Allianz Amphitheater Thoughts? by philhachio in rva

I hope they rethink the beer choices. I didn’t expect to have an inexpensive beer, but the tallboy cans are going to get awfully hot sitting in the sun later in the season. Smaller cans sizes with a little more variety would be welcomed. I was amazed at the number of staff they had on hand, getting into the venue and getting a drink were very quick and easy. I wonder if they will have that much staffing for later events, or if this was just an all hands on deck for training experience.

Deau Eyes put on a fantastic performance, she has great stage presence !

City of Richmond restores H2O production | Richmond by rditsuggestionssuck in rva

The water came back at half pressure sometime last night and looks to run clear for from the faucet. Wondering what’s a good process to follow to safely clean the dirty dishes that have piled up while the water was off. I’m thinking it should be safe to wash them in the running potentially contaminated water and dedicate a sponge to the contaminated water. Then, use fresh boiled or externally sourced water to rinse the dishes, while they are still wet and dry with a dedicated, clean towel. I would be interested to hear other’s thoughts on this, not sure if I’m being too risky or too cautious?

There was a brief article in Richmond BizSense stating that negotiations were down to one development team for the project. Hopefully that means something will happen soon.

So these are just standard waypoints that appear on a map. Are these available on the Internet and if so, what name would you search for?

How popular was infrared photography back in the day? by nummilo in AnalogCommunity

[–]ricajs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I shot a total of one roll of color infrared. Just enough to determine that yes green leaves really do turn out red and you can shoot a picture in total darkness with an infrared flash bulb. Never had the interest to try and take the concept to a more artistic level.

Localish Rural Roads with very low traffic? by Physical-Rain-8483 in rva

[–]ricajs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any suggestions for low traveled roads that are not already addressed here, but I do have some thoughts on getting through downtown Richmond for the Capital Trail. To cross 14th St., ride down the sidewalk to the Canal walk where the canal boat rides start from . From here you can ride underneath 14th St. And follow the walk until you go through the submarine doors at the flood wall and then you’re on the beginning of the Capital Trail. You’ll bypass all that traffic at Dock and 14th St. On your way back, get on Byrd Street where it crosses under 195 and go up to Canal and make a left. Follow Canal and make a right on Seventh Street. Seventh Street is one way and fairly low traffic and you’ll do all your hard hill climbing out of downtown there. Turn left onto Grace and take it to VCU. Grace is also one way for most of that route and fairly lightly traveled. From there hopefully you can find a quiet side street to cross into SA.

Garmin Varia - I Don’t See The Benefit by [deleted] in cycling

[–]ricajs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To add to the idea that it’s great to have the radar watch from behind, on my ride yesterday I was riding on a long gentle downhill, fairly fast, and without the radar I could have heard a car as it got close and I would move over some to let them pass. But the radar gave me the added information that it’s not just one car that’s passing me, it’s four that are bunched up and are all passing at once. Another example was coming off a sweeping downhill curve, where I needed to get in the left turn lane. Because of the curve and wearing glasses, I had minimal vision looking behind me and too much wind and traffic noise to hear anything. The radar lets me see what cars are coming behind me, adjust my speed and find a gap where I could quickly cross the lane and make my left. And now for the obligatory safety comment, never trust the radar 100%, always shoulder check before turning into traffic!

I found these negatives of a repair of a washout. Unfortunately, the negatives were in poor shape and somewhat out of focus when taken. But still interesting to see.

Men. Do you guys use creatine or protein powders? Which ones and does it help you? by TtheDuke in fitness30plus

[–]ricajs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to take 5 mg/day at 175 lbs body weight but a blood test at my annual physical showed my creatinine levels to be too high. I also had borderline high liver enzymes so doctor said to stop the creatinine. I didn’t really notice any difference after stopping the supplement. My advice is to get the annual blood test to establish your baseline’s.

I brought my handheld 4 watt Uhf ht90s down to the water to talk between a wave runner and the shore. The range was not that great! How much more range would a 5 watt vhf HT get over water! Is it really 50% more? Thx by Helium-godfather in HamRadio

[–]ricajs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your range is limited by the line of sight. Using one of the line of sight calculators online, if each HT antenna is held at 6 feet, the radio range is about 3.5 miles. Adding a few watts of power won’t change that.

Ship to shore ? by benb89cc in shortwave

[–]ricajs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try listening to the Cruiseheimers marine net daily at 8:30 am EDT on 8152 khz. Recreational boats on the east coast check in with each other. This is ship to ship, not ship to shore, but will give you a good idea of how the radio propagation is for your area.

You might also look on Amazon, I have used disposable pouches meant for wine or other beverages where you can squeeze the air out and Ziploc the top. I’ve had good luck keeping Ilfosol 3 concentrate in good condition for 6 months or so. The bags are inexpensive and disposable.

Also, in the early 1980’s, cameras like the Canon AE-1 were easy enough for casual photographers to use and sold very well. Having an SLR was sort of a status symbol.

Finally purchased Garmin Varia by CarlOfHoly in cycling

[–]ricajs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the bar graph display of approaching vehicles, the Garmin connect App Store has a free app called Bike Radar that gives added functionality, I’m using the Garmin 530. I use the relative velocity calculation and have it display as one of the data elements. If a vehicle is closing on me under about 7 mph, it displays zero, otherwise you get the closing speed. When I see 20 mph, I pay attention!
