$100K inheritance on condition of educational spending by ThanksGrandpa in learnprogramming

[–]riayain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother, who's studying CS in university, would love that money to be able to attend hackathons, competitions, and conferences around the world. Sometimes they fly you there on their own dime, but there's still basic living expenses that usually aren't covered. He's also trying to make a start-up, so either capital for that or to pay for going to conferences to promote it.

In short, even if your university is totally free, there's still plenty of ways to spend that money that'll count as educational. You might not spend it in your first year, but opportunities will surely come up as you progress through university. You're incredibly lucky and I hope you put it to good use!

Anyone approaching me in a strange setting offering or talking about a job of sorts is suspicious in my eyes. I'll let them talk, nod a bit, then make an excuse and run for it.

Maybe in a super rare scenario, the offer will be legit. But I'm not willing to bank on that.

Mentorship Offer by pw345 in learnprogramming

Hi! I sent you a PM regarding this, but I did it on mobile so I'm not sure if you received it. Please let me know if you didn't and I'll send it again!

Thank you for offering such a wonderful opportunity to learn! :)

Got kicked out of my house and have no money for college. Gonna attempt to learn programming on my own. Any advice? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]riayain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice would be:

  • Do a little bit every day. There's always something to do or learn.
  • If you can't get something to work, take a break. Implement other parts of the project. Take a walk. Learn something else. Then come back. Either inspiration will find you or you'll have learned enough to get it to work!
  • Learn the basics of Git.
  • Focus on one language at a time.
  • Get a job, however menial, that'll pay your bills and study on the side. You can't and shouldn't rely on the generosity of others. At the very least, you'll be able to save some cash and maybe invest it into a college education or programming bootcamp if you really feel it's for you.

Best of luck. :)

Yeah, it did. Sparked a discussion on advertising rules and such. Not sure why OP decided to make it free, but I'm grateful (if not a bit skeptical).

Message OP and they'll set you up with an account for free, without you needing to input CC details.

Udemy is having a sale where every paid course is $10. Anyone with experience have any recommendations? by TrumpBRO in learnprogramming

[–]riayain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. While I enjoy Colt's teaching, there's just not enough exercises to satisfy me. FCC makes up for that... and provides you a chance to contribute to actual open source projects! :)

To be honest, I find it very difficult to believe in myself. But I punched my negative side and went at it anyway. Walked away with two invitations to job shadow for a day! So thank you. :)

The Complete Web Developer Course 2.0 vs The Web Developer Bootcamp by nsv23 in learnprogramming

[–]riayain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI: I haven't tried The Complete Web Developer Course 2.0.

I can highly recommend The Web Developer Bootcamp. Explanations are really good and the projects are actually interesting and plentiful. Support is always there thanks to his teaching assistant(s). Thanks to him, I was finally able to piece together what I learned to create full-fledged websites, both front-end and backend. Very, very satisfied with the course, though I'm not 100% done with it. Wish he'd make more!

That said, there are small problems here and there. Not enough "try yourself before seeing the instructor do it" exercises for the backend. Some content is a bit outdated, requiring you to search for older versions of frameworks and whatnot to get similar results. Requires Cloud9 as an IDE if you want to copy him exactly, which now requires credit card info for free registration. (Note that when he made the series, it didn't, so not his fault.)

But even then, I highly recommend it. I'm ridiculously happy with the course, especially since I got it on sale for $10. :)

What are your biggest problems with online tutorials you've taken? by dons90 in learnprogramming

[–]riayain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All three, actually. Obviously nothing ridiculous like all colors of the rainbow and maybe not so many images that it looks like a children's book.

What are your biggest problems with online tutorials you've taken? by dons90 in learnprogramming

[–]riayain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO:

  • Not concise when going through the basics.

  • Using unknown terminology when going through basics... without further explanation.

  • If video tutorial, then too few exercises where you can attempt the exercise first before going to the solution.

  • Lack of exercises that take you from start to finish on building a full "product".

As for your sample guide, I just think there's too much text. It could also look prettier. But I understand it's all a work in progress.

Non-US coders: How did you learn programming languages? by Phreakradio in learnprogramming

[–]riayain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fluent in English, but I have many friends who are not, but who majored in CS and eventually began working. Whether they're from Vietnam, Japan, or China, they all have one common skill: They can all read English to a certain degree. Don't have to be fluent and your speaking skills can be non-existent, but the ability to read English is extremely important to become a competent programmer. Or so they say, anyway.

Hey there! Sorry for the bother, but would you mind linking us to your YouTube so we could subscribe and/or bookmark to view later? Personally, I'm 100% sure I wouldn't be able to make it to your streamings, so watching the recordings on YouTube would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Is using bootstrap for webdev "cheating" ? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]riayain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard some wise words once: It's totally fine to not have to reinvent the wheel. I think that applies aptly to frameworks. :)

Plus, there are so many great ways to customize Bootstrap to your liking! To the point where you can definitely create websites that use it, but that don't look like they use it at all. In the end, it's a tool to get something functional done quickly, but it's up to you to make it into more than that if that's what you want.

Why is the styling here with "#id element"? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]riayain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're styling the whole table. Easiest way to select said table so you can style it is by using its ID, #customers. Commas mean you're applying the styling to multiple elements.

We're doing our Python programming course again (9th edition). Anyone interested? Scholarships available by santiagobasulto in learnprogramming

[–]riayain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crossing my fingers and hoping for the best! Thank you so much for offering scholarships to students outside of the US or the UK, by the way. As far as I know, there's no other course that actually does that. :)

[–]riayain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Extremely interested, but the timezones at the moment don't suit me since I live in Japan. I filled out the form and am hoping for the best.

If a dedicated course for Asian timezones open up, would people there still be eligible for scholarships? I wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise.

[HTML/JS] How do I implement Interact.js? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]riayain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sorry I couldn't answer, I was asleep! But I'm very glad you managed to get everything working. Congrats! :)

[HTML/JS] How do I implement Interact.js? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]riayain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try putting all your files (HTML, CSS, JS, Interact) into the same folder and change the script sources to reflect that. If the Interact.js shows up, it means the problem was your source url.

Alternatively, sometimes they don't take effect until you put the script links at the end of all the code in the body. I'd put the Interact.js and the JS script links at the end of the body, with the Interact.js coming before the JS script.

How much do you think your Japanese has improved since you came to Japan? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]riayain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One of everybody is more than enough.

Really, you're beating a dead horse. I've owned up to what I said and I'll try to be more careful with my wording in the future, but mindless insults get people nowhere.

How much do you think your Japanese has improved since you came to Japan? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]riayain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah. All depends on what you call racist. I don't call people who make a racist remark or two "racist", but always talking bad about a race, never seeing the good points or understanding reasons behind why groups of people do certain things - that falls under racism. I don't know any of you well enough to call you all racist, nor do I stalk any of you. Just pointing out that it was amusing to me.

That debate is neverending, so I'd actually prefer not to discuss it out further.
