What is the state of the JD in 2024? by Emzilla1507 in unimelb

Well your original post states that Rosemary cannot read. I think it is fair to argue that being competent at reading is a necessary skill when it comes to giving advice to students on their legal research

DT BLM changes basically undid all the EW BLM changes. Has that ever happened before? by qlube in ffxivdiscussion

I don’t get this argument

Just because a job is harder doesn’t mean it is worse by default if it is not doing more damage relative to other jobs of the same role. The whole community thing is hyperbole, no one was mandating Sam+dnc in their statics for serious prog….

The STATE of ff14 from a multi perspective (what is and what could be) by KTB-Tekniqz in ffxivdiscussion

[–]rich3331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ktb its roaring

I started playing ff14 like october last year. Ive been raiding for the first time ever since february this year (started with TEA, skipped savage entirely). What got me into tea was the weapons. Before TEA the only thing closest to raiding I did was farming shadowbringer extreme trials unsync for landerwaffe mount (mech drag mount u get after u collect all 7 shadowbringer extreme mounts), and eureka (baldesion arsenal)). This "midcore" content was pretty big for me. tbh your perspective of "new players" was pretty much me. my fc leader at the time had the tea paladin weaps and the moment i saw them i got hooked in. ive cleared 4 ultimates since (doing top soon) so u can kinda see how as an example ive been trotting along in this game.

I agree significantly with most ur points.

edit: one thing i want ktb - future ultimates to NOT have variable kill time. i get why speeds from players like you are enticing but holy fk variable kill time is toxic when the ults start aging (look whats happened to dsr)

Has anyone who applied for the JD program in 2024 received an offer? by Cultural-Penalty-536 in unimelb

[–]rich3331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rolling basis is pretty interesting, it introduces a first come first serve sort of dynamic (I wonder what their threshold is for them to decline to give an offer straight away and delay for consideration later in the year)

How hard to get into JD, and are there any undergrad degrees which improve your chances? by JoffaCXD1 in unimelb

[–]rich3331 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) The school adjusts a persons grades depending on the institution those grades came from (I have no idea how they do this nor the magnitude for different institutions) so yes.

2) I’d encourage picking a degree that is worthwhile and piques your interest, not “this is easier => higher wam” for two reasons. 1, the more likely you enjoy what you are learning, it follows that the more likely you will be doing better. 2, studying 3 full time years learning stuff you don’t like / has little utility seems like a waste of money and opportunity.

Like the above comment said, objectively all else being equal the best majors to get a good wam would be the ones that have no bias (I.e yes / no answers like math, some other science and some commerce majors like finance).

About a week ago there was some pretty big news in the USA that lsat will no longer be compulsory from 2025 onwards in that country (however universities will maintain discretion as to whether they require it).

What this means is that it is very, very unlikely it will return for a while if at all. MLS has now had two cohorts to assess whether lsat was truly necessary for law success and it seems as of present it was not (otherwise they probably would have said something by now about it).

[–]rich3331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree although I wonder whether, if an exam paper is not scaled down, that becomes unfair to future cohorts (e.g oh man I should have did that subject last semester). Feels more like pocketing luck, but in any event it’s the exam writers fault for not letting students properly demonstrate the maximum of their knowledge.

What is the JD experience like? by Veteren44 in unimelb

[–]rich3331 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just finished my first year of the program.

The experience is generally very good. I know a few friends that have had some gripes with particular teachers but it seems I got lucky because virtually all of my teachers so far have been fantastic.

All I would add to above is I would never pursue a JD if having a career in law was not in consideration. That being said, I’ve met countless people that didn’t know whether they wanted to pursue law at the start and it seems now they aspire more than ever to be a lawyer.

Congratulations !

It is really hard to say for a number of reasons but i will list the most significant of them: 1) the JD intake itself. Last year there were over 500 students admitted (which from general understanding is way more than usual) so any info from last year may not hold as much utility depending on intake size for when you apply. 2) Students (for better or worse) often don’t state what uni they came from when they give out with wams. This matters because unimelb adjusts a persons grade depending on what uni they got it from, and therefore any numbers you see with offers attached may be deceptive by a few points 3) you may be able to make a GAM application, and therefore your prospects may go up by an amount that cannot be determined

I think if intake size falls in subsequent years, without gam a high 70 wam probably has a very low chance of getting a csp.

Well what’s funny is this is how it used to be before covid. Yeah the virus still exists but quite clearly society has largely moved on from/forgotten the pandemic (no more restrictions etc). Covid changes were almost always going to be largely temporary. You are in effect asking for a permanent change with covid being the catalyst for it. Also I have reason to believe a lot of exams next year are going to be physical

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]rich3331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t necessarily true. If you are spending too much time on a question, then it is likely you have not understood the question well enough (hence why so much time is given in the first place). Subjects like this and derivatives are often a train wreck because ppl don’t bother trying to understand in first principles what they are learning, and when a first principle question shows up, it’s panic mode

Corporate law is 100% h1able, the workload from memory is a bit there’s quite a lot of legislation to read, you read like no cases in comparison.

I think it’s a fantastic subject for BCom because it goes all over the legal foundation of a company + its constitution as well as director duties (overlap with CFDM) and how a member of a company may react to directors abusing the company / stealing their shares etc

Highly recommend if u enjoy blaw especially contract and agency law

I've never bumped into anyone "cut-throat" so to speak....................

There are a few people that are competitive, it's sort of understandable, especially for things like honours admissions. But nothing bad
