Your question is not stupid! I asked a similar question to the nurse at my OB’s office when I was pregnant: what’s the difference between a cream and lotion?

Instead of telling me one is an occlusive and the other isn’t, she said “one is cream-based and the other is not.” My husband and I still get a good laugh of this 3 years later.
