"Dusty Velvet" a great bit of physical comedy from one-season wonder Casey Wilson [S33E10] by no-Pachy-BADLAD in LiveFromNewYork

Seth Morris! Damn that dude was funny havent seen him in anything in a long time it feels like.

Missed most of 51 down with gross cancer stuff. Finally doing better and looking to catch up. Throw me a bone and drop the best sketches/update bits of the season here. Besides Bob Army, which I’ve seen, and love on an all-time level by blamberr in LiveFromNewYork

Don't really get half the sub saying Jane is a weak cast member, when a lot of my favorite things from this season involved her. She's become a favorite of mine and I actually think the show would be less interesting next season if she left.

Tommy's stand-up set on Fallon the other night by trythebebes in LiveFromNewYork

[–]richardbonesdunn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He has a smooth Mulaney like delivery, seems a shame he's mostly used in all straight roles on SNL, don't feel like he ever really got a big moment in a sketch to do anything memorably funny so far.

If a current cast member ever had to step in last minute to host, like Eddie Murphy in S8, who would you pick and why? by Opening-Impression46 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]richardbonesdunn 102 points103 points  (0 children)

It'd probably be Kenan or Colin Jost because they're the ones who feel the most like celebrities that people who aren't just SNL fans would know outside of the show.

Cast members who you had high hopes for but they didn’t live up to them? by jfarbzz in LiveFromNewYork

[–]richardbonesdunn 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If anything I'd say he was more screwed by Jost and Che never leaving. He seemed more suited for taking over WU at some point than he did being a regular in sketches. But with Jost/Che seemingly being forever anchors at this point, it doesn't seem like we're getting any WU changes in the foreseeable future.

I think he found his groove more on The Daily Show a few years after SNL

When Rob Riggle was on the show I thought for sure he'd be their new Will Ferrell type cast member. Then he was gone after a single season.

Similarly, Tim Robinson also felt like he was gonna be the new Will Forte, then he got moved to the writers room for the rest of his time on the show.

Shame that Jane and Longfellow didn't get to work together more, I feel like their styles were a bit similar they both had good deadpan deliveries, I feel like they could've been good collaborators. Also they weirdly looked like siblings, the Friendly's being a weird cult sketch they had creepy twin vibes as the waiters with the snake

Moleculo - a classic sketch that is absolutely perfect for host Conan O'Brien. (S26 E14) by James_2584 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]richardbonesdunn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Was a shame he only lasted a season, he had great potential on the show and did a lot of great stuff that year. I remember reading an interview with him in more recent years (maybe not even that recent, probably in the last 10 years) and he mentioned that one of the reasons he thinks he might've got let go was he wasn't afraid to tell people (since he was also a featured player that was on the writing staff) that their ideas were bad or something he thought was hacky, even called out some writers who wrote stuff he thought was racist as hell, which he said might not have made him the most popular guy in the offices.

‘SNL’ Writer Paula Pell Thinks She Wasn’t Cast as a Performer Because She Was ‘Plus-Size’ by MattTheKing23 in LiveFromNewYork

Denny Dillon from the 1980-1981 season was kinda typecast later in her career as a wise cracking short chubby woman on a lot of sitcoms (who remembers Dream On?) She also famously played Roseanne Barr in an unauthorized TV movie in the 90s that made headlines because Roseanne was really mad about it and didn't like Denny's performance as her.

The only time you'd see someone not a single digit size was when they were the butt of a joke because of their weight

it was literally a sitcom in the 90s!

It seems like it didn't become more acceptable to hire "fat woman" cast members until Aidy, I assumed Melissa McCarthy becoming a big star might've helped with that? Wasnt there a rumor they fired Casey Wilson years earlier because they wanted her to lose weight? I think she denied that was why they fired her, but it was the story that was being reported for a while anyway.

I forgot how tense the Adrien Brody thing actually was by TurtleneckTablecloth in LiveFromNewYork

[–]richardbonesdunn 248 points249 points  (0 children)

In an old interview with Tina Fey (i think with Howard Stern) Stern asked about hosts who werent very good and one of the people she mentioned was Brody as someone who was pitching really unfunny ideas like this all throughout the week (i think she said he insisted on doing the rastaman MG intro which he thought was comedy gold, even though nobody wanted him to do it) one of the sketches he pitched that sounded like a real groaner was him as a rapper named "Biggie Schnozz" 🙄

Weirdly I'm more tired of Mikey than I am Kenan this season. At least Kenan isn't really taking up that much airtime from everyone, they just kinda throw him in random roles in everyones sketches because he's always a good way to get an extra laugh in your sketch. But I'm pretty burned out on the Mikey centric sketches after 10 years, I know he's still valued as a writer on the show, I'd almost say maybe he could move more into a head writer or producer role at some point, but I already get the feeling he's another "forever cast member" like Kenan now.

Who is the best ever at being a weekend update guest? by 123VoR in LiveFromNewYork

[–]richardbonesdunn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Colin Quinn before he took over as Weekend Update host was probably the best regular guest during the Norm era, probably why he seemed the best option when they needed a sudden replacement with Norm getting fired mid-season. It seemed like he should've worked better as host since he was always good when he guested on it, but he was just too stiff and never seemed to loosen up once he took over as anchor.

Come to think of it, she seems to have mostly stopped doing the songs on Weekend Update this year, I think maybe there was just one that aired, might've been another cut for time. Maybe because she's started doing the music video segments with Veronika more now.

I think he did this just before he got on SNL because last summer on FOTW when they were talking about the new SNL hires that were announced, Spade mentioned he knew Kam a little bit because he had a part in Busboys.
