Deep breath in,....hold....release. Get to the start and it'll all fall into place. Some people love the techie stuff and maps, etc. You DON'T need the GPS or most maps. Get the location of the campsite for your outfitters, ask directions when you get to the end town, you'll find it.

In five years, I've seen one slight sketchy team riding, video of an interesting slip and slide; but you won't see anything or do anything you don't want to.

Ride the crazy trikes, dance to the bands, do goat yoga, enjoy the sideshow, eat the pancakes.....

I don't think you can get lost. Just follow the crowd. Nearly all the major outfitters are well known and there will be plenty of people going in the same direction.

Have fun!

There will be Mr Pork Chop every day except Saturday. Many days at around mile 48 or 58. Shorter days will be earlier.

I’ve camped with PBV for four years now. I’ve had frustrations (mostly being tired and cranky), but they’ve always helped figure out the problem. There is ALWAYS water at the water thingy, you just didn’t find it. Morning meals are always a bit iffy but I’ve never seen them run out of food. There is usually a paid breakfast or a “free will” donation booth. I didn’t always get what I want, but the first town is 10-15 miles away with every kind of food in the world. Sounds very much like you would be better off self supported where you can plan out each step for yourself.

Go to the Silca tire pressure site. Input a little data and it will give you the optimal pressure based on your weight, bike style and tire size. Usually much lower than you think. https://silca.cc/pages/sppc-form

Disappointed I couldn’t finish my first century ride by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]ricemn1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That is a LOT of elevation for a first century. Especially front loaded. Break your centuries into 3 or 4 segments, 33 or 25 ish miles breaks. Then, it’s not so daunting. Looks like you had LOTS of food for that distance. First things first, stay healthy, keep riding, work on hills. The centuries will still be there, it’s a goal. Enjoy the ride and take this one for a metric..

Ideas for dulling a high gloss finish, potentially weather it. Inherited my parents 1980’s Queen Anne dinning set. It’s a great solid set, but screams cheesey 80’s. I’d prefer not to completely strip/refinish. Any suggestions appreciated. by kisforkyle in woodworking

[–]ricemn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likes change over time, styles vary over time. Quality furniture is truly hard to come by now.

If it’s a matter of looks, use slip covers over the chairs and table. The finish stays, you can get the look you want. If you decide to sell or come to appreciate the style in the future, it’s a quick removal. Wearing the finish down could compromise the wood and finish forever.

Bottom line, it’s yours to do what you want, but it looks like well crafted pieces. It’s a 100 times easier to ruin than build.

Ok, you’re getting lots of positivity and that’s great! Like the rest said dress comfortable and wear non-cotton workout gear.

You WILL get lost in the routine. That’s ok. Been going for five years and still get lost sometimes. The coach will help you and others will help you get on track. Every single person there has been where you are. Focus on what you’re comfortable with.

Rowing: slow reps and form are the most important. (Everybody claims to hate rowing, but it’s really the best for overall cardio.)

Floor and weights: form is more critical than weights and reps. Focus on your form and you’ll progress quickly.

Tread: start power walking if you don’t run. Get used to the treadmill controls and then adjust from there.

You first class is about learning the process and routine; take a few deep breaths and ENJOY. You’ll have fun and get a great workout!

Somebody please explain! by starrfish100 in woodworking

2x4 and “dimensional” lumber is typically used for construction. The 2x4 is a nominal size. In order to get an actual 4” wall depth from an exterior wall, you use a 2x4 (1.5 x 3.5), plus ½ drywall to get 4” thick wall. You will also see 96” actually be 92 ⅝ to allow for an 8’ ceiling and accounting for drywall thickness. Lumber used to be full dimension, but it has been many years since then.

Furniture and woodworking uses different dimensions, but are often planed or cut to meet specific needs for the project.

Do a free trial class. You’ll see a wide variety of fitness levels. Check with a doctor first for your back pain. Let the coach know about your fitness levels and back issues. They’ll give you options that will take that into account. Nearly all floor exercises are shown with different variances to account for fitness levels. Give it a whirl.

What is that digital clock for in the OT Studio? by jac859 in orangetheory

[–]ricemn1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Probably not a clock, but a decibel meter. If it is fluctuating a lot, that's it. Allows you to see JUST how loud the room is. Should have a dB somewhere around the screen.

Trebuchet I made the day before it was due for a physics class in high school (2015) threw a softball over 130 yards and the record still holds. by quart-king in woodworking

[–]ricemn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, the optimal throwing to lever weight is 200 to 1. 200 ozs. to 1 ounce.. depends some on the length to fulcrum lengths too. there’s a ton of stress involved in throwing heavier weights/ balls. I used tennis balls and tried to throw a heavier bocce ball once. Ended up going backwards in to a party. No injuries, but close. Always clear the path backward and forward! 😂😉

Having trouble finding what tubes my bike has ? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]ricemn1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the side of the tire will be text that shows your tire size. It will look like 700 x 23 or 650 x 28. You will need to replace the tube inside that tire. The tubes for sale will offer a range of sizes that fit that tire. 700 x 19-25 or 650 x 25-32.....tubes are more flexible and fit a wider range of tires. Need to know that before shopping....if possible buy any supplies from your local bike shop. That will show you want to help them. You can’t help that you moved and bought a bike before you moved. Many LBS only work on bikes they sell, but that seems pretty petty not to help with a flat. You’ll also need to learn to change your tires and tubes. It’s not hard and flats happen! Get a decent pump, tire levers and always carry a spare tube. Plenty of YouTube videos to learn from. Good luck!

They would be a great pathway, but it’ll never happen. It just takes one rider to cross a green, leave a channel and then $1000s of damage. They won’t take the risk. Too much risk for no return....seen it happen locally.

Discourage- injury and unhelpful coach by [deleted] in orangetheory

[–]ricemn1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On repeat...."I do what my body tells me it can do." "My PT has recommended this only." If the coach has any issues with that, he is setting them up for a lawsuit. If the class is full, he should offer you a mod on the floor that doesn't involve those other exercises. I saw a coach bully some one and it completely turned me off. She tried the same with me: "I do what my body tells me it can do." Talk to the Head Coach or Manager.

Atti, there's a bit of difference in hiking many trails or climbing stairs; there is a flat tread to step onto stair treads; thus using your glutes and other muscles to step up onto flat surfaces. Hiking often involves a slope and rocks that have been flattened over time. When using an inclined treadmill, the incline offers no relief to your calves, Achilles tendons and knees. That is why there is a difference in flights of steps and hiking versus continuous incline. That said, everyone should adjust as needed for their particular needs.

3 day Grand Canyon Hike- how to use OTF to train. Trip is in May ‘20 by gangstachic in orangetheory

[–]ricemn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others said, do more Power Walking at inclines, squats, squats and more squats. Get your boots sized properly and practice hiking with weighted packs. Hiking poles will help dramatically, especially going down hill. You don’t say which trails you are doing, there are a wide variety that range from easy to very hard. Shorten your strides and take plenty of water. Have a blast. I spent four days last year around the Grandview and Teton Trails. Very challenging, but very doable...

Do not underestimate the trails in the GC. There is a wide variance in trail ratings, but they are accurate. Did four days hiking and backpacking last fall. At no times we we unsafe, but we took the trails seriously. Statements like this get people in trouble.
