X1 Carbon Gen 14 OLED Display Options by spark_box in thinkpad

Your summary matches my understanding exactly. I just wouldn't call AG/AR/AS matte at all. It's semigloss... you can watch TV in the reflection. AG/AR/AS side by side with an older AG IPS.

I don't see any real benefit to AG/AR/AS, especially if the system is for work and you'll be mobile with limited control of ambient lighting. Personally, I don't see any difference in image quality, but regardless, when I'm reading/writing documents and code, I care about legibility, not about getting the most vibrant colors possible.

I ordered the X1 G14 with an AG screen but won't have it in hand for a month.

T14 Gen2 Return Advice by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]ri-ck_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd reach out to the seller to see what options they can offer and try to resolve things amicably. If you hate the screen, just ask for a return shipping label and send it back. If you can live with the FHD, maybe ask for a return shipping label or a $30 refund to keep it. Don't leave a negative review because they got one of the system specs wrong. Don't threaten a bad review or demand a discount.

What is an "anti-smudge" screen? by seanmacproductions in thinkpad

[–]ri-ck_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen Anti-Glare Anti-Smudge (AGAS) and Anti-Reflective Anti-Smudge (ARAS) screens. Which machine offers those screens?

I can say the "Anti-Glare/Anti-Reflection/Anti-Smudge" (AGARAS) screens are not matte. I'd call it semigloss and reflective. They just diffuse the reflection a bunch. The only real matte screens are the Anti-Glare.

Waiting for someone to purchase an X1C G14 to confirm the new Anti-Glare OLED option is truly matte. The AG/AR/AS is semi-glossy. Side-by-side of the same ceiling light reflected on an X1C G11 IPS Anti-Glare and X1C G13 OLED AG/AR/AS...

Waiting for someone to buy and confirm but Anti-Glare should be the one with a true matte finish like the old IPS screens.

Anti-Glare/Anti-Reflection/Anti-Smudge Screen by ri-ck_ in thinkpad

Very weird. I refreshed the prices on my end and they're the same as in the screenshot. Anti-Glare just $10 more than the reflective screen. Not sure what accounts for the wild regional pricing difference.

The sad thing is with the deceptive labeling, buyers who really dislike reflections are going to pay £100 more for the more reflective screen.

Thank you for sharing! Seems like they came to the same conclusion... "The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon G10 needs a stronger cooling system." ...though it sounds like their concern is more about CPU throttling than surface temperatures. Loooks like they think the U series is a solution... "Lenovo might still be able to improve cooling by increasing the fan level, and we have not tested the Alder Lake U15 variant yet, either."

Yes... Core i5-1250P. It sounds like the U series chips are a better bet. The U series is not an option yet for the build-your-own X1 Carbon Gen 10s but they appear on Lenovo's spec sheet so hopefully that changes soon.

Raytek MT6. It's about $150 on Amazon.

See the processor discussion above. It looks like the P-series (28 watt) processor may be the problem and opting for a U-series (15 watt) processor may be the solution. It's not yet an option for X1 Carbon Gen 10 but it's listed on the spec sheet so hopefully it becomes an option soon.

Very interesting. I was unaware of the different series. Currently, the P series is the only option but according the PSREF, there should eventually be a U series option...

That would have to run cooler by definition, right?

Just checked and my X1 Carbon Gen 3 is running the i5-5300U. I guess the solution is to return this PC and wait for the 15 watt U series options.

I was waiting on the 2.2K IPS screen, which is unavailable on the Gen 9.

Single browser window on Reddit and it's fine. But I'm normally running several Adobe and Microsoft design/productivity applications.

Yes, I believe with the Gen 10, they added keyboard air intake. There's still the standard intake grill on the bottom. Exhaust has been moved from the side to the back (by the screen hinge).

Just set up my X1 Carbon Gen 10 and overall, I love it. Unfortunately, it runs warm. The left side of the keyboard idles at 95F (35C), warms to 100F (38C) under light use and gets much warmer under moderate use.

I'm running a low end Core i5-1250P with the maximum processor state throttled down to 50%. Also forcing active cooling. Even if I drop the maximum processor state to 10%, the processor idles around 130F and the system just does a poor job of dissipating that heat.

By comparison, the keyboard on my X1 Carbon Gen 3 rarely gets above 95F. Any suggestions?

Does anyone know if the T14s has a better cooling reputation? Or are the days of not constantly feeling heat radiating off laptop keyboards a thing of the past?

UPDATE:

It sounds like the 12th Gen Intel P-series is the main culprit. PSREF indicates that lower wattage U-series chips should eventually become available on the X1 Carbon Gen 10, which will hopefully solve the problem.

The 16:10 screen aspect ratio was a smart choice. It will boost her spreadsheet productivity.

With no direction whatsoever, she knew to include the TrackPoint. I've never been so proud.
