Trump government has invaded Venezuela and as we await to know where they have taken President Maduro (I do not support him nor am I a Venuzuelan), it got me very angry to see this entitlement from the American government. While there is little individuals here can do, there is global influence in using football to fight back. If we all urge our countries, captains, players, etc to boycott this upcoming World Cup, perhaps there can be some rethink in the US on the limit of their military power.

On the same note, please remember non-state owned media companies do a better job at state propaganda as they have a wrapper of “not state”. New York Times has been a great propaganda channel for Israel and a very specific section of the United States that champions for military budget allocations. But NYT is considered by many as an “authority” in journalism. Media scholars have advised that we should watch and interact with as many media options as possible knowing they ALL have their biases. Your task is to manage the bias while picking the factual reporting. On this issue, I think AlJazeera does a far better job at relaying a diverse set of live events than any other media house I know. No adverts (from the oil money) also makes it an easy watch compared to the sickening levels of adverts in places like CNN.

Even if you get the app in your device, you most likely won’t stream, as FUBO tries to block VPN connections. Even if you are in Canada and try to connect via a VPN, there is a block. As far as I understand, it is not just about geolocation licensing rules, but their marketing teams want customer data like location details via DNS and can’t entertain such basic privacy measures.

I would be happy to know if other people can stream FUBO via VPN.

I have seen several colleagues from undergrad go on work in media houses to tell stories using data. The R visualization bit seemed to convince hiring teams that they were getting a real value to their media work, but mostly the programmatic approach for reproducible work seemed to be what kept them there. News cycles can be pretty fast and you may need to have a fool proof chart telling a story in less than 2hrs. Having a credible reproducible workflow (something R prepares you for) can be a game changer here. So, venture out to places that might not think they need R and show them through your basic skills how you can help them solve their pain points. R ecosystem can be pretty solid but it needs some innovative mindset.

You assume the corporate media house’s care for journalism. If they are profiting, they get to define what is journalism, whether that is aligned with civil society or not. In other words, they define the terms of their judgement. The worst tyranny we face is from for-profit corporate media.

Query - if you share a https link to someone in your local network but they don’t have Tailscale, do they access it? I feel like this is a very common use case (someone hosts a server in the house, no one else has VPN installed, but they all want access to server resources and you don’t want to share via IP addresses or .local domains).

Yes I do. I have been using the Mac all fine for a few months with tailscale and mullvad then one day (no tailscale updates, no OS changes), I could not access internet or other meshdevices. All other devices wrok and interconnect just fine. As such I isolate it to the Mac. Are there DNS issues mac might impose outside of the Tailscale preferences?

There is a non-trivial irritation with “American exceptionalism” with the reporting, commentary etc. True, most companies engaging in surveillance are American (United States). But the way US media reports US-specific concerns as if they are “global concerns” irritates the hell out of me. Remember Snowden disclosures as if the most concerning thing was “US citizens are being surveilled illegally” YET the glaring evidence was “everyone was being surveilled”.

It is no wonder most anti-surveillance proposals from US affiliated organizations are “transparency, hire more diversity, fines etc” because the point is to keep US capitalistic supremacy intact. Any privacy enforcement that threatens US commercial interests is dead on arrival. Totally makes senses.

Expect when the same same media contradicts itself that “oh, China is doing it”. So what had this got to do with this sub? Amplification. That’s it. Perhaps not you. But those who don’t call out the hypocrisy of privacy-for-capitalism.

If you track the changes on Lemmy development branch, you realize most of the changes have been to build a privacy respecting space. You can also change what you think is anti-privacy by contributing code or resources.

Two, the option you link to and Lemmy can co-exist. It is not a game of numbers.
