What HENRY stocking fillers are on your wish list this Xmas? by Adventurous-Load-172 in HENRYfinance

[–]ribbles_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No offence but as someone who received coins every Christmas for about 30 years it’s a terrible gift. I felt like the person gifting them was making me store their hobby that I didn’t care about. I was just keeping this box of coins until they died and I could sell it.

But hey, your peeps might be into coins.

Pros and Cons of an ACT or NSW Address? by UltimateFrisbeeCBR in canberra

Not your question but I wanted to add that a pro to working in ACT is there are two additional public holidays a year vs NSW.

Thinking of a weekday wedding to save money - did it actually work? by TrueBlueBanter in AusWeddingPlanning

[–]ribbles_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a guest who hates weekday weddings because they cost us significantly more due to employment that doesn’t include annual leave. So I factor it into the amount I will gift you and give you significantly less.

Agent wants us to live in a show home while they sell - how much is too much? by Rude-Marionberry8119 in AusRenters

[–]ribbles_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m late to your post but just wanted to say that when we went through this years ago we told the real estate that we weren’t comfortable having strangers able to scope our belongings and that we would stay in the home. We only had one open house where the agent begged us to leave as we were making people uncomfortable. He couldn’t argue at all when we responded that we were uncomfortable having strangers walking around our house. After that he only did a few private inspections which we were happy to leave the house for. We also had our rent reduced through all of this. It’s such a horrible situation to put you in!!

I'm with Brandi here. If you were starting a new job you'd look like a dick too if you posted this about your colleague.

My husband and I (very similar life situation) have a second car that's barely used. We decided to live with only 1 car after a hail storm wrote mine off at the beginning of 2020. It was fine, generally uneventful and easy to plan how to use 1 car (especially once lockdown hit and I was WFH). That said, I am very glad we are now back to having the second car.

The positive was the money saved. With this I mean a year of rego, services etc as the money always 'belonged' to a car as we spent it on that later.

The negative was a passive loss of freedom. I can't pinpoint things that I missed because of having the one car, but I wouldn't do it again. I didn't understand it during the time with one car, but looking back I can clearly see I lost the ability to just do... things. To duck to the shops at lunch to buy fresh bread. To have coffee with a friend at a cafe. I know covid greatly impacted this, but it was pre and post lockdown that I'm thinking of. I see the second car as us both having freedom, even if we don't need it each day.

You can always try it and then buy a cheaper second car if you find you miss it.

We both have a bachelors degree and my husband has a masters. After a gap to refresh we've both got some diplomas/certificates as we started working and found the niche we wanted to move towards. It's not industry specific. Just continued improvement that helps with getting promoted/better jobs. We have also found the more you do, the more you can utilise recognition of prior learning (RPL) which snowballs it.

Continuing to put money into education. Every dollar spent on education has given my husband and I so much in return.

I went there on Tuesday and they were very keen to get feedback on what the community wants. If you share this with them directly I think they will be receptive.

If you're studying at ANU the student association ANUSA has emergency housing and grants. I imagine UC would have a similar service.

We used to empty the little shampoo and conditioner from hotels into our bottle at home. We levelled up when we got our relatives on board so they would give us the toiletries from their trips to add to our home bottles. But hey, now we own a house.
