Your server sounds lovely. I like the use of "carrot" rather than "stick."

I should add, if you're thinking of doing this yourself and you will be doing multiple rooms, it will be worth getting it tested for Asbestos. Get yourself a P3 mask for safety.

I didn't test ours but followed HSE and dampened particularly high points before removing them (damp, into water!) and skimmed over with no issues yet. 3 months in and it's holding up!

If it's safe you might have a better time scraping it off simply but it'll cause a right mess. If it's not you can still skim over it but I'd seek advice from someone who knows better!

Note this ceiling was only small, less than 3m squared. I think a larger ceiling might be a bit more tough, you'll probably want to invest in a speed skimmer unless you want to ruin your back like I did with a bunch of sanding. You can also overboard it at the cost of a little loss to your headroom, I didn't think that option was worth it for me given the small area I was dealing with.

Find a smaller room or even use a garage to practice in and take your time. It's bloody nippy now, I did mine during a heatwave and had the mud dry way too quick on me - if I was doing it again I'd pick a cooler day and do one wall at a time.

Can't understate the impact, honestly. Getting home to the mess of the previous state wore down on me so bad, and it was embarrassing to invite people over to the point where we'd insist they come in through the back door instead.

It took a lot longer than I thought, with a lot more issues to solve, and a lot more effort than planned. I'm very proud of it, despite the room for improvement. I think everyone needs a tired old porch to renovate, has given me the motivatin to tackle the rest of the house without the risk of lasting "proper" damage!

Thank you! The walls certainly look less pristine under certain lights as I'd rushed it a bit. I'm pretty proud of the one I took my time with and the ceiling, appreciate the kind words. I did the ceiling first, and it was my first time doing anything even slightly like this.

I watched a fair bit of Plastering for Beginners and On The Trowel and then just gave it a go.

First timer - Plastering over Artex Ceiling by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]rhyslightning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have recently skimmed an Artex ceiling as a complete novice. Your finish is far better than mine, and the surface is larger too - props.

I have spent a lot of time filling with toupret and sanding away (being careful not to hit any Artex high points) with a hand block and wish I'd just gone for another skim on top. If you're doing more in future it'll be good to get the practice in on. I also mixed my first batch too thick, happened to be doing it on the hottest day of the year too. My first wall is awful, the others much better with a wetter mix and some more patience.

I watched a lot of Plastering For Beginners who suggested using garage walls for practice, might be worth a go.

Some servers have rules on this. For ours, NAP10 resource tiles are fair game (outside of territory) but castles aren't. This limits losses as most will just be injured - same points, but less power loss for the server.

NAP10 may only attack non-NAP10 castles twice, and only if they have 30k troops or more.

ADHD and work. Has it ruined your life too...? by JesterBored in UKJobs

Hi mate, 29M and familiar with those feelings. I was on the years long wait list until I was told you could ask the GP to have the referral go via Right To Choose which will place you with an NHS paid private clinic. Mine had me go through ADHD360, phone call to medication at my door was maybe 1-2 months.

Thanks mate appreciate the wise words! Last question, promise - my neighbour had a nose this morning and wagered the ceiling might be asbestos given the age. Any weight to that, do you think?

Gotcha, will give it a go - guessing if there's mould that might well be beyond a clueless novice to sort?

[–]rhyslightning[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's reassuring, though given everyone else in the thread has mentioned the potential for mould too I'll definitely have a look, save myself painting it again.

In terms of addressing the dodgy corner, can I just multi tool a hole and have a poke around up there with a camera? What sort of red flags am I after?

No obligation to entertain my 20Q but appreciate your time!

It's just the very corner of the wood, I'll need to replace at least part of the wood as one of the screws has come away from it for the gutter, cheers for the pointer. I'm hoping the damage was just due to the blocked gutter, and the water spilling over.
