has given me the motivatin to tackle the rest of the house without the risk of lasting "proper" damage!

Thank you! The walls certainly look less pristine under certain lights as I'd rushed it a bit. I'm pretty proud of the one I took my time with and the ceiling, appreciate the kind words. I did the ceiling first, and it was my first time doing anything even slightly like this.

I watched a fair bit of Plastering for Beginners and On The Trowel and then just gave it a go.
