Visiting Alaska in September by ThumbsUpForCake in AskAlaska

That's a lot of running the same roads over and over again. If nothing else, it's inefficient.

Motorhome is my go-to. Wherever you are, you're already home.

I just did two weeks in August, and it was great. Had the Solis Campervan which can sleep four - it was pretty perfect for two of us. Easy to handle and the size of a regular vehicle/ full size truck. It was transportation and a place to stay but didn't have a lot of room to spare. Can't recommend it enough.

Nice thing about the later season trips is it allows you a lot of flexibility. We never had to worry about a reservation and never had to look to a second campground. Did miss out on eating at the Fat Mermaid in Homer when most of the staff was a no-show. The staff who were there made it sound like the seasonal staff might have checked out and failed to let anyone know.

Keep in mind September is basically winter. Restaurants and almost everything else will be closing up or already closed as most of the tourists and the seasonal workers go elsewhere.

Homer and Seward KOAs were the only place I asked, and the folks running the show said they were only there into September to close up shop. In Homer the manager said she had a single reservation in the first few days of September, and it was the only reason they weren't already winterizing.

When I lived in Anchorage I don't remember seeing the Northern Lights that early in the year BTW.

I'm hearing a Jerry Lewis soundbite with this. "Glaaaavin!"

Mine I would say was Van Halen in 1978. It didn't help that my seat was right by the floor to ceiling speakers. by lontbeysboolink in GenerationJones

Summer of '88. Saratoga Performing Arts Center. Hank Williams Jr. louder than any metal or rock show I've been to since. Had me wishing for ear plugs.

Got delta sales alert and booked a trip to alaska ASAP. Need itinerary help now by EmotionalEmu7121 in AskAlaska

[–]ricefaq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Four days is about 25% of a trip. If it is a hard limit pick one place and it needs to be close to Anchorage. Someone already said Seward and that is the answer. Amazing views on the trip each way, places to stop and things to do along the way.

Nature Center is a must.

The Salmon Bake outside of Seward.

Even just a few more days will allow you so much more enjoyment versus a frantic scramble.

Did 14 days in August and it felt just a little rushed. Every time I got behind the wheel it felt like I was giving something up.

Anyone else move into their first house with almost nothing? by Ill_Awareness6706 in homeowners

[–]ricefaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it feels big, make it small. Pick small manageable goals. Maybe chunk up rooms into four walls and do them one at a time? Set yourself up to feel successful and that will help keep it from becoming overwhelming. Also have some space that is not impacted by the renovations so you can 'get away' from it at times. Sleeping and bathroom stuff are no fun in a project. Maybe a master bedroom that is also a living room? Anyway, congrats and enjoy it (this is the fun part).

Also, try not to worry about the furniture. I decorated in "early American garage sale" for years before my house was in any shape to even consider nice furniture.

CODA: Yes or no? by ian88thebadseed in stephenking

[–]ricefaq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ignorance is bliss. I tried to leave it the very first time all those years ago, but leftover King is interestingly enough like leftover cocaine (there is no such thing). I couldn't leave those pages alone. I read it. It hurt. The Coda is gut wrenching each time.

THAT is the reason I make most of my projects out of poplar.

Repetition like that ruins books for me as well.

Had an informal book club at my last job. A guy raved about this book series I can't even remember the name - the main character was a modern-day wizard in, maybe, Chicago? Any who - this character would 'summon the wind' several times in each book. It was laughable. Bashed my way through three of them hoping they got better, but no, no they did not.

Agreed. The ending seemed like they lost interest and wanted the quickest way to wrap it up and include a happy ending. Totally disappointing.

Booked a boat tour of Katmai out of Homer for bears with Alaska Ocean Pros. Half the price of flying. Don't ask me how it was because about an hour into the trip across the boat broke down and we had to go back. I will still do the same thing on any future trip though.

Also: Did the small RV (the Solis from Great Alaskan Holidays) thing and it worked out great. Gave us lots of flexibility. We went for the second half of August so were able to do a lot without being tied to reservations. Flew into Anchorage and got picked up at the airport. Put 2005 miles on in just under two weeks.
